I'll double-check if it's my pupsave template that's creating the problem.
Did you have any problems during the un-zip?
What variant of lupu are you using?

Hi musher0,No problems at all unzipping and this is lucid puppy 5.2 and works well when picking #1 lupusave.2fs. I figured I must call in the cavalry

Strange. This is pupsave template abcd working correctly in Small Business Pup, a
beautiful lupu 5.2 derivative by e_mattis. (Only lupu derivative I have. It's at
http://data.deadaccurate.com/SBPiso.tar.gz, if anyone is interested.)

The zipped abcd pupsave template is sane. (I used the one from this thread.)
Since it's mentioned in the PUPSTATE, it's been loaded correctly.

Maybe an explanation of the kernel panic here:

concerning the startup of the init file itself.

Various questions come to mind:
Do you get the same problem with the wxyz pupsave template?
Maybe fsck your partition it's on? (not just the pupsave. You'll need to do this with
a Puppy launched from CD or from another partition.)
How full is your partition?

I'm sorry that I can't help you more, I don't know much about the processes at startup.

Fine business musher0,and thanks for the link.Since I am the unofficial "Royal coaster maker" I am not adverse to downloading another distribution.There is nothing to say that the version I am using presently is not knackered.I will be required to go incognito for a while because I am on prehistoric dialup and when I clicked on the link to download,it told me "Sorry Pal,but you don't have enough time left on this planet to download" I have been looking for a Huawei E303 so I can go modem but I haven't searched a good source yet.I would be interested to know if any of the "Hands"
on this thread have had any success and what distro they are using.Much obliged for your efforts and I will return.cheers

Went over to my local smokin connect hotspot and using BKs simple network connect ,logged on twice after being dumped part way through both Downloads ? I rebooted and using the Full network setup using DHCP > save >done the Download took about twenty minutes and never dumped me.
Whether this info is of any value to others,just thought I'd pass it on.I reckon now I will get a new (clean) stick before trying to setup.BFN

Here's 4.32 Gb worth of pupsave files, as nine *.2fs files, in multiples of 96Mb, from
96 Mb to 864 Mb. The lzo + xz compressions gave the best results: 22k ...

This is for linux citizens rather than for windows refugees, I mean that you need
a little terminal experience to unpack the stuff.

1) Download the attached to a proper Linux partition.
2) Open a terminal there, then type:

3) unzip CE-p*.zip
4) cd CE-p*/
5) ls | sort
## You'll see the nine archives with a number, in alpha-numerical order.
## That number indicates the unpacked size.
## Choose the file size most likely to suit your need.
## Jot down its filename if you need to.

6) xz -d CEsave-a*.lzo.xz
# for example
7) lzop -d CEsave-a*.lzo
# The pupsave should now be fully unpacked.

Move it to the same partition or folder that your Puppy sfs file is in.
# (Optional, but recommended.)

9) If you're not using the CE-3 Puppy derivative, rename the "CE" part to whatever
the name of your Puppy is. For ex., slackosave, precisesave, dpupsave, and the like.

10) Reboot, and the Puppy will pick up your new pupsave file.

I had a somewhat similar experience].
SNS did something wrong but using the older way
it worked that was some weeks ago

Does latest Slax and Porteus do it almost like we want???
Them rather small size too.

Slax having a big 1G but Porteus let you decide size

@nooby ,well I don['t know if anyone would encounter a problem with a small
DL using BKs system but on a large download ,chances may be you might get
dumped.Too bad BK has left the building and now living in Shangri La as we could ask him.

OK,Now lets brainstorm here a bit: Whatever distro you install and make your
"first pupsave.2fs" then using # mksquashfs first pupsave.2fs first pupsave.sfs
Then using the mohan34u script "createsfs" combine the boot.sfs + first pupsave.sfs and call it "yoursave_528.sfs.or whatever is applicable then what would happen if you ask your box to boot this combined .sfs ? I don't know but as I have time I will try to figure it out..cheers

Careful, here! Let's not confuse things! Mohan's thread deals with sfs and pet files, not
pupsave files. He deals with a way to make a big sfs file from smaller pets and sfs's.
That's quite different from installing a regular pupsave file, which is the subject here.

# mksquashfs mypupsave.2fs mypupsave.sfs then am I not in the ballpark of using mohans script to combine two .sfs files ? I must be missing something here? and I won't know,until I try it.If I use a clean memory stick,the worse that could happen is that it won't work,you think ? Also when you get to my age you are past the point of being careful cheers

On a parallel subject, you'll find an interesting edit of the default pupsave configuration
script used at shutdown; by L18L, for Puppy Precise 5.7.1, here:

If the settings for the creation of the pupsave file are not to your liking, L18L's introduction
of a "back" button offers the user the possibility to back-track and change them..

I am not sure yet what or how to deal with this result and whether it is even applicable to "How do we deploy an empty pupsave at 1st boot in frugal? " ,
I will have to stand down for now as I have real life domestic chores.
