@ant2ne AVG isn't all that great on Linux I always recommend Avast, even F-Prot I see as being quite a bit better than AVG and they're both much lighter.

DPUP5520. Would it be a good idea to provide a "working" Antivirus program that has the latest (at the time of your build) signatures at the time on your build so that there is NO need to go to the internet to use the Live media CD?

If you think this a good idea for the community, it may be an addition in your next RESCUE.

The problem, and only problem with having the AV all ready to go on download is quite simply that a key is required for avast which you obviously would need to go online to get anyway (I'm keeping the browser issue in mind from the PM). So therefore, I think I will leave avast the way it is and people can take it or leave it (I personally prefer it to any of AV software for linux) and I will add in F-Prot in the next version since AVG is too big (and not all that great) and everything else either costs money or pretty much sucks (my own opinion) for linux. I am going to redo PupRescue again when I get time (and CDs) and I am also going to be redoing Puppy Crypt at the same time too so it will be slow going.
I am curious to get an opinion of whether I should keep lucid as the base since it's good for older and newer computers or should I switch over to Slacko and focus on computers built within the last 5 or 6 (or so I've heard) years.

Understand the AVAST requirement and you are clear about your concerns about other AV tools.

One that you did not mention which is a benefit is CLAM. I just used TRK which ships with CLAM operational (even though 6 months old), the operational version found and remove a nasty virus from a PC that one parishner had on his laptop.

Whether its the most liked or not, CLAM as a first sop has always worked for me. And this case is an example.

Its a thought for some who may download your distro and simply boot as a first-line of offense should the need arise.

As a note of my use, I NEVER connect any PC that has a suspected virus to ANY LAN. I totally understand that if the OS with the virus is NOT running, it SHOULD be of no consequence as long as an alternative OS is being booted, but, still, it has been better for me to NOT connect until I'm sure the suspected PC has gone thru some measure of cleanliness before proceeding.

I'm running Rescue Puppy now because I'm between hard drives at the moment (my BIOS so far won't pick up my new one), and I'm booting from a savefile on a 4 GB USB pendrive. It's not ideal but at least I still have a system I can use

I aim to please. I'm glad to say that I will be back home pretty soon and as soon as I do I will resume work on PupRescue and begin recompiling all the older apps that I maintain on here, unfortunately my connection here sucks so I haven't been able to do much (I'm on a text browser right now). Hope ya'll haven't forgotten about me!

No doubt there Others Out there in iT service space that aRe interested in this Handy Tool!

Just noticed your post, thanks and Merry Christmas to you too. I mainly came out with it because I was quite disappointed in Ubuntu Rescue Remix and some of the other rescue CDs that are out there. It is in use by quite a few IT guys that I've worked with in various places.

I'm using Rescue Pup 2.3 again and it's going great. Only thing is that Firefox is only at version 5.0.1, so I've had to download nearly 40 MB to get it up to date (it didn't give me any choice but just did it automatically, in two goes; once up to Firefox 12 and then up to the latest version, 19.0.2).

@ Colonel Panic: Glad to see that you are getting some good use out of PupRescue. I unfortunately forgot to disable auto-updates for Firefox in the older versions of PupRescue which is not the case in 2.5 and PupRescue Precise.

Avast! is in the system menu, however I would recommend checking out PupRescue Precise located @ http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=84162 which uses ClamAV instead of Avast! and doesn't require a license to use.

Thnx for the reply, I downloaded the updated rescue os as u mentioned in your post, but couldn't find the menu entry for CALMAV . Can u tell me where the menu entry or how I execute it from terminal?

There is no menu entry for ClamAV sorry I should have mentioned that. first thing to do is to update the AV database by running the command freshclam next is to run clamscan recursively in the directory of your choosing. If I wanted to run it to scan my whole windows drive for example i'd do this Hope this helps you out and you can always PM me or ask any other questions about any of the programs or tidbits in either of the PupRescues that you have questions about. And don't worry about it telling you ClamAV is out of date , it was just updated about two weeks ago and was just minor bug fixes which don't affect it's performance in PupRescue.

pup rescue 2.5 does quickpet and ppm work . md5 checked good but it doesn't on my computer live from cd.

Hey there singlshot, sorry but i've been gone a few weeks. No quickpet is not included in PupRescue 2.5 and the PPM has all the package files removed from .Packages so if you take a stock copy of Lucid 5.2.8 and transfer it over to PupRescue 2.5 the PPM will work again.

Edit: As noted in one of my last posts above I do recommend PupRescue Precise over 2.5 due to the changeover from Avast! to ClamAV and the upgrading/bug fixes in a lot of the main tools.
