Domain Name Server Benchmark

The size of the app is only 163 kio and can be used with Wine. No installation is required.

DNS Benchmark is comparable to Namebench software, but it is easier to understand the results, once the test is done. A brief commentary helps you with your choice of DNS resolvers, either it tells you to stay with your actual provider, or to change for a faster one, a public DNS resolver, such as OpenDNS. The area you live in has an impact on your choice, since all public DNS resolvers can be fast or not for you, therefore the benchmark is useful to determine which is best for you.

I tried the app which is very easy to use, and has no impact on your system. You can even build a custom resolver list, which takes into consideration the area you live in; otherwise, it is the built-in list that applies. The building of this cutom list is easy, it is built from your web browsing history, and done automatically. The result is more meaningful than with the buit-in list of popular IP addresses from all over the world.

The mecanism to change your DNS resolver in Puppy is not as easy as in other OS. From what i know, Frisbee Netwok Manager has a section refering to the DNS, allowing the user to change the DNS addresses (the first and the second address, acting as a backup).

You can have a look at the commentary you could have at the end of the test.

The changing of DSN resolver is sometimes desirable, when you experiment some slowness from your actual DNS resolver, or if you prefer not to depend on your ISP for privacy concerns. Your ISP being able to block access to some content, due to legal obligations, and being able to do so via control of DNS resolver.
