#1 Post by Buzz1170 »

I have just installed the Gnome puppy linux dotpup file.

The folder popped up with Gnome in it

I clicked on the Gnome icon with the picture of a gear on it

Nothing happened

What do I do?

I typed Gnome in the command window and it said:
gnome-panel: error while loading shared libraries: libpangocairo-1.0.so.0:cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
nautilus: error while loading shared libraries: libpangocairo-1.0.so.0:cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
You must install the Gtk-dotpup, too.
Please install all dotpups mentioned in this message:

did you install the Gnome-dotpup too from my last message?
There was an older package around, that was broken.
You need the one from my last message.

You might have to reboot after installation.

if you still get errors after a reboot, try this:

install:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/System_Utilities/ldconfig.pup

Then in a consolewindow type:
ldconfig

Ok, I keep recieving the same error messages.

I removed all Gnome dotpups and files needed for it

Can you send me the links to the downloads in the order they need to be downloaded in?

By the way, thanks for all your help with this. I realize I'm probably a pain...

ok, I will re-check it this weekend with a new puppy.
Maybe I forgot to update something in the dotpups, Gnome is quite complex.
Thanks for testing it :)

Hi MU,

First time posting after lurking for a couple of months. ;)

I think after you get all of the packs sorted out (of course no hurry whatsoever!) I might like to give that Gnome a run for its money along with Buzz if you don't mind? But will all the packages be available for download via DotPup and will you provide a list here in one post of what we need to grab? (For those of us who have poor eyesight and memory?) I'm really kind of new to all of this you see so I wouldn't know anything about installing it myself unfortunately. Yet I'd sure love to give it a try!

Currently using Grafpup with IceWM/KDE, Xfce in my ZenWalk, and of course JWM in my Puppy (My grandkids are wild over the "Pound Puppy" wallpaper!)... so trying Gnome out would be rather neat!

Thanks for your help and looking forward with Buzz to being a "guinea pig". :D

yes, I will check it, and then update the message about gnome.
Gnome will be 3 parts + addons.
Gtk
Goffice
Gnome

The first 2 are simply a upgrade of existing libraries in Puppy.
The 3rd is Gnome itself, at least the panel and the filemanager.

Then there will be addons on request, there currently is only a dotpup of the Gnome-webbrowser Epiphany.

I will not add more dotpups without request, as they would fill a whole CD and it would take weeks to create them.

Nice to read you again, dear test-rabbit ;)

Okay, so after you update everything, you're gonna post the links to the downloads in this forum, right?

Everything in the other forum is kinda confusing, no offense.

Thanks again for all your help!

Hmm...

Makes me wonder Mark the way you said that... you seem to think that you perhaps recognise me from somewhere? I'm new to Linux, however, I'm old when it comes to Mozilla/Gecko development. Perhaps we've met there? I've been puzzling this out all night and day but I can't seem to place you. :-\

And like Buzz (sort of): I was actually hoping that if these worked they would be made Dotpups so the "Good Puppy" could automagically install the packages. Where I'm so new to Linux (I've rarely ever run the terminal! Did that more in 98se!) unless the directions are VERY explicite I will get terribly confused. -sigh- :(

Another thing I'm curious about: I know that Nathan is likewise on this forum at times. ;) I wonder if he seems to think that this Gnome would also interface with the current GrafPup 1.0.4? Then I could run it on both Puppies for the price of one, see? Probably couldn't as I think GrafPup is forked from 1.0.9 Puppy and this is being tried on 2.0.2---a LOT of difference now between the two though Nathan is working on basing the next upon 2.0.2 I believe...

Ah! Linux and Puppy!---is this much FUN really legal now? LOL!

Amicalement mes amis! mfg MU! ;)

Ah sorry, I thought of someone else, we had cleared some confusion about the word guinea-pig that I did not know. I had used the (wrong) german translation "test rabbit" before ;)
Someone told me the right expression then, but I don't remember who.

This Gnome will not run in Grafpup, as it needs a newer Glib (I think).
But you should be able to use it in Grafpup, if you install the Gtk-dotpup, too, this would "upgrade" Grafpup the same way Puppy is upgraded.

This should work, but as I did not test it myself, one should test it carefully with a new pup001 first, as I cannot guarantee it will not break things.

As I mentioned, Gnome is kind of complex, and complex software that overwrites existing files, always bears the risk of breaking working stuff.

I also would not expect too much from this Gnome.
I personally don't use it, as I think, Puppy currently has better solutions.

Instead of the Panel I use Icewm plus the XFCE-taskbar, instead of Nautilus I use XFileExplorer and Thunar.

This Gnome is basically intended to make it possible, to run aditional Gnome-applications on request, if you know one, that has no good equivalent program in Puppy.
My Gnome-Dotpups provide all the libraries (hopefully all), that are needed to run Gnome-applications, that would not run without these libraries.

Gnome had an error.
See this message for a complete list of all corrected dotpups:

Whoa... that's looking a little more than a newbie like me can handle. :-\ That sure looks like an interesting thread though Mark! I think perhaps I'll watch that and see how it comes out between you and revolutionist. :)

Also, thunar and that Gnome bar sure look awesome on Puppy! Sharp! Especially the thunar. I have that in my ZenWalk along with Rox 2.4.1---I have to have my Rox, especially since seeing how versatile it is in Puppy & Grafpup! hehe! ;)

Keep up the fabulous work Mark. As you may know from the other post, I come from the MozillaZine forum and you'd be surprised at how many meet Linux for the first time via Puppy Linux and actually have it installed on the hard drive as compared to the larger distros and are more than satisfied with that. That's how I got interested in it and Grafpup together. :)

note that you will not gnome for Thunar.

Don't be afraid of the many links...
As this are all dotpups, they are easy to install.
Simply download them and click on them in Rox.

And Thunar is available now since 2 weeks or so, and works for KLHRevolutionist.
He actually just has problems with the Gnome-webbrowser, I think he might not have Puppy 2.02. That is a problem if a program depends on such a "beast" like Seamonkey (mozilla), you need exactlythe same version for programs that depend on it.
