How to use SmartLink USB dialup modem?

I have a SmartLink USB modem which is also id/ed as:

ID 0483.7554 Thomson Microelectronics 56K SoftModem

... by scanModem.

Using the default tools in Puppy Precise retro 5.7.1, the modem probe works, but dialing does not produce dialtone or dialing sounds and does not connect.

Besides the scanmodem info, I also have logs from Windows successfully using the modem.

What information would be useful for me to post here to aid me in getting the modem to work with Puppy? The information in one of the scanmodem files says:

'For USB modems with ID 0483.7554 use Smartlink driver slusb.ko'

I don't know how to do that.
