Slacko Puppy v5.7 pae vs non-pae

#1 Post by mgolden »

In a nut shell, Puppy non pae sees my Canon PIXMA MP470 printer and Puppy pae does not.

With the non pae version, the printer shows up on "usb://Canon/MP470%20series".

I can type this port into the CUPS configuration on the pae full install but the printer does not work.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Edit:

I'd like to add, the same is true for my Brother label printer.

Boot from the non pae CD and Puppy sees both USB printers.
Boot pae and Puppy sees neither printer.

Puppy pae DOES work fine with my networked HP printer.

Edit:

My USB mouse and keyboard work fine.

Edit:

Found this today --

Running the "lsusb" command shows both the Canon and Brother printers in pae:

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 530S.

Edit:

On a whim, I booted from the Slacko Puppy 5.7.0 PAE CD. Started CUPS and it sees my two USB printers right off the bat.

What's the difference? The CUPS on the original CD download has 'CUPS 1.4.8' and my full install has 'CUPS 1.5.4'. This came from the 'Updates Manager - Latest from Slackware'.

Has anyone else found 1.5.4 to be buggy?

Is there anyway to revert to 1.4.8 without reinstalling Puppy from scratch?

Should 1.5.4 be removed from the Updates Manager?

Edit:

I downloaded cups-1.4.8-w5c.pet from:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... es-common/

After running the pet, it required a reboot but my pae system now can talk to both USB printers.

My thanks to everyone in the forum who helped me track down this bug.
