have you tried ticking all of the iec958 boxes .... both on hw:0 and hw:1
also i'm wondering if installing the nvidia graphic driver might be the answer
as i remember pemasu getting hdmi working after installing the ati driver

I suspect the official Nvidia driver would probably solve the problem....kinda new with HDMI so I'm learning as I go.

still doing very well
I downloaded 5.8.4 (PAE) and am running it on a desktop system from CD with a fresh save file. Overall, working great.
The mention of improved graphic performance in the new kernel gave me the idea to test it out with some SFS files of various programs that I had made to use with Precise 5.7.1. Most of them work in Tahr 5.8.4:
Audacious (audio player) = works great
Audacity v2.0.0 (audio editor) = won't run
Aqualung (audio player, version from Oct 2012) = won't run
Google Chrome v37 = works
Opera 12.16 = works
a few games:
Wesnoth v1.8 (SFS I made for Lucid) = works
Konquest (SFS I made for Lucid) = works
Bit.Trip.Runner (commercial, purchased through Humble Bundle) = won't run
Gratuitous Space Battles (commercial) = works
Little Inferno (commercial) = won't run
Superhex (commercial) = works
Out Of The Park Baseball 14 = works
With Precise, the games Bit.Trip.Runner and Little Inferno will load on nearly any system, but the graphics scroll so slowly on many machines as to make them unplayable. That's what gave me the idea to test them in Tahr 5.8.4.
Having those games not load may be a graphics driver issue. I'll have to try them on other systems with other hardware.
I was a bit surprised that Aqualung and Audacity didn't run though. I'll have to test those on other systems and perhaps with other kernels.

Palemoon however fails to display properly some pages, notably https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/woof-CE (see sceeny)
Anybody else sees that?

By Jove I think we've done it ...
666philb, I have one of those crazy Pentium M's that need a bit of help (or code) to make it work under Precise 5.7.1 & Slacko 5.7 or higher..
The new 5.8.4 non PAE works OOTB, all issues w/ muted sound, no wifi detected /disconnects, shutdown hang / savefile (dir) creation/corruption
are gone !!! I am so happy not to have to edit anything to avoid/solve issues thus far.. thank you so much for helping and making this purty little pup.
Quick question as I have not kept up with new developments for lack of being able to find anything newer than the updated Lucid 5.2.8.4 to play nice, I am not up on the modular kernel changing these days and would like to try the forced PAE on here (EDIT: on the PAE version) . I don't know if you applied shinobar's patch to the new build and I don't know if some of my issues with that iso were due to not understanding his instructions as to if to boot with pfix=ram and/or forcepae, Either way I had one or more of the issues mentioned above, now all solved with this (EDIT: NonPAE )build..

i've uploaded a new 3.14.11 kernel which hopefully has the force PAE patch applied, and the cirrus qemu module inbuilt https://www.dropbox.com/s/3x121v1gt8ib9 ... .11.tar.gz

Otherwise, Puppy runs from the HDD.
I want to see if it makes a difference using PAE or not considering all the
back and forth..but this is very low priority since all seems good as it is.
And again thank you It is nice to be running a newer pup on this box.
I *love* the save folder.. you puppy capable programmers are fabulous!
Thanks for incorporating it, and to all who help puppy and folks like me!
Am I happy? Oh yeah

Hi 666philb
Testing 5.8.4 - initially pae version on my desktop with nvidia graphics.
All well so far - have been able to compile the Broadcom wl driver for the new kernel with no problems.
I do notice however that openssl version is reporting an old OpenSSL 1.0.1f 6 Jan 2014
whereas the up to date version is 1.0.1i................
Cheers & congrats & thanks

yes i've noticed that and only on github ... it's to do with the browsers internal certificates and i think it fixes itself eventually.
you can make github display correctly straight away by ...
preferences>>>advanced>>>certificates>>>validation and untick the 'OSCP' box
then visit github and it will display correctly... after you can turn OSCP back on.

did the keyboard fail after restart on 5.8.3 or only after you tried those sound drivers i posted?
i had a similar thing with flash not working, and it was because i had set the soundcard using the tray and not using multiple soundcard wizard first. run the wizard and make note of the card number and then check that it matches in retrovol settings/config
after sound is set properly .... in vlc prefernces >>audio choose

BTW, if this is to be released as the next official woof-CE-derived puppy, would be a good idea to get a decent version number (5.9 or 6.0 instead of the current point release) and also a decent announcement, so Barry can put it in his blog (eventually).
