Puppy Web Desktop

#1 Post by technosaurus »

Edit: 7 DEC 2008 Page is back up & I have added pet packages and a new theme, links and search engines

I have created a Puppy Portal page for web apps at:
http://pupweb.org/desktop

So far the start menu contains the 100+ web app sites recommended on TMXXINE's site (http://tmxxine.com/g/) for easy menu-style access as well as from other puppy user's recommended sites including a favorites menu search boxes and other Puppy related stuff,

Still adding desktop links, apps and searches while trying to keep the size around 100k

If you would like to have a web app site added please use the following template to submit it:
Category:(Any category or subcategory in the start menu)
<li><a href="http://www.urlofsite.com" title="Brief description of the app">NameOfApp</a></li>

If you would like to have a link added please use the following template to submit it:
Category:Link-(Any category or subcategory in the favorites menu)
<li><a href="http://www.urlofsite.com" title="Brief description of the linked site">NameOfSite</a></li>

If your category is not already included - even better - that just means we will get a more inclusive suite of apps

I am trying to provide the most & best web apps possible in an easy to use livecd companion site and am not a "resident expert" on web apps so using the templates will help out a lot especially considering I cannot access many of the sites from my work computer

I have to admit technosaurus---that's fascinating as well as brilliant IMVHO!

BRAVO! Two thumbs up for your efforts to date sir! Continue the good work started here and I'm looking forward to seeing what you accomplish/where you go with this one. :)

Likewise, since I see you've made 11 posts to date, welcome to the Puppy Kennels! I hope you enjoy it here as much as the rest of us do!

Again: BRAVO!

Amicalement/Cheers!

Well done technosaurus - very good.

Some of these online services are moving to no registration (good)
but offering a subscription (leasing software) service

eg.
http://www.picnik.com/

The ones that win will offer
no registration, full basic, full with ads (to pay the bills)
full no ads for those with money

Then public services such as the BBC (just starting out with their software offerings on CBBC)
will offer an all free service
(open source eventually after a battle for it)

We all win

Here is a Linux News service you might like to include:
http://www.linuxleak.com/

I hope Tronkel makes this the default for the Community Edition
Puppy Raspup 8.2Final 8)
Puppy Links Page http://www.smokey01.com/bruceb/puppy.html :D

Thanks for the tips & praise - I will add the sites to my links in my next run - I am a little burnt out on it for now, and also awaiting feedback for improvements. Its easier to make a bunch of changes at once. I will probably add a links section in the next coding session for news and other linux related sites - basically puppy bookmarks in a similar dropdown menu.

Dingo - thanks for the linkage - maybe Puppy will see fit to give it a permanent home soon?

Eyes - Thanks for the props. I've browsed the kennel since '05 - just never had much useful to say before.

If anyone has suggestions (more search engines, apps or links) or runs into any problems with the configuration with smaller screen sizes etc..- let me know - I would rather change it now while it's less than 1000 lines since I am using Geany on MacPup to code it (I did cheat and use Seamonkey Composer to generate the table code - I always miss some tag in tables for some reason)

hi technosaurus,

this one is a realy great start.

may i place some wishes?

- A Puppy-Search like this http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html would be great as it is much better than the forum search.

- If this should become a starting point it would maybe be better to start the links in a new frame. But i think this point is often discussed on such projects...

cheers

Very nice as home page.
I second aragon's request for the puppysearch link (see my sig)
It would be nice to have Barry Kauler's blog added also.
The puppy pet just points to the forum. Is this done on purpose?
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Use peppyy's [url=http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html]puppysearch[/url]

forum search

#8 Post by technosaurus »

Sounds good - I think I will replace the Download icon with the forum search and put the download link in the Puppy favorites/bookmarks drop-down menu. I will also post a link to the forum search in favorites menu (I don't want to clutter the page with too many icons) and hopefully add the search form directly to the page - possibly even configure the google search to look in the forum using a radio button? - I haven't really done this stuff since 1997 so I'm a little rusty and things have definitely changed, but fortunately google and others do try to maintain some backwards compatibility with older browsers.

Thanks to all for the timely suggestions.

Updates for the next few days will be frequent - sometimes multiple times per hour so refresh your browsers if need be.

Ok, I added a links section and a forum search icon. Unless I get feedback otherwise I am eventually going to make a few more simplified versions for testing - I will still keep this one up, but I want a simpler, less confusing (and faster loading) version as well
1 Zoho Apps + what they lack
2 Google Apps + what they lack
3 Best Apps overall for each category (This is where I may need some input)

If anyone would like to play with it to make their own web desktop, I am trying to keep the body of the code simple enough for easy cut and paste (mostly cut) editing in Geany - all of the images are available in MacPup. (For instance if you want all of the office categories in the main section its just 2 cuts - I only added the subcategory function to prevent the menu from going off of smaller screens)

Added minimal version

#10 Post by technosaurus »

I have added:
1. a minimal version for slower connections with mostly zoho apps
http://www.openplatformeducation.org/zohodesk.html
(let me know if there are better apps for slower connections and i will update accordingly) It obviously doesn't look as nice, but that was just to minimize load time

2. Forum search added - then removed - see #3

3 Configured google search to automatically give a radio button to search the forum in case you don't immediately find what you are looking for on the web (including all puppy sites, how-to pages and wikkis) I thought this would be good for a lost puppy just looking for help. This returns the same basic info that the forum search does, but it takes two searches, will add radio button in the future so its just one search.

4. More links in the favorites menu

I am currently crawling the puppy sites for more good links

Next step is to add whatever good links I come across to Favorites and update the dropdown menus under the icons to add the alternative selections (most are already in the start menu - I only added the icons this soon to get a feel for the overall look)

MacPup Start Page

#11 Post by technosaurus »

Ok - I have it looking decent now with most of the stuff I wanted, I have even created a start page for MacPup that uses it's backgrounds and icons directly from the file system - just save it anywhere on your file system to view it with the backgrounds and icons.

Its at http://www.openplatformeducation.org/mpstart.html
or as tgz http://www.openplatformeducation.org/mpstart.tgz

Should this be included in the next community edition?

Web Desktop for 4.1 alpha 6

#13 Post by technosaurus »

The Newest version was designed specifically for the next release of Puppy (4.1) if you are testing the alpha release you can download the my proposed start page at http://www.openplatformeducation.org/homeb.tar.gz

I have now included all of Barry's help files in the favorites menu as well as links to many Puppy sites, things are a bit reorganized so that I could add more functionality and 4 new icons/categories. Searches are moved to the panel bar and search buttons are removed(just press enter) I managed to condense and organize most of the links on all of the various puppy help pages down into this one page.

My goal is to add 1 category per day to the desktop area - The games section is taking me a little longer and will probably be last unless I get some input here - its hard to find "free" sites -anyone know of some good ones?

Hmm... I'm rather curious about something Techno: I've opened the .gz file and have placed the "homeb.htm" off into a temp directory for the moment (I'm in Parsix and not Puppy---needed a change after being in Puppy all day), and I've loaded this file into my SeaMonkey browser to see what it looks like, how it would "render" up.

Rather interesting and here's what I'm curious about: My background is pitch-black as a moonless night. Should it be rendering this way? Now admittedly, BOTH my Puppy and my Parsix are using a gtk2 theme that makes the GUI black. In Parsix it's a version of "Aurora-Midnight" -goes off to check- and in Puppy it's "Nodoka-Midnight" which works off the "Aurora-Midnight" theming engine in gtk2.

So should my homeb.htm be rendering as black? If you'd like I can boot into my Mandi desktop and try there. That's working off the "Glossy Clearlooks" gtk2 engine.

I hope someone gives you hints for games. I think this is a really fab idea still! :D

Amicalement/Cheers!

So far the start menu contains the 100 web app sites recommended on TMXXINE's site (http://tmxxine.com/g/) for easy menu-style access

Still working on the desktop links and trying to keep the size under 100k (excluding background)
Tell ya the truth, I like it, I just tried it and well the live bookmarks is a great idea. As for the background you included well , ummm why not just use the default background loaded into every puppy? /usr/share/backgrounds/default.jpg
That would reduce the size and plus if anybody wanted to change the background they would just have to rename it?
Excellent all around work, I had similar idea about 14months back but never got around to doing it, I won't get into now because its real complicated, but anyways excellent work :)

Yes, and could you please have a box for "Puppy Projects", or at least instructions to people how to add one (that is, if they do a remaster).

Thanks for your efforts!

background image - initially chosen because I loath figuring out color schemes to work with the background so I switched background till it looked decent. This is no longer an issue with most versions of puppy since I switched the default background and text color (white on black versus black on white) -however 4.1a6 default.jpg does not play nice (I left the background black for this reason and it actually looked nice - but then again I am a minimalist) - that version is the most updated and is at:
http://pupweb.org/desktop/
I am adding as many puppy links as possible and will update with default background set now that I switched the color scheme.

I haven't decided on the best "add your puplet link" since there are forum threads, wikki articles and sites to actually upload them - leaning toward the wikki - maybe this icon should be called "puppy breeders" though?

the black on white version with default background is at http://www.openplatformeducation.org/homeb.html

Hiya Tech! :D

YES!! I much prefer the second (html) version over the former (htm) anytime! :) And I guess that's really odd too especially seeing where my Puppy 4.00 and Parsix are both running the "Nokoda-Midnight" theme engine (now) which turns regular onboard app's backgrounds, like ROX-Filer, EmelFM2, Leafpad, et al, a nice lite-black! :D (And that really IS "Lite-Black" and not "grey" despite my colourblindness. hehe!)

This second one, to me anyway, looks great 'nuff "as-is" Tech that I could even run it as a browser's homepage totally without a background pic.

Hmm... Gives me an idea... ;)

Great work mate!

EDIT #1: DUH! Do I feel like I nutcase Tech! I just realised something!---IF I'd test these pages out on my Puppy partition I'd be MUCH better off as then I'd see the backgrounds, images, yada, yada... I feel like such an OAF! Beam me up Scotty!
