Quirky Xerus 7.90 (8.0beta)

#16 Post by ETP »

Hi Barry & thanks for your latest beta.

For an initial quick test I installed the 8GB image to a USB3 stick.

Background info:
  • Window Manager: JWM vgit-976
    Desktop Start: xwin jwm

    Kernel: Linux 4.4.7 (x86_64)
    X.Org X Server 1.18.3

    Bash: 4.3.0
    Geany: 1.24.1
    Gtkdialog: 0.8.4
    Perl: 5.22.1
    Python: 2.7.11+
    Yad: 0.27.0
    busybox: 1.24.1
    dhcpcd: 6.6.2
    Glibc: 2.23
OpenSSL: 1.0.2g 1 Mar 2016, built on: reproducible build, date unspecified
    wpa_supplicant: 2.4
The initial boot was problem free with working audio & ethernet via DHCP.
Having increased the DPI to 102 I found that the JWM Configuration Manager/Tray management could not be
used to change the Tray Height from 28 and had to alter it manually. That did work in Werewolf.

Another issue is the following errors in the xerrs.log - font cache update issue???

I tried to install the 32gb image to 2 different flash drives that
claim to be 32gb but they wouldn't boot.
I installed the 16gb image to one of the 32gb flash drive and it
works, made the remainder of the drive ext4 to store files on.

No devx pet yet?

Testing on an Intel P4 w/5GB RAM. Minor issues in this post; some of which you may have already addressed.

Downloaded and installed using dd v8.21. I downloaded your 4GB upload and installed to an 8GB stick. This was done to insure the 4GB image would install to larger stick and boot without issues. Before the 4GB image was installed to the stick, all contents were erased from the stick. Thus the install process was started on a MSDOS partition-table stick with NO partitions defined. After installation, the stick looks like this in GParted:
Image

Request
When this message surfaces in GParted for viewing the stick, What do you advise community members to do? Should they "fix" or should they "ignore"?
ImageImage

Booted with no issues to desktop. Time to desktop was about 1.5 minutes. I filled FirstRUN as follows:Image

Open JWM manager to configure minor changes. Got an error on one of JWM's feature shown as follows:Image

On another of JWM issue, although this being old problem, it does NOT reflect the current taskbar Window status reporting 1x1 when it should show OOTB status of 1x3. 1x1 shown as follows against the desktop's backdrop:
Image

Next, free command was reviewed to get a RAM use gauge. Each of the following shows report.

Code: Select all

# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 4823992 256384 4567608 5476 232 175236
-/+ buffers/cache: 80916 4743076
Swap: 4235672 0 4235672
Taken immediately following FirstRUN
Later:

Code: Select all

# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 4823992 259860 4564132 5720 232 177140
-/+ buffers/cache: 82488 4741504
Swap: 4235672 0 4235672
Taken after errors in JWM taskbar changes
SAMBA was started for all of the shares that the HDD provides for LAN users. "smbclient" utility is available and working now:

Code: Select all

# smbclient -V
Version 4.3.6-Ubuntu
# samba -V
Version 4.3.6-Ubuntu
Mount command in Xerus works for accessing remote shares from LAN, as well:

Code: Select all

# mount //myNAS21/ISO-downloads /mnt/NAS21/Downloads
Password for root@//myNAS21/ISO-downloads:
#
I am also able to access this Xerus PC's shares from other LAN devices.

All seems to be operating without crashes, thus far. Using SeaMonkey to report these from the Xerus desktop.

@BarryK, might you consider @01Micko's LAN taskbar facility where a mouse-over shows the current IP of this PC?

Any additional specifics you would want, request them and I will attempt testing.

  • On a subsequent reboot, the system required a manual restart for the wired adapter to join the network.
  • I have found that some extensions do not have default apps; namely ".xz", "png", etc.

you beat me to it.
Did we forget to say 'please'?! Sorry.
Almost every other distro still uses .iso for distribution. The arguments have been well rehearsed. Developers can, of course, pursue whatever strategy they choose, but my guess is that a CD .iso is preferred by the majority, UEFI/secure boot/w.h.y.? .img formats would be imperative for ARM 7, 8, mobiles, etc. devices but Pi s, Arduino s and such tend to be aimed at different audiences and applications. Both formats would satisfy everyone, though.

I agree with you, we need an iso :) (or a vmlinuz and a initrd.gz, to do a frugal install). Please.

More testing:

On the issue of the (Unable to update the static FcBlanks:) errors the fontconfig.log shows:-

Code: Select all

fc-cache: error while loading shared libraries: libfontconfig.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libfontconfig.so.1 is a symlink to:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libfontconfig.so.1.9.0 (size 273832)

It would appear that the content of that lib is the problem. Increasing its permissions did not help.
/usr/bin/fc-cache is not showing any missing dependencies.

thank you a lot for the great work you're doing!

I'm trying quirky xerus 7.90 from a 16gb usb key on my asus e200ha.

Unfortunately, the touchpad doesn't work (it did with ubuntu 16.04 beta).

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thank you very much in advance!
I have an E200HA also!

I thought that the touchpad was working. Hmmm, maybe I changed something that broke it. I have been recompiling the kernel many times, trying different config options.
I will investigate.
My touchpad on E200HA works.

However the Flsynclient GUI doesn't. Something seems to have changed in how xorg works.

The strange thing is, fc-cache actually works:

# fc-cache --verbose

...and it reports success.

Thank you for your reply!

Unfortunately, I still can't get the touchpad on my asus e200ha to work.

I am booting without passing kernel parameters, should I use any?

The output of cat /proc/bus/input/devices doesn't contain any touchpad entry. Maybe different e200ha are equipped with different touchpads, mine not being recognized by the kernel? Any suggestion would be very appreciated!

Thank you very much!

The USB stick will boot on BIOS computers, that is, all pre-2012 Pcs.
Requires 64-bit CPU though.

Did you know you can do this from an iso file too ?

Code: Select all

Maybe you can add these important libraries :
- libpng16.so.16 (needed by 0ad , urbanterror , libreoffice etc.)
- libSDL_mixer-1.2 (needed by sauerbraten etc.)

I hope "update-mime-database" will be added for firefox and seamonkey to work ok.

noticed in werewolf : init should be in /sbin and not in /bin . lsmod is in /bin and /sbin , but should be in /sbin only.

windows programs to burn linux .iso file into usb flash driv

I tried registering at http://barryk.org/news/?do=register but I don't receive email to set password. Therefor I post here, to comment on Windows USB FLash writer.

Check out Windows single file Rufus.exe http://rufus.akeo.ie I have used rufus.exe many times and recommend it to new users coming from windows to test drive puppylinux.

or Look at http://www.linuxliveusb.com LiLi to create a bootable USB Flash drive from many different Linux distributions including puppylinux.

My own blog post that describes creating a PuppyLinux bootable USB flash drive. http://puppylinux-or-pcbsd.blogspot.com ... ux-or.html

Search for USB and author wb7odyfred on http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy or search with http://wellminded.net63.net

Can this post be Stickied for beginning users? When I started from Windows to create a working version of PuppyLinux in a USB Flash drive. this would have been helpful.
