Flash alternatives?

#1 Post by Mike Walsh »

Afternoon, all.

With all the hoo-ha floating about with regard to FlashPlayer's 'woes' this last few days, I was just wondering what alternatives there are that would work in Puppy, in its place?

I watch vids sometimes (though not that often). I do, however, listen to streaming audio on Radiotunes.com nearly every single day.

Anybody have any useful suggestions, 'twill be much appreciated.

Regards,

Mike. :)

I looked at the radiotunes.com website. It appears that if you sign up for an account, you can switch to a Winamp-style player. That suggests that you could access a .PLS stream that would work in several Puppy media players.

Great minds think alike. There's zero reason to let a Flash laden site eat your CPU's.

One such example:

Code: Select all

mpg123 -@ http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-station.pls?id=497929
If the vids are mostly hosted by YT >> http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=76835

@Semme, rcrsn51:-

Definitely not! I loathe YouTube; visit it very rarely (only if I have to watch a tutorial, or something).....normally avoid it like the plague.

One reason I like the Radiotunes site is that on the free account (yeah, I'm a skinflint!), the bit-rate for playback is quite low; works out to about 22 MB/hr. Many other streaming sites can be anything up to 4 or 5 times that.....and to my mind (or should I say my ears !) the difference in sound quality is absolutely negligible.

I also have to watch my data consumption, as our IP has given us a 20 GB/month 'cap'. It's why I started the 'BitMeterOS' thread in 'Networking'; I'd been using it for almost a year, and thought other folks might like to benefit from my experience.

I wouldn't mind using a Winamp-type audio player, but... I think that's rather a lot of money per year just to be able to do so. I know GNASH is essentially 'dead-in-the-water'; I haven't heard anything favourable about it for quite sometime. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't stream music anyway; I believe it's a 'stand-alone' player?

You could argue that it's my own tough luck that my personal preferences prevent me from accessing one of the biggest repositories of video content on the planet, but..... I just detest the commercialism that goes with it.

It also astounds me how most developers seem to assume that everyone using technology today (unless you're talking mobile, which is a different beast altogether) must be running top-of-the range tech; big screens, high-end graphic cards, high-end, immensely powerful processors, massive amounts of RAM, huge storage devices (hard drives, but mostly SSD's), etc, etc. Because most software appears to be written with this in mind.

Kinda leaves many 'Puppy' users out in the cold. We're looked down on as the 'poor' relations, to some extent.....because many of us use such old hardware.

Mike.

From my reading of the radiotunes.com website, if you have a free account, you can change your player to something other than Flash.

Mm. Perhaps I've read that wrong, then. I'll have to look further into that. Thanks for the info.

One thing, while I think about it. If it should be the case that I can change to some other type of player, how would you go about getting the Puppy apps to work with the PLS stream? I take it you would need to enter a URL somewhere along the line.

Well, I've tried switching from Flash in Radiotunes to VLC. Selected 'Stream'; copy/pasted the URL in (having set Radiotunes to stream to VLC). Hit play, and.....nothing. Spent at least 10 minutes messing around with the audio settings. Makes no difference whether I select PulseAudio, or Alsa. Neither will give even a glimmer of sound.

So I've switched it back to Flash for now.

For listening music, do you know this?
https://github.com/np1/mps

No Flash needed, but yes python.

With this I've found a nice surprise searching for "seether careless whisper"

Enjoy.

What URL did you type into VLC? It should be something like Semme's example

Code: Select all

http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-station.pls?id=497929

@ rcrsn51:-

The URL I copy/pasted was as follows:-

Code: Select all

http://www.radiotunes.com/mellowsmoothjazz
That's the URL for the page I most commonly listen to. It's a very straight-forward one; none of the usual qualifiers, or other stuff.

Mike.

@Semme: That PLS link connects for me, but says that I need the premium package to actually play music.

No such message from here in NY.

Their premium account is roughly .25/day.
