Fresh manual frugal install to FAT32 USB2 flash. Ext4 save - syslinux 4.04 boot.

Initial boot to desktop with working sound & wired ethernet. Correct res of 1280x1024 with nouveau driver.
Installed T'bird, wallpaper and extra fonts. The following pets were then loaded & tested:

Do you know the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf on the slacko has the 'Artificial oblique, so you can remove the file DejaVuSans-Oblique.ttf from /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF?

The fonts-conf-artificial-bold-1.pet replaces the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf to enable also 'Artificial bold', so that you can remove DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf, DejaVuSans-BoldOblique.ttf and DejaVuSans-Oblique.ttf, that is you need only 1 file - DejaVuSans.ttf.

Only one problem is the Abiword cannot support Bold nor Italic for Sans and the DejaVu font.

You need to run 3 command to refresh the fomt.dir and fonts.scale after you remove the fonts:

The Help -> Contents in Gnumeric is not working for me. I don't understand why. The error message is that "yelp" is not present. But as I recall it worked in Lucid from the beginning (before the gvfs fix)--didn't it also work in previous versions of Slacko? And of course Slacko does not use the same gvfs as Lucid--rather Slacko uses a fix to glib, as I understand it. Could this be a compile option? A really dirty hack is to create a file "yelp" that starts defaultbrowser pointed at http://projects.gnome.org/gnumeric/doc/gnumeric.shtml which works but would give a problem if any other program tried to use yelp.

I am afraid I may have forgotten something about how we fixed it in Lucid, but I can't find any preferences or rc files. One program needed "sensible-browser" as a link to defaultbrowser but I think that was Gimp, and Lucid doesn't have it anyway and the Help in Gnumeric still works. Maybe someone knows....

This program runs, but does not seem to do anything. What is it suppose to do?

The puppy has many network tools and it makes somewhat complex.
We know the issue on the compatibility between network-wizard and the frisbee, but also between the SNS and Networkwizard is a bit complex.

Japanese editions take the Dugal's Networkwizard as the standard, and the SNS and Frisbee optional.

net-setup-20120707.pet has a modified connectwizard that supports easy to install the optional network tools. See the screenshot.
Need to place the optional pets at /usr/local/Frisbee and /usr/local/simple_network_setup. Then the connectwizard finds the optional pets.

net-setup-20120707.pet also has a slight update at /etc/rc.d/rc.network, wait the eth0 interface settles. You also need to modify the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit to enable this improvement.

Of course you need to remove all the contents under /usr/local/simple_network_setup to disable SNS. and the file /usr/local/Frisbee_pack1,tar.gz is not usable.

Add some but nothing removed from the original. The reason the size is smaller is maybe the difference of the compression.
I guess i can slim it down, the fonts, icons and etc.

EDIT: A mystery for me, some stuff under /root in Extract-makepet-1.0.pet is missing in the remastered.
Recommended to re-install the Extract-makepet-1.0.pet.
Also install new arrived gdmap-right-click-1.pet and transmission-2.51-i486-supx.pet.

If boot with option puppy pfix=nox and run xorgwizard at prompt.
Choose probe -
locks up. Just get black screen lockup.
Select choose -
None of the Nvidea driver options work. Just get black screen lockup.
Select Vesa driver-
That works OK and can make usable settings and get to desktop.

I speculate that the nouveau module does not like your particular card.
I suggest you blacklist nouveau in BOOT MANAGER, create a save file somewhere
and after re-booting install shinobar's nvidia-glx-295.59-k3.2.22-4g.pet which
does, according to nvidia.com support, your card.

Some hardware fails to get the graphical desktop automatically.
Need to pfix=nox as bigpup did. But it is not easy to type for new comers.

That is why i propose graphical boot menu with 'Safe mode'(pfix=nox,ram).

There are other times this would be useful too.
However, I wonder if a new user would know what to do, when this safe mode, booted him to the prompt?

Yes, is a problem. the lupq-511 and the japanese versions offers 'xorgwizard' with dialog automatically.


And i am not sure he find the 'Advanced menu'.

One idea is to make the menu to be self explains.

While you are talking about a boot menu. What about an entry that would do the same as if you hit F2? Take you to the boot options screen.
Something like:

Maybe Japanese difficulty.
1. Hard to read long explanations in english.
2. Japanese keyboard layout is different with us, the boot loader assumes. That is, we need to type '^' in Japanese keyboard instead of '='.
Must be more difficult with other keyboard layouts. Even typing 'xorgwizard'.
