Toward fully working Google Earth (version 7.1.4.1529)

#1 Post by Keisha »

I no longer use Puppy/Quirky/DebianDog except for maintenance tasks, but I perceive from a quick look around the Forum that Google Earth has been somewhat of a problem lately.

In Fedora-23-x86_64, the current stable version-7 64-bit .rpm works except it does not provide Panoramio views. There is a version-6 Google Earth available which does provide Panoramio views but whose Startup Tips don't work.

Today I have succeeded in getting 32-bit Google Earth version 7 to work in Fedora 23-x86_64 using the Gentoo procedure described here:
https://fitzcarraldoblog.wordpress.com/ ... io-photos/
although it did take some Google'ing to find some of the dependencies, since Utopic is no longer the current Ubuntu version.

(also see amirpli's post at
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=490066#c9)

By starting from version 7.1.4.1529, the current 32-bit official stable .rpm package as of April 13, 2016, it works. The Tour Guide, Startup Tips, and Panoramio views all work, fonting is good, flying is good, and it is stable.

The four Qt4 libraries provided in the google earth .rpm were deleted and their i686 Fedora counterpart versions were installed using Fedora's yumex-dnf package manager. With the addition of Fitzcarraldo's added version-specific libraries from the Gentoo procedure cited above, including his 32-bit adaptation of amirpli's shim library baifaao.so (compiled from baifaao.cpp with Fitzcarraldo's gcc commandline), and by using Mr Wolf's plugins subdirectory in its entirety (see second post below)...it's all good.

I just thought I'd report this here, so that developers struggling with current versions of Google Earth in Puppy and derivatives might benefit from this experience.

Correct plugins folder for 32-bit Google Earth 7

#3 Post by Keisha »

Oops, correction: the correct 32-bit plugins folder is not from amirpli's 64-bit package cited above but rather is from the 32-bit adjusted google-earth-stable-7.1.2.2041-0.i386.rpm supplied by Mr Wolf at http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpost. ... stcount=42.
