I edited the syslinux.cfg of my Macmini install adding
"intel_pstate=disable", the cpu has a limit of 2501 MHz now and runs cooler.

@billtoo thanks for the intel_pstate=disable.
Seems that intel_pstate is causing boot issues as well https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=110941
That maybe why the lenovo boot takes so long with newer fatdogs <minutes>

xlock works
for # xlock-gui I get
xlock: bad command line option "locked"

- gpg (+ gpg2 in devx)
- dislocker-fuse, for read/write access to Bitlocker-encrypted paritions

Greetings!
The use of spot and the above seems to indicate potentially more security than Puppy.
Aye caramba ... darkweb here I come - not!
Good to know. Will look into that listing . . .
See if this "locked" option is in ~/.xlock-gui and delete it from there, if so.Lobster wrote:for # xlock-gui I get

Alternatively, just re-configure xlock via "Configure Xlock screen locking" in Control Panel.
This should fix it.

Well, it's a bit more complicated, because Fatdog creates a savefile as a sparse file, so it only takes as much space on disk as all the files in it.mavrothal wrote:I actually ment "does not check for a sensible available space". ie does not mane sense to suggest a savefile/folder in devices with less than 100MB free space.
Therefore it's possible to create, say 4GiB savefile on a partiton that has only 1GiB of free space at the moment and free up the space later, as the savefile is growing over time.
Yes, such an approach may lead to problems if you're not aware of how it works, but thanks to this creating even large savefiles takes a few seconds.
Generally, I'd say Fatdog puts more emphasis on efficiency and simplicity over ease of use.

Ah, now I see why it suggests a savefile on an 1.4MB floppy diskSFR wrote:I'd say Fatdog puts more emphasis on efficiency
Seriously though, I see your point.
All I say is that little presumed "oversights" may suggest a "rough" OS to a first time user, and this does not do justice to the work done here.
There are hundreds of linuxes to "download for a spin" and if the first ride is not fully satisfying you just "spin" the next one...
Then again, I've been wrong before

Sigh! Adobe has replaced the 11 series of Flash Player with 24.0.0.186, in the process they have broken the update script.

I am fairly new to FD and by going through all the posts in this topic I get the impression FD does not recognize different savefiles, or let me put it this way, if I have more than one savefile with different names in the same location FD does not give me a choice which one to load.
I asume to be able to use different savefiles, you have to create seperate entries in your bootloader? Or is there a different way to achieve this?
Also, can I actually permanently move the save to ram icon to a different location and have it come up there at reboot? I can move it, but it pops right back to the original location at reboot. Yes, I saved ram before shutting down. Renaming the icon is not permanent either.
Thanks in advance

I don't know what your situation is, but I can tell you that I am running several versions of Fatdog. These are in separate directories which hold both the vmlinuz and initrd files, as well as the fdsave.ext4 files. You can give save files or save folders different names, but I'd rather not get into the way these are examined and parsed in detail.
Here's a relevant section of my menu.lst file for Grub version 1. If you are running Grub2 or Grub4dos the syntax will be different. If you only want different savefiles or save folders there is no need to put copies of vmlinuz and initrd in each, you can simply link to common files used by all, which could be in a different directory. I've done things this way because it makes it easy to experiment with different builds.

Fatdog is a completely new build using "Linux From Scratch" methods. You can create multiple save files with different names, but I'm still not sure how it will handle them in every case. It will ignore name extensions. This bothered me when the extension said ext4 but the underlying file system was ext3. I converted one installation from a savefile to save folder where this would have been a problem. It turns out Fatdog doesn't depend on file types named in those extensions. I even deleted the extension entirely, and it still handled the folder.
Using separate folders was not a big deal for me because I expected to experiment with different kernels. I'm just telling you something I am sure works. You can experiment with various naming schemes to see how close you can come to the approach you used in Puppy, but don't assume this is a Pupplet.

For months at a time my network access is usually over the cellular system. So, except for the first download I install everything from a saved txz file and I rarely install with gslapt. However, I have occasionally had the Ace of Penguins subsequently fail to appear in the menu but a "RestartX" fixes it right up.Billtoo wrote: I installed Ace of Penguins solitaire game with gslapt but no menu

The current discussion of the savefile for FD710 brings me to ask this question:
I always boot to RAM from a clean iso file. I never make a savefile. I gave it a try but it is just not compatible with my FD practices.
However, if I could generate a sfs file that loads a desired configuration after a cold boot, that would be worth a try. So, is there a way to create a sfs that saves a freshly configured cold boot for a future use?
Best regards to all!

Hi DrDeaf,
I did not try this, but should work.
Boot fresh as you do.
Make changes in configs.
Create savefile (I belive savefiles are nothing but sfs files.) or create savefolder.
And boot next time fresh too, and make sfs of that save folder.
Load that SFS with extrasfs boot parameters or after boot with sfs_load script like regular sfs.
Why I think this would work?
Because I seem to remember that sfs in fatdog are loaded on top layer of base system, unlike other pups where sfs are loaded below base system.
So changing, upgrading system with sfs is possible in Fatdog.
This I have read somewhere on forum or in FAQs but don't remember where.

Fixmenus or restarting x doesn't put an icon on the menu, I put a gexec icon on the desktop and start ace of penguins and other apps with that.
Lxterminal and TAS created a menu icon and work fine when installed with gslapt.
Thanks

@Billtoo:
Gexec has no menu entry, but it can be launched via Alt+F2 shortcut.
Ace of Penguins package does not contain a desktop file at all, because it's not provided with the source code.
Anyway, I made one + simple Xdialog launcher.
I also fixed crash after pressing F1 (to show Help).
Package attached (remove fake '.gz' extension).
Greetings!
