Firefox vs. Flash 9 Progress

I found the Flash 9 test page today http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about. Scrolling down the page I see an update for Linux to 9,0,48,0. I haven't tried it yet; am currently running 9,0,31,0.

Comparing versions among OS's it appears Linux's may be the newest. If the update works well maybe I'll have to revise my opinion of Adobe's Linux Support a bit But they still don't support Shockwave.

Was starting from a completely clean Puppy 2.17. Flash kept breaking Firefox, and I was repeatedly wiping the Puppy file off my hard drive to start afresh until I noticed that there were no more crashes when Flash was the last thing installed.

I am running Firefox 2.0.0.6 with Flash 9.0.31.0. I used the Firefox 2.0.0.3 dotPUP and the Flash9 dotPUP.

After installing, Firefox quickly auto-updated to 2.0.0.5 and began breaking left and right, until I uninstalled the Flash9 dotPUP with the Puppy package manager, and immediately reinstalled it. No more crashes.

Just today Firefox auto-updated to 2.0.0.6, and the same trouble began immediately, which I solved with the same solution.

I don't do anything with the plugins (like changing/adding symlinks, or copying them all back and forth and such). I don't fuss with the Firefox startup script, and I don't change/create environmental variables, as has been described in the various fixes in this thread. I just uninstall and reinstall Flash over the Firefox updates, and poof! no more segmentation faults.

Don't understand it. Hope that this may be helpful to someone. Anyone else notice similar behavior?

yeah when firefox updated to 2.0.0.6 flash broke on windows xp so not even a linux issue it is a mutual flash and Firefox thing.

I hear that flock version 1.0 has been released, and it includes a lot of changes to the base code that will hopefully mean that flash cannot crash it. Has anyone tried it as yet?

I prefer Opera. In fact I prefer Dillo - well OK not Dillo.

The early Flock was simple and elegant. The 1 release is too complex. If it is tweaked and customised (which you can do) It becomes more handable

A customised Flock in 3.03 has been suggested (above link) A lot of people are convinced that Firefox + add ons is the equivalent of Flock.

The installation seemed straightforward

Any news of the Flash/Stability problems? Flock does take some getting used to no doubt (and a lot of the useful plugins for firefox dont work). I was thinking of it for ecopup if it fixes the horrific stability problems that the users in my area have been experiencing with it.

For 3.03ce I think the spec of the computer needs to be kept roughly within current puppy limits (that means seamonkey or an opera version if someone wants to make one ). Ecopup is for 700mhz/192mb upwards where stock puppy runs acceptably on 200mhz with 128mb RAM (in my experience).

ok , just to get this down while i have the folders open, not even 100% if it fixed anything, but it feels better ... ( have been crppled, unable to use firefox due to frequent random crashing / crash / crashes .

puppy beta rc whatever version deud on bike

firefox 3.0.1 pup
flash 10 beta pup
java 1.6 pup


original plugin files located /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

contains 2 of key mentioned files: flashplayer.xpt , libflashplayer.so , third java one you can find yourself using puppy find tool: libjavaplugin_oji.so

changes made:

made sure there were relative symlinks (option available from rox drag and drop) to these three files in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins and ~/.mozilla/plugins

well it was better but still crashing(not as often) , so downgraded firefok to 2.0.0.16 which seem s to be going well... no crashes yet, knock thrice on wood.

Which pet are you using? The Firefox+flash+java I made up months ago seemed to work well, It was based on The 2 series and updates

i was just using pups i found individually lying around, its barely crashed on me since, but thanks for the suggestions , ill prob switch over some time.
