This is Proof of Concept. See down the page for a testing iso image (32 and 64 bit versions available).

To address many issues with booting to desktop I have created a branch of woof-CE called "xorg". Discussion is here (issue 583).

Larry (playdayz) brought us 'boot to desktop' with Lucid Puppy around 5 years ago. It was a real innovation, albeit a bit hackish. Barry really didn't like the implementation (with fair reason) and brought about his own implementation first viewed in precise and slacko-5.5. (IIRC - could be earlier).

The trouble is, Barry's way still relied on a fully populated xorg.conf which worked well for some hardwares but was disastrous on some others. (eeepc-701's are a good example of total failure).

Ever since Xorg-7.4 Linux has been able to boot to desktop unaided by any configuration files (ie: xorg.conf). FatDog already does this with a completely different way to start X.

Of course configuration files are still needed in some cases, especially for setting your localised or alternate keyboard map. There is a directory named /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ for such files and there is the possibility to include several of these ranging from simple keyboard layouts to complex accelerometer and joystick setups.

What we are attempting to do here is get at least the basics working, including, but not limited to, keyboard (especially layout), mouse, touchpad (alps, elantech,synaptics), touchscreen and others without relying on xorg.conf.

The key to all of this is udev support (or soon eudev).

So far, only Slacko is known working (maybe, report if not). I may have to build a Devuan/Debian build (due to lack of builders) to make sure it works in deb based puppies. Hopefully though, Iguleder will find some time to test and improve with his librepup derivative (based in trisquel).

NOTE: localised and special keyboard layouts are broken for the moment. It is a work in progress. You can fix it manually. Let us know what you do to fix it.

I'm not interested in other bugs such as slacko specific or woof bugs. They are the topic of another discussion.

hey micko

frugal install to a lenovo x201, booted to desktop, keyboard, mouse and touchpad all fine

quick open of a handful of programs without difficulty

still no wifi (02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (rev 35)), loads iwlwifi but not iwldvm

same issue as all recent slacko 6s

prefer 'traditional' layout

Broadcom wireless isn't supported so using usb adapter which end up covering the usb port next to it so only 2 of 3 usb ports are available.

That's it.

On this E6410, I put the files in a directory on an ext4 hard drive partition.
GRUB4DOS frugal boot results:
Boots to desktop, keyboard works, wired mouse works, touchpad works.

(Oh, like Zigbert, I have no Touchscreen.)

SNS does not work, Frisbee does; Atheros internal wireless.

I'm using the testing Slacko now.

Of course all the other results are good too (ally, zigbert, sheldonisaac) because this is experimental. Connectivity issues are beyond the scope here but no worries, you can continue to report them if you wish.

We are at the beginning of a transitional phase and all results are important.

Desktop with nvidia graphics - boots successfully to desktop, mouse working OK. Will try on laptops later....

However, selecting UK keyboard doesn't work - still types US layout.

Keyboard gives: !@#$%^&*()_+

Unrelated (ignore if you want), are all the packages created fresh for this build or you reuse the ones in your HD from the 6.3.0 build?
I wonder why ngettext is not in the build. It is in the slackware package and it is in the template and yet is missing

Sorry can't test as my 64 bit PC bit the dust and I'm running a older 32 bit. But thanks for the history lesson. I had no idea about that history/capability.

Just downloaded Lupu528 barebone and on this old box plugged into the 42" TV VGA ... and it booted to desktop/net connect fine. Set the display to 1920x1080 (1080p) and it's looking nice. Loaded up portable firefox fine too.

Great that effort is being made to make straight to desktop better/easier. As a newbie a year ago I really struggled with the kit that I had then, modesetting and wireless problems was almost a show stopper for me.

I see you have the - Intel® PowerVR SGX545, a known problem in many kernels. I don't know why it is broken. I'll have to recheck my kernel config. It should work with 'modesetting' xorg driver which will need to be moved from 'drivers-alternate' in with all the drivers.

The problem with NOX is that it still loads the kernel modules. I don't think pfix=nomodeset would help either because vesa doesn't work as far as I know with that chip.

unusable. Just a bunch of lines, partial images, and colors.
Kernel support for this graphics card is probably the problem.

TBH, I'm not real happy with 4 series kernels. While they work on my gear they are failing on lots of others.

I'm uploading a 32 bit version with appropriate improvements (K 3.14.57) which I'm hoping addresses yours and L18L's issues. Announcement soon.

Also I'll upload a delta for the 64 version that attempts to fix non US keyboard layouts (that fix is in the 32 version). It has the same kernel as the original though so won't fix your problem. In my next release I might roll back to 3.18.xx which is an LTS kernel too.

You are right, it definetely works with modesetting only.

@L18L.. I suggest you try the 32 bit version.. I hope it works!

Check out trying the keyboard layout too (if not US). That goes for all users.
