Another call for USB tests, this time with "dmesg"

#1 Post by sunburnt »

I called for tests using the "devices" file, & that showed me it wasn't a good way to go.
Zer0 has brought to my attention that there's possably different dmesg reports for different USB devices.

For anyone cares to help, please do the following set of tests for your USB device type:

Run Xterm, type:
dmesg -c

Then plug the USB in & type:
dmesg

Post the output from dmesg along with:
The: Brand, Size, & Type of device, another words:

USB flash drive type & size
USB reader type (apparently the card in or out doesn't matter)
USB HD type & size
USB CD type (do dmesg with drive empty, then dmesg -c, & dmesg again with CD in drive)

The more input I get, the better chance I have of making usb-auto work well.
I'd like to finish this up & post it, as I've worked over the possabilities for awhile now.

The first dmesg (no output) is with the USB stick not plugged in. It's a SanDisk Cruzer Mini 2GB USB flash key (thumb drive), plugged in through a PCMCIA USB2 adapter. It seems odd that it's using ohci_hcd, since the chipset in the adapter is ehci. Speed is definitely USB 2--or at least, it's quite a bit faster than when the stick is plugged into the rear USB 1 port.

Thanks guys... I think I've got an idea of what needs to be done.

I'll use this line to detect the USB device & get the address:

usb-storage: device found at 3

And then it'll check for this line, if it's not there it'll wait for it:

usb-storage: device scan complete

Some USB devices are slow to settle & respond, so this should insure it's ready.
I wish the line: "usb-storage: device scan complete" had the address with it.
Then I'd know which device was ready, incase several USBs were inserted at the same time.
I'll test more on this to see if I can assure that each device is ready before mounting.

I have a PQI 5in1 TravelFlash (5card) reader.
My results are not consistent

If the PQI has been previously plugged in (with or without cards) and then removed it can take as many as 4 prompts of 'dmesg -c' to get a zero response - until that occurs the prompt is followed by several lines starting with the full plugged-in response then diminishing inconsistently to zero lines response - the max# of prompts required so far has been 4.

with the empty card-reader plugged in (on a good run)- I get
~# dmesg -c
~# dmesg

Hi sunburnt - I retested my PQI 5in1 TravelFlash reader & results were same as last time except for complete absense of the 'smb timeouts' (I think they were due to an active LinNeighbourhood connection at the time - sorreee

The over-current warning is consistent - must be a low power usb port - strange because the card reader is extremely reliable - although digital cameras need an ext power supply.

Glad you got the data you needed and good luck in pushing back the forces of darkness :)

fluxit; This is something I hadn't thought of, multi. cards in a reader at the same time.

The line: "sdc: sdc1" is the same as the others.

But the line: " sda: sda1 sda2 sda3 < sda5 sda6 >" is different.

The: "USB Storage-CFC" card has multi. partitions on it?
I'm going to guess here what it is, PLEASE tell me what it ACTUALLY is.

A primary partition, don't know what type.
A secondary extended partition.
A third logical ext2 or ext3 partition (Linux I'm pretty sure).
And 2 more logical partitions of FAT or at least some type of M$ WIN.

The last 2 partitions are in < > so I'm not sure what that's saying.
Win. logical partitions always seem to start at xxx5 & go up from there.
Linux logical partitions seem to start at xxx3 & go up from there.

It appears I'll have to rework usb-auto once again as this brings up entirely new possabilities.

They are: fat16(primary), fat32(primary), extended containing<ext3, fat16>

This is the probepart report for my 160GB HD.

/dev/hda1|vfat|9124857|Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2|none|259305165|Win98 Extended (LBA)
/dev/hda5|vfat|128776977|Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda6|vfat|130528062|Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda3|ext2|44146620|Linux Ext2Fs

If you notice hda1 is primary, hda2 is extended, & hda5 & hda6 are logical, all FAT32.
hda3 is ext2 & was the very last partition made, but it has a lower number than the other logical partitions.

fluxit; I'm curious which partition ended up with which drive designation.
It's not critical, but it might help me identify the partition types better.
I assume that sda1 is a primary & sda2 is the extended partition, what's the rest?

OKAY... Now I'm really curious!

I started doing more tests with my 3 USB drives & this is what dmesg gives:

Insert:
hub.c: new USB device 00:10.0-1, assigned address 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x5dc/0xa400) is not claimed by any active driver.

Remove:
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:10.0-1 address 2

AND THAT'S IT!!!
It seems like there was more info when I tested them about a week or so ago.
The disconnect message here does give the address number.

Maybe there's a difference in the dmesg reports between Puppy1 & Puppy2? (kernels 2.4 & 2.6)

Could some of you tell me what version of Puppy you ran when you did the USB tests?

You can have up to 4 primary partitions so the extended partitions start at hda5. The extended partitions need to use one of the primary partitions, in this case hda2, so hda2 isn't used directly only by way of the extended partitions it contains. hda3 was created last but a primary partition must have been chosen for it to have that number or if it had been extended it would have been hda7.

You don't have the usb-storage module loaded.

Oh yes... and my partitions are enumerated in the order I listed them.
