good work!

running well on my netbook but i needed to swap kernels for it to run on my desktop, my nvidia card really doesn't like the 4 series kernels, hopefully this will be resolved as the 4 series progresses.

installed a few applications from the PPM ...wesnoth, audacious, gimp, gnuchess all working fine.

one thing i noticed ... with the new firewall_ng , if you have a wireless connection and set up the firewall before setting up your wireless connection, the firewall stops the browser connecting to the internet, it's rectified by re-running the firewall setup.

I also needed to swap kernels to run in VMWare fusion.

In general I have the sense that 4.x kernels have more issues that the LTS 3.x. Or maybe is just a configuration issue. How do they compare with the 3.x

A far chance might be the firmware compatibility with the new kernels. Is the firmware tarball updated after the 4.x kernels?

IDK if 666philb's are the same. I have put them in slacko's SFS Manager. Menu(Applications) > Setup > SFS Manager download and install sfs files.

As for running old opera, you have to start it differently. If it is tarted with a script (/usr/bin/opera?) you have to start it like this:

Code: Select all

start32 opera "$@"

Understood (I hope). Thanks a lot, 01micko and sszindian .
Will try it soon and let you know.

Wired connection with SiS190:
Retried all three options many times. SNS and Frisbee never work (the latter has never worked on any of my kit, GB is mostly on PPPoA).
After a while, managed to get Douglas' setup to stick, but the procedure is definitely flaky. Vaguely seems a bit deja vu, but memory cells can't recall previous discussions.
No issues with SiS190 on Werewolf64.

I have made improvements to SNS. I used to have lots of trouble getting a connection.

We need to do a diff on /usr/local/simple_network_setup, latest Quirky 7.3.3, with latest Slacko/woof-CE.

hello barry,

i know you"re pretty much hands-off, (retired), but was wondering if you have any idea why
full install is broken in modern pups? I understand that frugal is the main aim of pup, but, for some ram challenged pc people, full install is the best option,

this issue has been raised in several threads...with no resolution forthcoming.

tks for any ideas

muggins.

Have you tried a full install from slacko?

I have tried several on Vms and bare metal with no issues. If you run a 3 series kernel a full install can be done to an f2fs flash stick. There is something broken with full installs to an f2fs flash drive with 4 series kernels but that doesn't affect normal full installs.

If your hardware is old (as in old P3 or even P2) go for slacko 5.3.3. But if it is a decent P3 ( > coppermine && > 1000MHz) or better there should be no reason the current slacko 6.3.0 series shouldn't work. A full install should be right with as little as 128MB RAM. Booting off CD will be slow as you know but patience should get you there.

OK, will have a squizz later, but....as i know you're a keen contributor to woof etc, do you have any idea why/when full install became broke in pup? something to do with the install wizard.

e.g. see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... start=1710
Hi new to the forum and a relative novice in experience but not in years unfortunately.

Have used Carolina previously, version 1? but at that time was able to do a full install on my netbook asus 1005ha.

Coming back to 1.3 after a bit of trying other distro's I'm getting the same issue as johnywhy raised and Geoffrey confirmed, the option to chose full or frugal install is "missing" with frugal being the only option.

Is there a fix or a easy not to involved workaround available??

thanks

Edited to add - just tried 1.1 and 1.2 and full install option is present on both.
Have used unetbootin in all cases to create bootable usb.

Does this suggest a bug or is it a deliberate omission?
There are other threads mentioning broken full install. I've tried taking working pupinstaller, which used to work with full install, (from older pups), but doesn't work with newer versions. Something is broken...any ideas welcome.

Hi Muggins

Late last year we totally rewrote the universal installer. Full installs were tested by several people including James C and Billtoo (iirc).

As far as I know, Carolina is based on wary/racy, which well and truly pre-dates woof-CE. Of course old slacko 533 is of the same or similar vintage so may well have bugs with full install.

I even have a regular slacker (Ryan McQuen) as an advocate for full installs. I walked him through an install using lilo as the boot loader! Worked like a charm. This was slacko 5.7 (before the full revamp of universal installer). See here.

A long time ago, I do remember (vaguely) fixing something to do with full installs (possibly around the time of slacko 5.3x).
Sorry I'm not motivated to find the evidence right now, I've had a few long days! Perhaps we should continue this discussion in another thread (we are way off topic) or feel free to email me.

Cheers

Thanks for the information!!

I was wondering if any of the stuff you are doing with Quirky is getting into Woof-CE?
The changes you are doing to some of the base Puppy programs?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Hello, 01micko & fellow Puppians!

Downloaded latest .iso (after Tue Nov 17 00:04:24 UTC 2015) of Slacko64-6.3.0 and booted with Lilo. (01micko's How to Lilo thread)
Everything is running strong on my desktop PC.
All seems to work OOTB, even Skype version from official repo.
Congratulations!!!
