Hi again, Geoff.

We've switched providers.....'cos frankly, British Telecom's pricing was getting ridiculous. We're no longer on fibre; we're back on what they call 'standard' broadband. Can't see that it makes a scrap of difference; it's still using the same fibre cable to the street-cabinet around the corner, and the same old copper cables from there to here! Of course, the throttling is done at the street-cabinet/exchange.

Interestingly (if you compare this new test to my previous one, above), d/l has, as expected, slowed down. U/l, however, appears to be nearly five times what BT's was..... Probably because this is early days (we only switched two days ago).....and they're still 'adjusting' the line speeds.

In real-world terms, for what we use t'internet for, there's no noticeable speed penalty at all. And over the length of the contract, we should save quite a bundle of cash.

I have cable : ping 20 ms, down 100 Mbps , up 5 Mbps
Cable is at the same price as ADSL here in France, but you can find it only in cities.

An opinion...but a knowing one.

I presume that means the so called 'last mile'.

If in the FNTTN node, the conversion from fibre to ADSL
is putting an excessive signal strength onto the last bit of
copper it might interfere with ADSL on neighbouring pairs.

Otherwise I'd be concerned that if installing the NBN node,
they have split one or more pairs.

If that is what the point is, I think we are stuck, because Telstra
or NBN are not going to respond to a request to fix it unless there is
clear evidence that they are to blame rather than a vague suggestion (and it might even be a design problem -- fat chance of resolving that).

And there's plenty of anecdotal evidence that Telstra are not
bothering about copper in NBN areas, even though the last 'mile'
is the copper. "

ME to OPTUS
I have a 50 Mbps Download account and can't watch internet channels, connection speed is slow, the channel stall and flash a black screen, they aren't watchable at all, I'm guessing the 50 year old phone lines are full of water after the last few day's of rain, Telstra technician was fixing the neighbors line a week or two back, he tells me that the lines won't be replaced since the NBN company has bought the copper network, the connection is slow most day's anyway, lucky to get anywhere near the speeds I'm suppose to, maybe the early hours of the morning while everyone else on the node are in bed, the connection drops out all together at lest 3 or 4 times a day that I notice, so far this NBN service as been a total let down for me, I see no value with it at a price of $115 a month, it's extremely unreliable.
OPTUS to ME
That's not good to hear Geoffrey. Have you since reported this to our tech guys? Can you also confirm how many devices do you usually connect on this network at home? Marcel
Optus like asking how many device you have everytime you contact them, a ploy to try and pass the problem back to the consumer.

ME to OPTUS
Yes I have reported that I have low speed two times, the last being a couple of weeks ago, I did some test with the tech which confirmed there is a problem with congestion on the line which he tells me they need to fix and they will sms me when it is fixed, even when there is enough speed the internet channels still pause and flash a black screen, as for connections I currently have this PC and my wife's phone connected, I don't have the fetch on as its not watchable, while I'm here, what is the internet channels video resolution suppose to be, as it doesn't appear to be a all that good, looks blocky and blurry which I find annoying, might be ok on a phone or tablet but on a big screen TV is ugly and uninviting, I'm thinking seriously of having this service removed, I can live without the TV and I don't download the movies as they are to expensive, near $6 for old release movies that I can hire for a $1 at the local video store, I'm not angry just totally disappointed that a NBN service that promises to provide higher speeds just doesn't deliver the 50 Mbps I'm allocated. I can understand where you're coming from with this Geoffrey. On NBN the basic plan offers up to 25 Mbps, and if you're looking for higher speeds you'll need to add a speed pack on. Please take a look @ http://www.optus.com.au/shop/support/answer.... Marcel

I'm already on a higher plan that offers 50 Mbps, but I don't get anywhere near that speed, so I'm paying for something I don't get, surely you could see that if you read my previous posts, your answer is reminiscent of a bot at work, it made no sense or relevance to my situation

Yeah step, it's a crappy script for a movie.

Meanwhile things have improved, the connection is steady at an acceptable speed, though I still get vdsl dropouts during the day, it a pain if watching internet TV channels which have improved picture quality now .
