also noticed something else in mine maybe related on burniso2cd fonts missing
I'll have a look at that at some point..
still lovin akita buildpet and src2pkg are awesome
would like to learn more about how to make scripts for buildpet too ! i also would like to say thanks again i am learning alot with akita and your help is much appreciated ! THANK YOU
To learn how to make build scripts for buildpet, the best thing to do is edit an existing buildscript in /usr/share/buildpet/*... Basically you need to change PKG_NAME, PKG_VER, the URL of the source code, and maybe add some steps in build() func, to create a pinstall for the package, or move/remove files from it, before it's packaged up...

I have re-uploaded the Xfce4 package in the repo,
I have fixed Thunar so that it now has the right click options that I added (see screenshot),
..but the problem that menu settings are messed up/unorganized at first launch remains..
The fix is a double install of the xfce pkg..
The easiest way to download & install it (twice) is with these terminal commands (you can use TAB auto-complete for pkg names):
Code: Select all
pkg --repo akita
pkg --update-repo
pkg -g xfce4
pkg -f -i xfce4-4.10-i486-akita
That will install xfce and all deps, then re-install xfce..
The other problem is this: MIME settings in the package dont work as expected once xfce starts... maybe I have bad settings in the xfce package for mime types, not sure..
I wanna sort this, not fail at this.. I REALLY wanna get past this double-install-menu-fix, and hopefully fix MIME settings (not too bothered about that tho...)

I think I have totally fixed the xfce4 package, so I've re-uploaded it.. Testers welcome!
Menus should be nicely organised, no double 'internet' categories, mime types should be loaded up as i saved them, and all right click options in thunar should work fine...
finally... and it's only about 5mb inc all deps

Hmmm... No idea - maybe re-install gnocl, or install using Pkg instead of normal PPM...? If all else fails, you can still use those same great apps without the gnocl dep i insisted on - Just get the apps straight from their homepage (Puppyt linked to it earlier)...
EDIT:: You could then put all the pets in the same dir, open a terminal and do
(notice the dot at the end),
..this will re-package them all as one pet, as I did with the gnocl requiring versions..

instead of wish rush, you could try the 'gentoo' file manager in the repo ... the interface is VERY similar... or if ur looking for something powerful and fast, then midnight commander is included in akita by default... Just type 'mc' in the terminal...

wishrush works fine on akita if
gnocl-0.9.92.pet is installed.
The later gnocl-0.9.95.pet has additional dependencies of libinotify, libdbus & libdbus-glib.

Hi Sc0ttman
i did a new frugal install to see if wish apps would work sorry to say i had no success
Must be a result of switching kernel
Anyway MC is cool i have played with it in the past on other puppies
I will continue to try and resolve the issue when i feel like it ! I installed them on my daughters pc
and all wish apps work fine
Anyhow when i did my new install i updated ppm and noticed buildpet is missing and maybe depends also ! I already had the pets saved to my hd but thought you would want to know
Also again thanks for everything i am learning so much from akita and your help
the documentation in akita is wonderful thanks for takeing the time to include it in Akita
Also wanted to tell you i did another kernel switch using wary 5.3 kernel in Akita but is for single core cpu as you already know but if you or if you know of anyone who would like to check it out please let me know and i will upload it ! iI plan on trying it out on daughter pc at some point
Thanks again Sc0ttman for everything

I got the same old craptop running again (don't ask me how I got it working again). Well Akita was a couple versions old so grabbed the lastest and it runs. I am still having major issues with wireless, but the device now works (because I grabbed a package containing the "rt3070sta" module for 2.6.25.16). The interface is "ra0" (instead of "wlan0") which I believe is the culprit for why..
...fails to work. How can I force the interface to be "wlan0" and not "ra0"?

here is another browser choice:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 851#697851
I did a fully static build of netsurf with the xcb and linux framebuffer backends (instead of the normal gtk2 build) there are 2 versions - one has builting fonts only, the other uses freetype, but both support most image formats (ico/bmp, png, gif, jpeg and even some webp and svg images) and has https and some rudimentary javascript support. I think the freetype version looks better than seamonkey and it uses only ~8Mb of RAM.
I redid the desktop icons and binary name so that it can be installed along side of the gtk2 version. (btw the gtk2 version now has gstreamer support if anyone wants to give it a try)
Akita vs Wary

I'm testing Wary 4.5 and Akita B14 on a Wyse SX0 366mhz thin client box and both work fairly well, but Akita is much faster while launching apps. For example, rxvt term takes 4-7 seconds in Wary to display the console prompt, whereas Akita only takes 2 seconds. Anyone know why?
I've only been running Akita for a day, so I'm a novice, but I've used Linux for the last 15 years. So far, I only have two issues, first is a missing iwlagn wireless driver, which I'm sure I can fix by recompiling the kernel.
The more interesting problem is after installing/uninstalling several web browsers, my 1gb sfs ext3 formatted save file, though having lots of free space (84%), now reports that it is low on free blocks so I can't install anything else. Is this a common issue or has anyone else seen this? Is there a way to free unused blocks?
Back to searching the forums.

speed

The speed problem with Wary 5.5 (not 4.5 as I mis-stated) was due to LANG=en_US.UTF8. After changing it to en_US the speed of Wary is now as fast as Akita. Now to find out why. Note that this issue is only probably noticeable on a super slow cpu.

nope, there is an extensive set of posts related to performance of LANG=C vs utf8 on Barry's blog... I can also tell you that busybox ash is faster than bash 3.2.x which is much faster than 4.x.x
sh _should_ be a link to busybox NOT bash - if it breaks a script, the the script is defective and the #!/bin/sh should be changed to #!/bin/bash
to make performance even faster, you can take precaution to make all /bin/sh scripts compatible with busybox builtins (for ex. busybox wget only supports the most common options and stat only recognizes short options) and build busybox with "standalone shell" and "exec prefers applets"

I agree, if your going to use busybox, then use it! This gives me something to play with at least. This is my first use of a Linux system that utilizes an overlay file system, which is cool for making easy to deploy modified versions.
It feels good to play with a simple Linux like this again.

Unlike other Puppies, Akita runs 'xwin', 'delayedrun', 'pup_event_frontend_d' and many other background processes using ash instead of bash.. I made those changes long ago... removed the bashisms from those scripts, and others.. It also uses the static 'init' binary in place of the traditional puppy shell script.. At one point I had it setup to use less RAM than TurboPup, just by reducing the number of processes running, removing wallpaper, etc

That explains why I immediately noticed that Akita felt much faster. Since you already did the bash tweaks, I'll focus on recompiling the kernel for the wlan module my notebook needs. Then I can really try it out.
Is there any compelling reason to stick with squashs3 vs 4?

other than the SFS files in the repo all being sfs3, no ... If you are happy to wait a little while for them to be converted to sfs4 before you load/install them, then it should be fine.. (the converting is done automatically, and akita has an updated/custom Edit-SFS app, so sfs files can be more easily converted with the right click options..)
