This is the best Linux forum I have visited

#1 Post by poorguy »

Hey All,

I just thought I would post about Linux Forums I have visited.

To start with I have been a Linux user for a little over 1 year.
Started with Ubuntu 14.04 and still use it. I have also used the different spins from Ubuntu.
All seem to have their particular advantages.

I was introduced to Puppy Linux 4 months ago and have been impressed by it's advantages and versatility.

Along my journey with Linux I have encountered various problems and have visited the different forums for help.
I have had satisfactory results from all of the forums for the most part.

When I have had questions or problems with Puppy and visited the Puppy forums the help that I receive is awesome.
The caliber of help from members of the Puppy team is unapproachable when compared to other Linux forums I have requested help from.
The knowledge and willingness to help until the problem is solved is amazing.
It is not surprising at all why Puppy is the distro that it is.

Just want to say THANKS.

The PoorGuy

Agreed.

Keep faith in the developers.
They will create a new version of Puppy or make additions to the existing Puppy.

We're trying! We're trying! Thanks for the vote of confidence, poorguy.

Indeed this is one of the best Linux forums around. I'd say its only problem is that the
search function is old (look at the version of this board at the bottom of this page...).
It does not always find what you want.

So I use the major engines, say ask.com or yahoo.com. I type the term I'm looking for
and I narrow it down to the Puppy forum, like in this example:
(I owe this trick to French forum member Argolance.)

For older posts, member bigpup did a fantastic-o, tremendous-o, extraordinary-o, etc., :)
job of indexing all the threads. You can find his general index here.

bigpup has also provided us with "theme" indexes, here.

No end of thanks to bigpup! :)

I use a simpler version of the same trick: I just add "murga" as one of the keywords for the search. Works great.

Be nice if there was some way to limit a search to a single thread.

Hey, backi!

Does this fit the bill?

Source.

And I'm not even a practicing Christian... My dad named me "Christian" because
he didn't want me to found another religion. It would still be "Christian-ity", you see.
(I don't know why Flash keeps hiding the tongue-in-cheek icon from us...) :D

With apologies to all practicing "Christians"! ;) No offense intended.

Well, with Google you can add "murga" WITH THE QUOTES, and ditto for the thread title in quotes. That seems to limit things to the correct thread. But as I recall when you asked about this elsewhere in the forum, you also wanted to limit to just the POSTS by a particular member. I don't know how to arrange that. I CAN (sort of) limit to just PAGES where that guy/gal has posted (as opposed to merely having his/her name mentioned in somebody else's post). I add the "joined" date for that member in quotes. Not foolproof, but close!

Many thanks, 6502coder.

@all:
That trick should be in bold, underlined and huge characters, in plain sight on the Puppy wikka.

:D Hello,
This forum is, without a doubt, instrumental in making Puppy what it is today.
No condescending attitudes, no RTFM, just friendly people.
An absolutely free environment to learn and experience Linux.
And, a version of Linux that allows you to absolutely destroy it and reboot it to where it was in about 2 minutes.
Copy your save file and do whatever you want to it!!!
Most of puppy is implemented through configurable scripts that execute the compiled binaries. Which means you are free to edit an improve / destroy at your will.
If you are diligent you can use nearly anything from any version of Linux you want.
With very little effort, the little rescue, old computer, low spec distro
can become the most state-of-the-art Linux system on the planet.
The latest kernel, the latest glibc, whatever..
From a tiny embedded system to a full-blown media recording editing powerhouse, Puppy can be whatever you want.
Close the Windows, and open your eyes, to a whole new world

Couldn't agree more, puppyluvr. Puppy is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best darn distro I've ever used in nearly 40 years of tinkering with these here 'black magic boxes'.....

And I've tried just about everything during that time. (Not Gentoo, though; even I'm not THAT much of a masochist..!)

Mike.
