Mavrothal and all,

I've PM-ed Smokey to set something up so I can upload the 64-bit builds (ISOs & DEVXs) I've done so far. But, as Billtoo notes, anybody that plays with them does so at their own risk. I've an Xenial 64 pup, there's 2 Tahr64s with two diff kernels. Lastly, there's also a Slacko64 6.9.6.4 with the latest 4.2.5 kernel. I've been using this Slacko64-6.9.6.4 for a few days now. I've tried nearly everything in it, and I cannot find a problem with it yet. As for the Debian Jessie 64 pup I am trying to build, that is going to take more time & experimentation as the build scripts just aren't seeing many packages I've had to either find and/or compile.

Same goes for anything else in that folder.

Is this a 32 or 64 bit? If it's 64, I am going to stop building a 64-bit Debian Jessie pup because your Stretch, bill, would be what I was looking for.

Thanks, All credit and blame too I guess goes to @jlst, I just followed the instructions on page 1 of this thread.

I found that the libreoffice works well and the google-earth from a version of tahrpup too.

EDIT: I used the FbBox Control Center to get libreoffice, the new version of FbBox won't be available for a couple of weeks.

Ok I just got the compiler working, I also have all the desktop icons working, The compiler was a bit of a trial and error, I downloaded a 35 packages from debian and the last 3 worked. Well Now that I have a working compiler time to compile a newer version of the compiler, one that works, lol

Here's the clipit pet I compiled on stretch, I made it autostart so you have a clipboard on the bottom of the screen.
Just install it and restart JWM or start it in the utility section of your menu.

Here the latest beaver text editor compiled on stretch it has all the plugins also, only thing I never liked on beaver VS Leafpad is the line numbers aren't along the side, its on the bottom of the screen, Other than that its way better than Leafpad, It has a way better search and copy, etc.

Hello all.

I corrected the numbers in my post about file permissions here. The numbers
should have been "7 5 4" and not "6 1 6". I apologize for any confusion.

Since the mirai incident (this is the thread initiated by Mike7 about it), I
routinely change the permissions for busybox to 754 on all my Pups. For
good measure, I also change those of bash, gawk or mawk, and lsof (if
the real lsof is installed) to 754.

This one-liner does the job:

Code: Select all

for i in busybox bash gawk lsof;do chmod 754 $i;done
Please adapt to your needs.

I noticed no difference whatsoever in performance after editing the
permissions of those major Puppy Linux utilities.

IHTH. BFN.

Ha-ha! Can't hide your Canadian origin, can you?

Joke aside, thanks for those two compilations.

BTW, what's the ldd version (aka glibc version) for this Dpup Stretch?
Silly me, I didn't notice this afternoon. TIA.

An external consideration is that this Dpup Stretch puts us ahead of the
pack, IMO, since Debian hasn't even published its own Stretch yet. We
should polish it as much as we can, and give it a couple of simple extras
generally not found in other distros.

Then, if we play our cards right, timely publication and announcements
may regain a few positions for Puppy on Distro Watch. Just a thought.

BFN.

I think with the release of stretch Debian is moving away from being an orthodox, overly cautious distro. For example, Debian releases have always had two gcc versions - like gcc-4-8 and gcc 4-9 in Jessie. Not anymore, says Matthias Klose (Canonical/Ubuntu/Debian lead developer):
As announced a year ago [1], GCC 6 will be the default GCC for the Debian stretch release. GCC 6 is now available in testing, and can be made the default by installing the gcc/g++ packages from experimental. Known build failures are reported at [2] seen on amd64. Build failures for more architectures (but done for Ubuntu packages) can be seen at [3]. Please help fixing these issues in testing/unstable. Some help how to approach build issues can be found at [4]...

...It is my goal to release stretch without GCC 4.9 and GCC 5...
https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-a ... 00007.html
Quite an aggressive move, especially in the light of this article:
Hundreds Of Ubuntu Packages Are Failing To Build With GCC 6

Not sure about dpup Stretch, but the "true" Debian says:

We should sit at the same table at a Tim's sometime!

Maybe invite don570 (he's in the area too) and see if a meeting of eager
beavers ;) would have any effect on Puppy's future. :)

Thanks for that. Downloaded and been having a bit of a look.

Wonder why we have mpv in there with a menu entry? Will gnome-mplayer work with mpv and no MPlayer? I believe SMPlayer will but I was a bit puzzled.

On my Dell Vostro with integrated intel graphics the modesetting driver loads. Earlier Puppies usually load the intel driver. I can switch to intel but there are a few font glitches.

I compiled the latest Mplayer with GUI its large because it makes its own ffmpeg 16mb extracted. But it works, When I go full screen and hit esc to get out of full screen it crashes.

@OscarTalks

Gnome Mplayer isn't in PPM, Smplayer and Smtube are, Smplayer uses mpv.
Vlc-2.2.4 is also in PPM (must run as spot), it can be used with
Smtube.
I compiled Mplayer-1.3.0, screenshot shows it running from the command
line playing a movieDVD fullscreen.
Kodi-17 is in PPM but needs Nvidia,Radeon, or newer Intel graphics, g31
chip couldn,t run Kodi.

This pc has an Nvidia Card installed in it:
