Good question.

It's because the slap-dash mindset is so prevalent around here. Do you really expect a more deliberate process when you're dealing with a distribution with an average new release cycle of 6-8 weeks? Just as with the distro, regardless of whether the logo needs more work, just ship it as is. It can be patched later ...

Guys I think we need to outline exactly what type of logo we want. I'd argue we need:

-simple
-memorable
-recognisable
-clean

Thus we need to look at other logos and get inspiration.

I think we need a simple icon/logo that can be varied easily (think Ubuntu, Kubuntu...).
I think we also need to use simple shapes. (think MEPIS, Slax and Zenwalk)
Finally I think we just need a puppy face-on (think FoX Linux)

Hmmm...looks even more like a cat than a dog that way. I'm beginning to think that the rastapax-style logo is ok, BUT I don't like the bland colours. I prefer the brighter colours myself. What about this?

Some great new ideas :)

We are not Gnome, Wolvix Linux or Paw Linux (or any of the other paw based symbols)

We are Puppy Linux

The best way to represent Puppy is with . . . drum roll . . .
a Puppy (more clues on request) :)

There is only one Puppy that carries a yellow flower

and for those big strong macho geeks frightened of flowers . . .

No. It's because people have been complaining about our outdated and disjointed web presence for a LONG time, and now we have the approval to do something about it. Unfortunately, the more serious design stuff can't start until we have a recognisable logo around which it can be built.

If that "recognisable logo" turns out to be the current one, so be it, but I think most here would prefer a more stylish, cleaner and more professional-looking logo for their favourite distro. Even your prefered Puppy paw is a serious contender.

I just didn't want this discussion to go round in circles ad nauseum, and lose the offer of a facelift from someone like eob who needs a framework within which to be creative.

What I also don't want is to end up with something that no-one really likes except the small minority who voted for it. Looking at the current voting figures, less than half of the community who have voted so far have voted for the most popular choice. The more choices the worse that will get. When the choices are narrowed a little, then we can vote again ... but don't forget that it's Barry's distro and Barry's choice in the final wash.

I hope that explains the motivation a little more clearly.

BTW, MGFox's alternatives have some really nice choices too.

Now you're talking! Maybe some clever dude like MGFox or afgs can come up with a new logo-version from that photo of Vincent?

BTW, Barry and I are the same age (born 1950), but he looks way younger than me and he's got more hair! I'm jealous! And they said "grass doesn't grow on a busy street". There goes that excuse! :P

Personally the one so far that I really like is the black outline in the middle of MGFox's drafts.

Thanks WhoDo and MGFox, you give me some ideas like attached.
Some derived from MGFox's drafts, and combined with Vincent's photos.

This one looks great, pretty much professional.

WhoDo please omit the ears which make puppy look like a bat or some other creature.

afgs keep up the abstract depicts of puppy. It may be used as wallpaper and may be start button.

I to like to know if in fact she serves the voting for the application as a new logo.
since I am interested to cooperate with puppy linux somehow from a principle
I feel that he is small a powerful one with a clear idea but… is in graphical aspects falls (in computer science a medal is deserved)
is not to make a system with gnome or KDE or XGLberyl so that it is attractive
if with the philosophy of a small system using little much cannot be made arrive at a-- fresh --clean --appearance simple --and thought towards new a user normal podria to be thought or simple usabality for human :D :D
for pcs of low cost who comes and who

OPCL really estan - (but the atrativa interface…? it is possible to be done with puppy)

this was translated by google excuse the errors

Hi,

I hope its not too late to enter the contest :) Here's a fun graphic I came up with inspired by Barry's original puppy which is my current desktop background http://www.puppylinux.org/user/photogal ... ?photo=262 Just the head is there as well in one of the other galleries. So here's the logo I made:

Image

Yay, it works! First time posting an image :-)

I think the variety of things people have come up with demonstrates their interest in Puppy. Its not too surprising this post would generate a lot of passion as one of the things I've noticed is that Puppy is what you make it. I wasn't put off by any of the graphics on my initial web explorations. If anything it was encouraging and moving to puppy has been refreshing.

Of all the graphics I have seen the most "product" oriented looking one, and friendly, is Rastapax original. It would look great on a box or equally well in a presentation. I have no difficulty with the image looking like anything other than a dog with a large spot round the eye. Its cute and appealing yet has an instantly recognizable simplicity about it. As with many successful designs its all about reducing things down to simple elements.

The image of Barry's dog with the rose in its teeth though is striking, and an idea that i'd be very reluctant to move away from. Sometimes things happen by chance, happy circumstance I'd call it. Such is the case with Barry's very recognizable photo of The Puppy.

I also like the first image in this post cited again below, although she looks a bit bashful or shy, and it would look interesting to have a yellow rose added to it. The nose and circle should be different colours so that they don't blend in when the image is reduced.

Image

The "menu" button I've seen used in different ways. "start' etc. I'm currently using Icewm and a windows xp silver theme. It would be nice to have something specific to puppy no matter whether the rest of the gui appearance is a bit derived and familiar. Derived and familiar makes some of us happy and makes switching initially a bit easier. However a menu button with a yellow rose and stem on it might be nice. I don't think some of the logos are suited to fitting in the bar too well.

Those are my thoughts for the moment.

The reason I like the rastapax sans ears logo is that it is small, simple and friendly. Just like my favorite distro...

Anything photo-based can be neither as small (bitwise) or as simple.

Puppy, all bark and no bytes! :D

It has been a long time since I distro-surfed so I was surprised to stumble
across a Web site that showed the gnome logo as a paw print.

Might be confusing for Puppy to also use a paw print?
