Hello! Is there anybody who is able to expand the file "boot2pup.img.gz" ?
That file is necessary if you want to prepare a boot floppy for Puppy Linux (http://www.goosee.com/puppy/boot2pup.htm).
I tried to expand that file three times. Twice with Windows 98 SE and two different suitable softwares (7-zip and ICEOWS) obtaining a message saying that such file was not a valid .gz). The third time with Knoppix Linux Live CD obtaining an error message. I wonder why.

I could upload one to you if you want. Probably in .zip format - I don't know if we can up load *.gz flies

Actually, since you have Windows 98 you can boot Puppy from its DOS prompt. I'll put together a kit for you to do this, if you want.

I'd need to know the location of vmlinuz, image.gz and usr_cram.fs (example hda1)

Also the size you want the pup001 file to be.

you can download a zipped version that probably will work ok

I had the same problem. If you downloaded the file with Internet Explorer
it may have been unzipped as it was downloaded but kept the .gz extension. All I did to get it to work properly was to open up the dos promp and rename the file without the extension. After that it worked well.

Sorry all How easily we forget. Here I am still in the early stages of learning DOS and I forget to list the steps properly for those who have had less time at the promp than me.

Heres what I did

<Start> <Programs> <MS Dos promp>

C:\windows> What the screen reads Then type

E: <and press enter> To change to the drive where I saved
the file. Yours could be C, D, etc

dir <press enter> This will show a list of the directories (folders)
for those who have never ventured out of
Windows at the root of this drive. If there is too
much information to fit on the screen type

dir /W /P This will display the information in a wide format
one screen full at a time.

cd "name of directory you want to move to" <enter>

dir <enter> To check that the file you want is in that
or dir /W /P if needed directory

continue to cd untill you reach the directory you need

ren boot2pup.tar.gz boot2pup.exe To rename the file.

exit <enter> To close DOS

Now double click on the file and it should start.
