A few more download options for ecopup 0.7.1.iso

Caneri's mirror
http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/cus ... p0.7.1.iso

CoBlitzed link - just use your regular web download method. CoBlitz caches a file among many big universities, and can get the file from all of them, relieving burden on original server & making the file still available if original server goes down.

Metalink - use a metalink-enabled downloader like Aria2 (puppy) or Orbit (Windows). metalinking gets file from multiple sources simultaneously, no single point-of-failure.

I was reading that Ecopup includes openoffice in a zip file? wouldn't it be better to use p7zip or directly with lzma (akin to gzip or bzip2) to compress with lzma so you save some space?

compresses as fast as gzip with compression as good as or better than bz2

Hella, excuse the delay getting back to you

Many thanks klu9 for the mirrors, I will update the ones from our main website shortly.

I have actually some some work in porting Ecopup (0.7.1) to the 3 series base. You must load the icewm package separetely (its .pup) as icewm is already included in the 2.15ce base that ecopup uses. If I remember correctly, the icons from 3.00 appear *in addition* to the ones already on the desktop, but you can just right click and remove them. There were a few other tweaks to do as well. Because I know that ecopup will port to a 3 series base, I was going to wait until I have more time after the next 3.03ce series is complete, and base an ecopup on that. I would e very grateful if you want to perform the upgrade Oui ad if you could post me back a zipped up eco_save.2fs file then it would save a lot of time to just upgrade from 3.00 to 3.03ce when it is complete. Ecopup inherits puppy No. 1 problem with a frugal install, which is the icons disappear (or worse) when the eco_save.2fs file fills up. This WILL be fixed in the next community edition.

With the next version (which will include the installer), we are opting for bz2 compression for the eco_save.2fs file and having the openoffice.sfs file separately on the CD. Initial reports form the person developing this say that it will save around 50m of space for more things on the cd. I ant to use this space for a few more applications, probably Thunderbird, and also opera as a small light web browser. Another big problem with puppy/linux in general is that flash 9 is highly unstable and causes browser crashes. I want opera and seamonkey to use flash 7 by default with flash 9 on firefox. This means that if a site will not work with one browser, they can just open it using the other. Firefox also has a nasty habit of losing the bookmarks, so the other browsers will at least be a "live backup" of those.

The idea is here that (like the office suites) there will be two programs available with the default install, a heavy version for faster computers or a light version. Even with a faster computer the user can choose the fast version of the application for a bit of extra speed if the extra facilities arnt being used. This means there can be a standard setup for all computers that are being recycled and it will work (either fast or slow) with either the heavy or the light apps. It wil also give new puppy users more experience if they want to do their own setup using standard puppy, as they can get a feel for all of the applications, and just install the ones they want.
