A few reasons Linux is like Black Metal...

#1 Post by AbnorF »

Being a teenager who listens to black metal, follows the furry fandom and uses GNU/Linux isn't easy in a country like Bangladesh; where music is catagorized into the following genres: "Bengali", "Hindi" and "English".
Naturally, when someone asks me what music I listen to, I answer is reduced to mumbling, because I haven't found a way of explaining to my classmates what exactly 'extreme metal' is.
It can get even worser. When somebody asks me if I listen to Bengali music or Hindi, I reply "Neither". Then they exclaim: "So you listen to English songs! Sing us one!"
I pray to 'The Power That Be' that one day I would be able to emulate guitars, drums, synths and vocals with my voice alone.
When it comes to computer, it's another story. 'Windows' is basically the replacement word for 'Operating System'. Even our NCTB text-book about ICT states something like: "In case your computer doesn't work properly, format C: drive and reinstall Windows. If that doesn't work, take it to an expert." Though ironically, the only people customers pay for using Windows is the pirates who put it on disks for sell and the reseller. Irony at it's best, given that unlike other major software products (and black metal albums), Microsoft officially sells their products here (unfortunately only in Dhaka). It also boils my nerves when someone claims: "I'M A COMPUTER GENIUS!!! I CAN WORK IN MICROSOFT WORD AND PLAY WATCH_DOGS!!! Ph0T0Sh0P FOR T3H RULEZZZ!!!"
Being a furry in Bangladesh is like being the high-school joker. Someone discovers your hobby (either you try to explain what is the furry fandom or they rummage through your computer without your permission. Thank the stars I don't have Windows anymore) and spreads word around that you like 'cartoon animals'. Guess how it goes.
Let's cut the ranting short. What I was trying to come with that I have discovered some shocking similiarities between the 'Black Metal' and 'Linux'. It might sound weird, so you should check out my points and determinate it yourself:

1.DA H0RRoR!: When you try explaining to general people what Linux or black metal is, there is a high probablity that they would either think you are stupid, or a mentally unstable nerd or a psychopath who likes to burn churches and sacrifice virgins to the devil. This is even more true in a country like mine; where the average repair shops repair computers by stating that "Thy computer hast gotten the Devil's viruses" then formating the C: drive and re-installing Windows. I'm sure if I ever send my PC to the repair shop (for hardware faults), they will scream their heads off: "Aaaargh! Your PC doesn't have Windows! WTF is this!!!" then erase her HDD and install Windows. Things are getting better though. There is a online community of Banladeshi Linux users and developers are focusing on Android. Still...
2.CAN'T BE MAINSTREAM.EVER.: I have seen many Linux users (including myself) who make fun of Windows and OS X users. I bet if a person or team takes the Linux kernel, builds a 'user-friendly' OS on it and then sells every copy for $100, the Linux community is going to bite their heads off. Black metal fans also seem to hate so-called 'mainstream bands' like Cradle Of Filth and Dimmu Borgir; despite the fact that they aren't black metal anymore. Just because your music have black metal influences doesn't make you black metal or forbid you from trying to make money. Go figure.
3.A divided house: So many people argue which is the best Linux distribution. I'm sure half-of the people doesn't believe in the open-source philosophy, they focus on the practical side. Similarly, metalheads have been fighing over whether Dimmu Borgir is 'kV1t' or sellouts and bashing people for listening to them. (This is one reason I don't follow the black metal community too seriously anymore, because I love both Cradle Of Filth and Dimmu Borgir.) Also, are Drudkh black metal?
4.Instant diseaster, just add (unreasonable) parents: Imagine you have stereotypical Asian parents. Acording to the dice of fate, if you are too busy with your computer, your parent might sneak up behind you (to make sure you aren't watching porn, probably), keep looking and then demand to know what you are doing. Before you can explain properly, they will come up with a list of things you could be doing instead, like 'studying properly so you can get A+ in all subjects and then your parents can brag to everyone' or 'make some money online' (appearently making money online is so easy that people with very little technical skills can do it). When it comes to black metal, either a). You are listening without headphones, your parents will ovehear and keep making fun of you for listening to grabage and insist that you listen to some music that has actual actual singing in it (this is the case if your parents don't really know what is black metal). Or b). You are listening without headphones, your parents will ovehear and become horrified that you are possessed by the devil and need to repent (in case they know exactly what you are listening to). Happy parenting!

Okay guys, this is for now. I had some more points, but can't remember them anymore. I shall leave the rest for yo. Feel free to add points or correct me if I am wrong. Hail Tux!

Also,
I happily announce that I have found a new motto for the open-source community: 'Abrahadabra', meaning "I create as I speak". (This is not a joke. I found about this word as I was researching the Dimmu Brogir album 'Abrahadabra'.)

[This post is not intended to be taken TOO seriously. I actually wanted to start a blog and upload it there, but decided not to, as it would take very long for the blog to become know and for words to spread. Please forgive me if I have offended anyone. Peace.]

Hey AbnorF, I don't listen to black metal nor follow the furry fandom, but I was still fascinated reading your post. Thank you for taking the time to write it!

Great post! :D

Very interesting.
Keep trying to become YOU.
Don't allow yourself to be diverted.
And tell your parents I say that it's their job to help you become YOU by providing the means to do so.

Only when you fully become you will you have fully developed your potential.

Parents and teachers have a tendency to attempt to mould children into THEIR idea of what makes an ideal person.
It's like trying to make a cat bark like a dog...
Or make a fish into a bird.

All creatures just naturally do that of which they are capable.
Birds naturally fly.
Fish naturally swim.

Imagine if the parents of Albert Einstien decided they were going to make him a lawyer.
YIKES!
Perhaps he'd have made a very bad lawyer, due to lack of interest and motivation.
MOTIVATION is all important.
No-one can FORCE you to be interested and motivated.
Self-motivation comes from self-empowerment.

AbnorF, Just to say, 'thanks' that was a good read and really made me chuckle.
Ha! Ha! I can see both sides of this argument - I'm probably older than your parents! Musical tastes are very evolutionary - hardly any parents like their childrens taste in music! I've never heard of - let alone listened to 'black metal' - and, honestly, I don't think I'd really want to! But that's not to stop you enjoying yourself!
'Abrahadabra'. Can also be spelt Abracadabra - a palindrome being read from either end and still being the same word. It was associated with magicians. Another palindrome - which just might enter this conversation and be pertinent:
"Are we not drawn onward, we few, drawn onward to new era?

Use RUFUS or LinuxLiveUSB applications to create a Bootable

#10 Post by WB7ODYFred »

 Thanks for your story Abnorf. I appreciate your sharing of your life and thoughts from Bangladesh.

Have you ever tried the puppy application "MoManager" to create a localization langugage package for your local language to make the Puppy menus and programs more useful to a non english speaking neighbor?
http://wellminded.net63.net/ use this search to find MoManager.

Question: If I say "this puppy linux is the greatest thing since sliced bread", but every else looks funny at me and says but does it run windows software? You say no. they say I am not interested in Linux, then. But you counter it is FREE. They say I am well, I have enough money to support the PC repair and purchase the pirate copies of Windows.

How do you sell or encourage the use of Linux. Is USB flash disk drive easy to obtain to be able to pre-install Puppy Linux and give away or sell away to people you meet? What do you say to get them to try Puppy Linux or Slacko 6.3.0 or Slacko 64bit or
http://www.linuxmint.com

http://puppex.exton.net update Slacko 64bit
http://multibootcd.exton.net/ 6 operating systems to test out on a single flash drive

My little websites:
http://puppylinux-or-pcbsd.blogspot.com/ From MS windows to Linux, 10 minutes, 2 downloads, 1 usb flash drive

http://rufus.akeo.ie Get rufus.exe appication
http://slacko.eezy.xyz Get 32bit or 64 bit Slacko .ISO file

Use rufus.exe to write/burn .ISO Linux file into a USB flash drive and make the drive bootable.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can not make them drink the water.
How much interest in Linux and how much in PuppyLinux in a USB flash drive is there in Bangladesh or neighboring India. Do you ever demo your machine running puppylinux to your friends?

Thanks for your replies here, AbnorF Fred Finster
