Here's an experimental desktop for 010: Openbox as the window manager (no desktop menu), fbpanel as the panel and Obconf to configure Openbox.
Very lightweight, fbpanel is lighter than lxpanel and Openbox doesn't have all the session-management-related stuff, so it's extra lightweight. See the package size
The menus are messed up, I'll ask playdayz how he got around this problem.
Needs testing

openbox fbpanel
ob/fbpanel works fine so far.
obconf needed these on a clean install
libxcb-aux.so.0
libxcb-event.so.1
libxcb-atom.so.1
installed your volumeicon from here:
http://brainwavedesigncentral.net/dima/ ... -0.2.1.pet
looks good in the translucent/transparent fbpanel
selecting "reboot" from menu may cause a hard reset, i edited:
in .config/fbpanel/default:
item {
name = Reboot
image = /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps/shutdown24.png
action = wmreboot
}

Nice!
In the LXDE-light thread I wrote:

Thanks!

This is what I get with your openbox-fbpanel combo:You are right disciple.
This is the difference I get, Dpup running with no apps open, except system info:
JWM : 73 MB
LXDE-light: 96 MB
( was 89 MB without the screenshot utility running)
Thanks!

Uploaded a Trinity base SFS, here. The SFS contains kdelibs-trinity, kdebase-trinity and xdg menu stuff Puppy lacks.
There's also a SFS with libs and a third SFS with /etc/profile.local, some stuff that must run before X starts to make sure the shell finds Trinity plus some variables Trinity needs.
If you want to try it, use a clean save because it might ruin your installation. So far there's one issue, the media manager won't start and I don't know why. I want to use hal and dbus from Debian in 010 to see if they're the reason for this problem.
Oh, and another issue - for some reason if you use just the base Trinity (kdebase-trinity) there are sounds for pretty much all events of kwin. However, if you use the full desktop (forgot the package name, I built a SFS from it too), it also comes with some default settings and those annoying sounds are gone.
Bert: so you say we should stick with JWM?

No, no, just reporting my findings.Iguleder wrote:Bert: so you say we should stick with JWM?
The added RAM usage is not that big, at least on a more or less recent machine it will hardly weigh.
It seems you and Playdayz found good reasons to switch from JWM to something else, as an experiment at least.
Again, I was just reporting. Luckily I lack all qualifications to judge and propose decisions

Just take a look at the screenies from the famous thread we have, it's quite obvious what makes a desky ugly (*ahem, JWM*).
I just thought, maybe we should try something new. Something that no other Puppy ever had.
Don't forget we have the fullscreen problems and all the traditional difficulties that come with JWM, that's another reason to look for alternatives to JWM.

I pulled an old P4 off the shelf, removed a gb of ram and turned it into another test box.Fresh frugal install of 009.
Initial boot had working sound and internet connection and easily got the correct screen resolution.

Indeed, Woof is here
Time to make a good beta-quality 010 ISO
EDIT: 010 has so many changes ... the list is partial:
- Uget
- Smaller Osmo with horizonal layout
- Smaller xpad
- Hacked DeaDBeeF with audio CD playing capability
- GNOME file icons
- HomeBank
- fpm2
- Viewnior
- New CPU frequency scaling tool
- LXRandR
- bluez-gnome and bluez
- rgbPaint
- Luvcview
- Font size and Seamonkey fixes for xchat
- mhwaveedit
- New Woof with the alsa fix
- Smaller and better 2.6.32.24
Should we use Barry's 2.6.34.6 from Wary? Also, pekwm is interesting.

Barrys 2.6.34.6 kernel has special patch, and so far there is no experience and enough data how it works. Latest Wary 0.92 has problems already. Openoffice and libreOffice does not work with it. Well... maybe jemimah`s version works. I wouldnt change kernel too quickly.
I suppose you havent uploaded delta_iso yet. Hungrily waiting....

At the moment Woof is running, it's in the package download stage. I already integrated all the goodies we made so far and recompiled 2.6.32.24 with some stuff I missed.
I'm also compiling 2.6.35.7, my netbook needs it.

One kernel is 2.6.32.24, the other can be either 2.6.35.7 or Barry's 2.6.34.6 from Wary. I say we should use the latter for two reasons:
- Barry's additions, like the modem drivers
- Ready nvidia drivers
- Barry know better and if he picked 2.6.34.6, there's a good reason for this
- 2.6.36 is out and still no aufs for it, so we can't use it
EDIT: I guess we'll use 2.6.34.6, I'll compile a 2.6.35.7 kernel with some extra tuning for laptops.
EDIT 2: big success! I built an ISO with my 2.6.35.7, the alsa levels fix works! Everything looks great (using Xfce-basic and the Ubuntu font, 12 pixels). However, mplayer is broken becuse of one library I missed and I'm getting some weird black pixels in a pattern on my Eee.
This laptop-specific kernel uses "ondemand" for CPU frequency scaling so it takes more time to boot, but it saves power and I can tell that the fan is very very very quiet, at least on my Eee. This kernel has wireless and audio power saving enabled by default.

one problem with wary as is to lupu|dpup nvidia drivers is that the path to the xorg drivers is different from 7.3 to 7.5 . That could be worked around by some restructuring but better I think to recompile. Especially since to have true compatibility the kernel needs to be recompiled (as you are doing) against the current gcc, You know what I mean
