Puppy Linux 4.3.1

431 is my home since 2009, and never looked back (or forward, lol ). Really stable, does everything I need and, in 4 years I've customized it to death. Although recently some bloated Internet pages don't work well (maybe because of the old browser version mentioned above?), so I also installed Slacko for those cases.

Macpup 5.2.8 v2 - works on just about anything.

My current interest is with Debian 7.2 and choose Wheezy as my primary OS.

I've tried Wary 5.3 and 5.5, Lucid 5.2.8 and Precise 5.6.1 and like Precise the best.

Precise Retro 5.7.1 with OpenboxPlus 1.6.1 is my fav everyday Pup - a solid-as-a-rock workhorse on multiple (older) machines. Love it!!

Lately, though, I've been blown away by Carolina 1.1 - so full-featured and able to be tweaked to a rich desktop environment, I figured it would be "bloaty" and slow... but no! In actuality, it's been surprisingly the fastest, least CPU intensive Pup of a dozen or so that I've spent a fair amount of time on... even with desktop effects in full-swing! Some kinda' magic or something...

IMHO, Carolina should be the Puppy community's "flagship", Windows-refugee, full-Monty Puppy - and am rather dumbfounded as to why folks aren't lining up in overwhelming support of the project. I think it's really that great!!

Puppy 4.3.1 it is all I know. I like the fact I can run it on a computer with no hard drive.

I think one of the Puppy 4.20 - 4.21 range of Puppies such as Deeper Thought (which I'm running at the moment). 4.32 is also very good but AFAIK doesn't have compatibility with dotpups, even with the dotpup handler utility (as 4.21 does).

I am not a good example at all.

The main reason I use Lupu 528-005 is
that is one of the few that I used
often enough to remember how to set
things up so it works. I would use another one
if I knew that one better,. So to me is is pure habit
due to I lack familiarity using other puppies.

Lightweight distros appeal to me at the moment, because my machine's really struggling with the heavier software; the fan's going like the clappers when Firefox is running with three or four tabs open. One of the downsides of having only 512 MB of RAM in 2014, I suppose.

I'm trying PULP 0.03 at the moment (which is based on Puppy 4.12), and it looks good.

I'd just like to amend what I said above - Puppies from 4.21 onwards seem to have trouble with dotpups, even with the dotpuphandler installed, so maybe the best all round Puppies are the ones up to and including 4.20 (which would include Deeper Thought).

You *really* want that fix, if you want to run X-Slacko (1.0 *or* 1.1) !!

BTW, it's very friendly to (current and former) Windows users as well. Took me very little time (fifteen to thirty minutes, max) to switch from Win7 over to X-Slacko -- there's a lot of stuff that acts very similarly, at least as far as UI is concerned.

Oh -- @Colonel Panic -- I installed a single dotpup, the help file for Xara Xtreme (aka XaraLX) and it went absolutely fine. Not sure if other dotpups would have issues, but at least one did not.

Fair dos. It should be possible to use dotpups in more recent Puppies than 4.2; as far as I recall they're only slightly altered zipfiles.

Maybe, but that didn't work for me when I renamed a dotpup (torsmo) and tried to extract from it, so I don't know the answer.

My favorite is 4.1.2 barebones which I am currently building into the OS that I can really use. It's very stable, easy to work with, and runs great on older hardware.

I like all of them for various reasons, but the Puppy I love most is LxPup-Precise-Retro 14.02. It works perfectly with both my laptops. No complaints. No issues. Now, how can you beat that?

I enjoy Macpup. It's absolutely gorgeous and seems stable on my Dell D620.
