What's going on in the forum software one wonders?

It appears this post was sent twice, several minutes apart.

Yet this was during the 18 minutes that it was not possible to access the forum, between my post to MU and mine to Rhino which tried to follow about 2 minutes later.

I have deleted the second duplicate post and substituted this one instead drawing attention to the error messages that come up quite arbitrarily.

Looking at the number of people accessing the forum, I can't see any valid reason for it shutting down because of high bandwidth.

Most odd. It also did it to Lobster, so it's not "just me".

:)

I am glad I waited for this beta before running
Really good job Rhino.
Hope my comments are constructive ;)

I am using puppypro as an update to 2.10
it seems well behaved - my old icons (which I personally find clearer, simpler and easier to differentiate
- be interested what others think) are on screen
with the new ones in ROX looking good.

I was able to see the new icon set by runing Puppy from
memory. The buttons for printing and java setup was a good idea. Maybe one for webcams as the webcam wizard is being updated by Nickbiker . . .

Menu layout is clean and much clearer
Will XDG be too hard to implement?
If so what you have done is excellent.

Liked the Sun timer - not sure about the periodic table
Gimpshop as default - not sure
a new Mtpaint should be out soon?
Improved games for business - LOL
I don't play games but this is a good selection.

icons on JWM menubar much clearer
themes on seamonkey, nice looking
I tend to use the default as it is faster

Office integration seems fine
seemed to 'just work'

I am all for having xfce as default
as it is simple and elegant

If there is an option to view text
and the various command lines
"p for pause", being the first part of the "puppy pfix=ram" etc
is possible

I am finding that the backgrounds
when you view them are high res
all other options (to actually use them)
are low res - am using 1024 x 1280
Seems a good selection
(few of mine in there . . .) :)

Like Pizzasgood comments about tux :)

Have sent Barry a PM about using PuppyPro as a name
- OK he is on holiday but was online yesterday
will be back Sunday after his well deserved change of scenery.

Be very interested how others get on.

Everything seems to be going well in this beta ;)

After looking at XFCE4 again, I was able to clear up a couple of the problems I had previously struggled with and it seems to be better than ever! I will include XFCE4 for the next version. Since I included just the Java installer I should have space. XFCE4 does look very nice and clean so it should be a great fit. I will still leave JWM as the default, but will include a menu entry to switch between JWM and XFCE4.

Pizzasgood is working on such a thingy, we talked about it at length in another thread and PM. Sounds like it might be what you are looking for.

I believe the concept would make it truly professional from the visual point; however it needs to be able to offer for selection whatever is available in pup_save files without having to be enabled to so do, perhaps?

AFAIK he is incorporating a similar one for shutdown as well.

We should wait and see, I guess Very Happy
Boot and shutdown, and I have an alpha-ish release up (it's been tested so little I'd put it at pre-alpha, though it runs great on my end. It's really the installer I worry about). I've been working on this between classes, work, and the neccessities of nature, so progress isn't especially fast. This weekend I plan to run some test on the fbcon module stuff, which when finished will remove the last major problem with it (invisible console text).

It won't have an option to switch between text and graphics, but it will save the messages in a textfile. Someday I'll be able to add fancier abilities, but that's way off in the distance for now.

For the record, I haven't used or even really paid much attention to this project (not enough time), but I've been keeping it in the corner of my eye and it sounds pretty cool. When I get the splash finished I'd be glad to help install it in this, or at least give detailed instructions, as time permits

Great stuff, thanks :)

Have you considered the possibility of fvwm95 as well? It does make for a nearer "look" to MS Windows than jwm - which it appears was its original intention, to look as like its menuing system as possible.

I wonder if fvwm95 has the ability to include quick start buttons on the taskbar.

Just a thought, anyway.

Richard

Even though I feel fvwm95 is very stable - it has had its day
(is still a pupget so is available to Puppypro users)

The only Puppy person I am aware of still using it is Gleizl . . .

:)
VERY glad to hear xfce will make it - IMHO the best, easiest and most pleasant Linux window manager by far. It has been adopted very fast by many distros because it is so good.

JWM is a good default as it is more generic (windows like)

Geek note: I think jwm is 150k with UPX
Xfce is 1000k (is that right)
HOWEVER xfce does many things that jwm needs extra programs for
I wonder what the final tally is (I have a feeling JWM would still easily win)

Also . . . can someone remember . . . there is a dotpup that improves the look of JWM taskbar that was released recently. Are you using that rhino?

Can we get a browser icon in there too?

yes, subject to a point you make further down about polishing it up.

The disappointment with jwm for me is that it appears to only allow a two tier menu, a three tier would be more useful imho.

I've read somewhere that is the case
Lobster wrote:Also . . . can someone remember . . . there is a dotpup that improves the look of JWM taskbar that was released recently. Are you using that rhino?

That dotpup would be good to have, but I'm wallowing in the dotpups that have been moved and the links remain broken, which is frustrating to say the least as I'm not competant to either create them myself or add them manually. So if there is somewhere I can get that from to try it I would greatly appreciate it too.

Also searched for a character map in the forums as Sun JDS2 has it and I use it a lot there and in Windows, but there wasn't really any joy in the seven threads the search found for me.

A browser icon would definitely be useful.

The icons that business folk would be used to, which are on a basic Windows desktop, just installed:

My Computer which is drives and Control Panel.
My Documents.
Local Network (which is LinNeighbourhood).
Recycle Bin.
Browser.
Email.
and maybe a few custom ones from locally installed applications.

These are what most Linux distros aimed at this market have, though some have quite a few more.

Many are installed to the left and right hand ends of the taskbar also, like in Windows up to and including 2000.

In XP the icons in the right hand end of the taskbar are a mess, because they vanish like the default menu did on Me and 2000 and XP.

Takes too long to find hidden icons imho. Suspect Vista will be no different.

XP does not appear to have left hand end ones, but I don't run XP and I'm going on memory here.

I'm working (said this before) on a variant of the jwm menu that could help make windows migrants feel more at home. Nowhere near ready to post anything, though.

Thanks for your reply :)

Richard,

FVWM95 is nice, but I'm not sure that it would provide any extra functionality over JWM and XFCE4. I would agree that it is highly customiazable though and it is easy enough to install with a dotpup if necessary.

I can certainly add a browser icon to the JWM tray...consider it done. I think that will be a nice touch.

As far as adding the icons for MyDocuments and LinNeighborhood, that is a bit of a sticky mess. Although I can add them, I'm not sure that /root/My-Documents is the best place to store personal files since it is in RAM (IMHO it is better to save them to sda or hda), but it is a very personal preference that can be remedied by dragging your personal save folder in Rox to the desktop.

For LinNeighborhood, the same is true, it would be easier to drag the network folder to your desktop from /usr/mnt once you get the network connection setup.

Although the task of dragging ROX folders to the desktop couldn't be simpler, I doubt many new Puppy users would intuitively try to do it.

Thanks for the help, and keep the feedback coming :-)

I might try that on a backup pup_save file and see how badly I butcher it :D

On a pup_save annotated as a "work in progress" I tried a number of things like that with great success. It is really a very versatile beastie, isn't it?

That's a thought. I did drag the LinNeighbourhood executable with some success. Will try your suggestion when I get set up again for "dabbling".

But it IS so easy :D

I have squashed a couple of bugs I noticed such as GimpShop not recognizing jpegs  but that is now fixed. I succesfully added in XFCE4 with a menu entry to switch cleanly between JWM and XFCE4. I kept the icon theme consistent between the two and made sure the order of icons in the tray for each is the same, so there is a consistency between the two. I still have the ROX pinboard for the desktop although I imagine you could manually turn on xfdesktop if you would like. I did have to slide all of the icons down just a bit to make room for the XFCEpanel. I did not include XDG menus in XFCE4 yet, but the JWM menu shows up perfectly and I made a refresh menu entry for when you install new applications they will show up in your menu. The right-click in XFCE4 just brings up a personal menu including ROX-filer. If time allows, I may put a few "commonly used" entries in there for the major apps. I have to admit that I really like having the option and themability of XFCE4 available...it simply provides some polish and feels more complete and modern.

As Lobster had suggested, I am cleaning up some of the backgrounds so they will show up better at high resolutions and eliminating a few to save some space.

I did add a tray button in JWM and XFCE4 for the browser.

I also made a desktop setup icon (like the Java and Cups) for webcams using NickBikers script, but it will need testing since I don't have a webcam.

For the record...
I did not remove any of the advanced applications from Puppy such as Grubconf amd Gparted, I just uncommented them from the menu so a new user would not damage their system with them by "playing around". Although there is ample warning in each against do so. If you would like them back on your menu simply edit .jwmrc.
A couple of questions...
I know that gtkam allows some people better access to their cameras. Is it possible for someone to complile the gtkam plugin for the Gimpshop in PuppyPro, or do we already have one?

Does anyone have a fix for the XVESA boot from LiveCD problem where the screen shows up extremely low res with a reddish tint? Please let me know if there is a fix.

Just posting an update on the current state of things. I will release an ison including all of this fairly soon.

Thanks to everyone for all of the feedback!

Slightly off topic, but Barry wrote this in one of those links...
I was also going to do some improvements for PCMCIA, targetting this for 2.12 also.
JWM is currently version 1.7. Version 1.8rc1 has some important fixes, such as making the mouse less sensitive, but it has a bug with Gxine so I'm waiting on at least v1.8rc2 before upgrading.
You might be interested to know that the PCMCIA slots in a 1995 Twinhead laptop running P1-266-MMX supports my ethernet connection without blinking an eyelid, detected it on start-up with 2.02 and 2.10, using a Belkin card with a dongle on a short cord.

I was trying to fix a problem on it for a friend and took the opportunity to boot it from the CDs, nice and fast too :)

Couldn't find another post about Barry's update where I could mention this.

What I was after was the sort of GUI application that puts up a window where the user can search for, then select, inspect, and finally use the character they need - that isn't available with a button-push on the keyboard layout they have chosen to use.

Yes it's my prefered window manager for puppy. When the released of Puppy 1.0.4 with fvwm95 as the default, I fell in love with it at first sight :-D

Can we try EDE v1.1 or could someone create a dotpup for it? I see SaxonOS is using it. Very cool! :-)

To quote from Jaberwock I might jump up and down and say wierd things like
"Oh Frabjuous joy, halloo, hallay..." :D
Or even a quote from Professor Higgins in "My Fair Lady"...
"By George, I think she (he)'s got it!"
Got what?

Actually the ability to expand the JWM menu structure beyound two levels, to mimic the Windows one.

I went round in circles with poor syntax of my own dumb doing.

I went to Joe's website and between what he posted me, and what I modified this evening, I have come up with the following, which was the first stage...
Image

You may notice that I've created two menu items out of the Shut Down - because that is standard in MS Windows. Makes sense to their users, so I guess they would expect it here.

A bit more coding and I came up with the following...
Image

So, I'll go quiet for a few days while I work on this revamped menu - some might call it "dumbed down" but really it's just something the migrants from MS Windows would likely find less of an integration curve with.

Here it is in the context of a look-alike desktop - in which the icons will probably need some changes - it's not a difficult job to redo the menu layout, but extremely time-consuming.

The background is also called "bliss" like the Microsoft one. This one is actually the FreeBSD one.

Image

Barry's excellent wizards will come in extremely handy here as menu links in a number of places.

Now I would like to create a Control Panel dialogue, but I suppose a Rox directory would do the job quite well. That is, after all, what the Windows Control Panel is anyway.

What are thoughts here?
