Hi;
very nice puplet.
Downloaded the beta base iso, burned to cd, booted up just fine on my P4 2.8 GHz. No problem with my 11 partitions.
Tried to install on partition 6, a 10Gb Linux partition. First thing it did was ask me to save everything, which is usually the last thing you do.
Rest of installation went fine.
Rebooted, selected Lighthouse on my menu, got an error about not installing fs on unknown (0,0), then system locked up.
Solution?

TazOC is probably busy with his next release.
Did you try a frugal install?
If you search the forum you'll find that others report that installations to an entire partition sometimes produce odd results.
A frugal installation provides no less of a system than a "full" install and has many advantages.

Hi All,
Am downloading 443b, But want to say how impressive lighthouse was in in an earlier version where I found I could watch Nasa TV on my old junk PC. You have a wonderful distro, in my humble opinion.
However, it is easy with all the work necessary to accomplish this distro, to maybe miss what some others are also doing, and to that end I would like to mention what "Seeker" has produced, Because I believe "Lighthouse" is ready for Prime Time.

(this url post maybe got a little off track, but Seeker rerouted it with this post)

Since this topic has diverged into a seperate subject I opened a new one for the builder.

The tutorial for packaging your own Puppy as a Windows installable executable is online at

I can verify that the packaged EXE will install Puppy - and for my system booted OK (because there is a second disk, slight problem to be worked out.) and there was no problem with XP.
It would be wonderful if Lighthouse had a version of this EXE

efiguy,
Thank you for the glowing comments and feedback, Jay. I checked out the links and will give the Puppy-Win32-Installer a try when I have a some free time--it looks intriguing. If only I didn't have to actually use Windoze to test it out

New wallpaper by Jason
Thank you Jason. I put your screenshot up on the gallery and the new wallpaper is in 443c's Voyager SFS. It's grown on me so I will have to 'promote it' to the base ISO in the next release.jasmac wrote:Hi everyone, just thought I would check in and let you know that everything is still working sweet. Icewm has turned into my wm of choice, just so damn snappy. Anywho I have a new background that I thought I would share. There is the screeny to check out first and if you take a shine to it the background itself. Hope you like it.
I just found an update to IceWM 1.3.5 and will test it out when I have a chance.
Thanks again and happy holidays,

tazoc,
You've outdone yourself again with your new release. As usual, I'm particular interested in KDE4 and so far it's worked great. I am especially pleased that my sound is working fine with Amarok, so I'm enjoying some great Christmas music right now. Also, pleased with the update of Bibletime which also works great.
Thanks again for sharing the results of your hard work.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
Jim

Hey TazOC,
Thanks. I have the latest release up and running, going sweet as usual. Also have it on my usb and intend to take to work and around to show off. I am amazed at how you can put so much into it, it just leaves me in awe. Would it be ok to install those Icewm pets? I will have a go anyways. Once again thanks for all you effort, you are a champ. Happy holidays to you and yours.
Cheers

Jim and Jason,
I appreciate that very much. Glad to hear that the audio in Amarok is working Jim. Today I noticed that the Kscreensavers aren't set up right--same thing happened last time I updated KDE. I made a note to fix them. Don't know if a patch would work but certainly they'll work better next time around. Jason you might want to back up your spupsave.2fs first, as I haven't tried the Icewm pets yet.

Testing LHP+KDE+Mariner
Iwlagn wireless module loads now automatically. No need to copy firmware. CUPS and Foo2xxx_r220909-0.0-i486.pet works with HP laserjet 1020 printer.
Using now KDE 4 environment, first time after about 5 years. Looks good. Some personal tuning and it will be nice to use.
Thank you very much of this puplet. Happy Christmas and succesful next year also.

443c feedback
In my set up I keep a lot of data outside of the root folder.
I tried to edit my menu.lst file (it's on /mnt/sda1 an ntfs partition) it comes up as a read only file and I cannot change the permissions.
I'm not quite understanding the new user scheme.

A frugal installation probably would be better due to the extensive collection of sfs files that go with it.
Their have been a few reports on previous builds that indicated problems with a full installation, including mine. Although, I haven't tried this one as a full installation. If you do try it, let us know the results. Remember that any sfs files you want to use cannot be selected with the boot manager. For it to work properly, each sfs file has to be installed in the appropriate directories. trio's sfs_installer may work with Lighthouse although it was prepared for 430 http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=44765

I imagine full is slightly faster but you probably wouldn't notice it. As Jim said the frugal has a number of advantages that, for me at least, far outweigh any speed increase. I don't recommend a full install unless you are compiling a kernel or running on very outdated hardware and need every ounce of speed above all other considerations. This is what the installer will say:bolle wrote:does full or frugal boot faster?
-TazOC1. FRUGAL (recommended)
Copies the files vmlinuz, initrd.gz, and spup-443.sfs to the partition, saving your personal settings inside a spupsave.2fs file (like when running from CD) and leaving the previous contents of the partition untouched. PROS:
- Can coexist with another distro installed to the same partition.
- Can install to a non-Linux FAT or NTFS partition (former preferred).
- Easier to upgrade: just download the new .iso file and replace the above files with their newer versions (mount the .iso to access the files).
(Note: An .iso can easily be mounted in Lighthouse just by clicking on it)
- Enables the use of .sfs addons (application combo-packs).
- Can save to entire partition if Linux f.s. and no need to coexist.
2. FULL
A "normal" Linux installation, requiring usage of the entire partition by Lighthouse.

I also save most of my work and music outside of the '/' file system, some to /mnt/home and the rest to another ext3 partition. If menu.lst is read only most likely the partition was mounted read-only. Try creating a new empty text file and see for sure. I think Jim was suggesting to unmount and re-mount the partition with pmount. If necessary, run a check disk in Windows. I checked my ntfs partitions and they mounted read-write.

Almost in full agreement with tazoc, above.
However, yes, a FULL installation will, generally, boot up much faster, even on ancient kit.
Furthermore, remember that there's an HD lurking inside most junk heaps you find, are given, etc. Anything >~3Gb is ideal for installing a compact distro. I keep banks of around 100 old discs in perfect working order for testing as well as using distros. Buy a batch of a dozen caddies (three quid from Ebuyer) and swap them around as you wish. With caddies, no need to fiddle with the BIOS, drivers & co every time you insert your chosen opus. No need to work with compressed files any longer, every word in every line of code is always instantly available to be corrupted....

tazoc,
Still enjoying your latest although I've stuck with KDE4 and haven't checked out your other features. It appears to be your best yet.
I use Thunderbird for mail and the version included worked fine, however, it's had two updates and is now at version 3.0 which has some nice new features, as noted in the update info below:

from this link you can download thunderbird 3.0 pet. I did and installed. At least thunderbird seems to work and tells it is 3.0 version.
Thunderbird is also quite easy to install from tarball. Updating over existing Thunderbird is something I havent done though.
