2 questions

#65 Post by nancy reagan »

sc0ttman wrote:To do for 3.0:

- make hot plugging of usb devices refresh the jwm-only desktop
- make jwm drive icons show different icon for usb drives
- enable hotplugging by default, if working on jwm desktop
- make 'refreshjwm' (fixmenus_on_locale) run create_jwmrc_drives.sh, if not ROX desktop
- add madwifi and hal drivers from tempestuous to zdrv
- add fixed and updated xorgwizard - will boot xvesa, no issues
- add a simple quickpet (will have nice puppy hosting by 3.0 release time)

Suggestions?

Then:

Make a version of Puplite with the Lupu kernel...
Or the Wary kernel... Or the Fluppy kernel.

Notes about newer kernel version:

- It will boot straight to Xorg, not Xvesa
- OTF-sfs-loading from goingnuts will not work, but gyro has made something very similar for newer pups
- The default versions of mksquashfs and unsquashfs will be reversed (from v3 to v4)
Hallo Sc0tt,

Asked you to tell me what I did wrong with sfs-conversion from 5 to 4.in earlier post. Only answer :"works nice". Still do not know what I am doing wrong. (Tried on Trio's and even when it tells "all went well e'thing ok, did not work on mounting.)

Being a very low profile user I do not even know what a kernel is  (something like the engineblock in a car ?).

Q1
Reading that you plan to upgrade kernel to lupu. does it mean the sfs conversion from 5 to 4 might work from then on also for me ?

You also talk about MIME.

Q2
What are mimes and what can one do with it ?

Good to hear about the xorg.

Nice work you're doing.

Re sfs convert

your new sfs file will end up in the directory that you specify in the converter program as a completely _DIFFERENT_ file

IIRC the dialog tells you all about it, but there _are_ so many informative yet really lengthy dialogues that they do tend to get ignored in the interest of time management - sometimes it is difficult to be both precise _and_ concise

Double click on any sfs file in Puplite 2.0, and it will tell if the version needs converting.
You can then choose to convert it, if you need to, Trios SFS Convertor will load up for you, ready to go :)
nancy reagan wrote:Q2

Basically, in Puppy, MIME types are used to decide what to do when you double click on a file in ROX, based on filetype.
nancy reagan wrote:Would it be hard to implement the feature "print to pdf"of a webpage ?
I *think* I have already included everything needed for CUPS pdf printing in the printing sfs addon, that is available here:

Yes, I think Puppy 4.2 (2.6.25.16) does not like your hardware...

ndiswrapper

#72 Post by phillypretzel »

hello. i really enjoy this puplet, and i'm attempting to use it to bring an old pII laptop back to life... dougals network wizard allows me to select ndiswrapper, and then point it to the right .inf file, and though it says it's loaded- it fails to recognize the device. any ideas? i've used ndiswrapper successfully on this machine with turbopup, 4.31, and even 5.11... am i doing something wrong?

Hmm, it should work on Puplite, if it works on TurboPup, unless some extra dependencies were removed (entirely possible!)... I think it requires PERL, which should be installed, but I'd have to check it out, never used ndiswrapper though...

You can get PERL from the puppy 4 packages repo on ibiblio
The link is on the Puplite homepage (see first post)

like to try puplite but need xorg

#75 Post by mmmrr »

this system, otherwise admirable, does not work with xvesa, only xorg
i took a look with pfind in the puppy431, [which is running well on this
pentium 2,, 266mhz,,160mb-ram,,toshiba laptop ~1998], to see if i could copy
xorg files to the puplite sfs, then try booting it again.

i realised that using xorg from pup420 would be better but wanted to
see how complex the task might be before looking for the right 420
and downloading it. pfind showed 16 files, about half were in /etc so
i looked at puplite sfs where /etc showed empty.

at which point i began this post. here is the video driver info from
the xorg config file in this puppy431:
Driver "chips" #card0driver
VendorName "Chips and Technologies"
BoardName "F65555 HiQVPro"

i appreciate any help you can give, either to see if xvesa can be got to work
or pointers as to how i might add xorg to yr puplite, which i'm really keen
to try on this fine little system--a couple of weeks ago it fell about 2 feet to
the floor, while running, from where it was standing on end, driving an external monitor---didn't even hiccouph!

all the best, thanks, mm

x fixed: using "vlc -I dummy" in /usr/local/bin/defaultmediaplayer (took me a while!)
x fixed: remove stuff from /root/.packages/alienpackages, as needed

thanks for yr reply, sc0ttman

xvesa doesn't work on any puppy i've ever tried on target machine: all go to black and freeze; xorg always works over a big range of display sizes...

this line

'x update: xorgwizard now auto starts xvesa after it is chosen'

if i knew where to look could i not auto start xvesa and choose xorg...or am i missing something..the usual
xorg/xvesa choice window whizzed by without a pause, so fast i couldn't be sure what i was seeing actually.

cheers, mm

The normal boot of Puplite should go straight to Xorg. If not, Xorgwizard loads.
Xorgwizard only autostarts xvesa if you tell it to do so..

Download it and try it, it will probably boot straight to Xorg for you, no xvesa.
