I hope you can make sense of the following snapshots. The main thing
seems to be that the boot process cannot find /sbin/init, which provokes
a kernel panic.

Hi Musher,

If you're frugal booting (using the limited savefile Barry incorporates), your grub4dos has (you cannot deviate) to look like this (my frugal folder is called "Quirky-Xerus":

Code: Select all

title Quirky-Xerus (sda#)
kernel /Quirky-Xerus/vmlinuz install_specs=UUID=(find your UUID using blkid in terminal):ext4:Quirky-Xerus
  initrd /Quirky-Xerus/initrd.q
Do this, and Quirky will boot right away "frugally" with a limited savefile ready to go (savefile will go straight into the folder you created for frugally booting quirky).

This is, since Precise 5.7, the most stable OS Barry has put out, imho. I am really liking it here. :)

Quirky Xerus 8.1.94 for x86_64, released July 13, 2017

The proprietary Nvidia driver installed without problems.
I like the icons but the background wasn't my cup of tea :)

@belham2
Thanks for the tip. It worked. Proof is attached!

It's well done, as always with BK, but "je reste sur ma faim", il leaves
me still hungry.

I understand that a lot has changed on the inside, but on the surface, it
feels to me as "same old, same old."

For one thing, I miss the capacity for a real "pupsave" or similar.

For another, it took so long to power off that I had to push the reset
button.

For a third, neither the mtpaint capture script nor the screeny script are
the best for what they are supposed to do.

For a fourth, a lot of icon space could be saved on the desktop if icons
were grouped in category sub-menus. One icon for LibreOffice instead of
four should be obvious. In the same line of thought, the mnt icon top left
first line is really superfluous, since we have a string of partition icons at
the bottom that do exactly the same thing.

I did appreciate the zram compaction though,

As the saying goes in classical contemporary music, every composer is
free to be at the same time consistent and inconsistent with his logical
premises. (For a source of that quote, try I. Stravinsky or Th. Adorno, I
can't remember ATM.)

Meaning: you can present Xine as the best multi-media app AND not offer
SFR's Take-a-Shot in the same distro! ;) It's a composer's -- or a
developer's -- prerogative!

As I mentioned before, I respect Mr. Kauler's work, he is a trail-blazer in
so many ways. But for the reason mentioned above, I'm not doing him
any salamaleks.

So, mixed feelings about this QuirkyXerus-8.1.94 on this side of the
Ottawa River, Mixed, but still respectful!

BFN.

Hi Musher,

Glad you got it booted. I am not sure what your missing with the way the current savefile operation is setup? I've completely modded much stuff now, been pushing it past it limits, and the savefile function with a frugal install has still worked like a champ. Perhaps you'd be interested in rufwoof's thoughts & comments on this when he was first fleshing it out for Barry in earlier Quirkies. Quite interesting reading. But, alas, I guess to each his own and there must be something you're desperately missing.

As far as TAS, it was one of the first things I installed. Took all of 30 secs.

As far as the icons, I hear ya. But they take so little space, that I don't mind it at all. What is important was the little changes under-the-hood, so to speak, in this Quirky compared to the last few iterations (both Slacko and Xenial).

Oh well, ce la vie. Me thinks this Quirky edition is a "keeper".

A quick response, coz I have to head into town.

If you boot the live-CD, there are two icons on the desktop.

Click the "install" icon and you can install anywhere you want, including a frugal.

This is how I tested over last couple of days, it worked for me.

Thanks, Mr.Kauler, but belham2 suggested a good tip and I was able to
get to desktop.

I rebooted to Quirky Xerus just now, and all my customizations (the ones
that can be seen in the screen cap above) were gone.

I am very disappointed. When was the last time overwriting the user's
customizations happened? Puppy-4.31, Puppy-4.70? I can't remember
exactly, but I'm not going through that again, sorry.

How can I say this without seeming harsh? I need a distro, preferably
Puppy-like, which does not require me to edit the developer's choices for
desktop and perhaps interface before I can start to do my own work on
say, aewm, wmx or other small WM, or some music or history or
calendar scripts, etc.

Obviously, Quirky Xerus 8.1.94 is not for me.

Submitted with respect.

Best regards.

Always grateful for crumbs from the master's table, but...
-
I, for one, would be interested in a 32-bit build.
yes, of course!
Maybe remind us of the size of Puppy 1, wasn't it around 16-20Mb?!
Not entirely happy to lose the original purpose of a slick, slim minimalist offering with the unique touches of a maestro. The ever burgeoning bloat reminds one of another OS, in particular. Furthermore, no need to pander to the clamorous demands for more facilities, pre-installed applications, gizmos & suchlike, including sometimes from YT, esp. if a comprehensive PPM is offered.
The clever stuff is functionality over the widest range of HW, notably 32bit machines which outnumber all others in RoW by a large margin. This is where our Great Leader excels. And, indubitably, a Quirky for RPi, which is where the present focus resides...

Hello belham2, Mr. Kauler and all.

I reinstalled from DVD as suggested by BK, I followed the steps. It took
an "eternity", since everything went through mksquashfs instead of a
plain copy.

I changed the lines in menu.lst as suggested by BK. And rebooted.

But now I can't get xorgwizard to suggest the ATI driver, which was the
default the 1st time, and the modesetting driver won't give me any
numbers, for the monitor cycles, etc.

One other thing that I noticed is that I couldn't change my keyboard layout
to the qc keyboard. The intermediate steps for 105-keys international
keyboard, and choice of layout went ok, but the final saving gave me an
error, the changes were not registered. So I was stuck with the US default
keyboard, which is a pain, since I'm not used to it.

I hope that these disparate notes will help Mr.Kauler refine his distro. As
for me, enough testing, I'm heading back home to my DPupStretch7-fr! :)

Quirky Xerus 8.1.94 for x86_64, released July 13, 2017

#429 Post by mfb »

I am booting from a DVD-RW which takes less than one minute from power-on. Saving all changes to my hard drive using the desktop "save" button takes only a few seconds.

I found the main menu colours attractive, but I found the text hard to read and so changed its colour to yellow.

It seems the Flash updater itself needs updating.

Personally, I like to be able to update to any latest version of SeaMonkey via SeaMonkey's "Help"; so, sometime, I'll fix that by installing a different version of SeaMonkey.

I'm delighted with my first couple of hours of testing, so I thoroughly recommend others with 64 bit machines to try Quirky Xerus-64- 8.1.94.

Get flash install flash from the menu doesn't work! (dialog box says check your Internet connection). There is- prospecting channel.com where html does not view videos and flash is necessary.

Installed the 1.8 flash update (from Godfrey) that installs flash however, it completely locks-up seamonkey browser... uninstalling 1.8 flash update still leaves seamonkey in limbo, reboot necessary to regain seamonkey.

The Xorg Wizard, the script "xorgwizard" that you run after exiting from X, is partly broken.

This is because the script runs "Xorg -configure" to do some probing, but that no longer works. It has been deprecated for a long time.

I have written a big chunk of code to replace "Xorg -configure", and xorgwizard now works, at least on my desktop PC.

See blog post:
http://barryk.org/news/?viewDetailed=00594

Note to everyone, do not use the xorgwizard in 8.1.94!
The next release will have the fix.

Is this a frugal installation that you are running?

Whatever installation, power off takes just a few seconds. So, I don't know why you have reported it to be slow.

What is wrong with the two screen snapshot apps? I use them regularly, can't see anything wrong with them.

I didn't even know about Take-a-shot. So much happens on the Puppy Forum, and I tend to focus on just a few threads, sometimes gazing elsewhere.

Anyway, have followed it up, downloaded, and will look at it. It looks good.

Quirky has get-flash 1.5-4b, created by shinobar. I just checked, shinobar has a later one, 1.5-6, I will test that:

Thanks for the feedback.

I didn't need to run xorgwizard so that wasn't a problem.

Oh, I'm sure I had a frugal install, there was an "s.sfs" in the QuirkyXerus
directory. Looking back, I think I forgot to hit the Save icon before
powering down. Puppy habits die hard! :)

When you click the "save" icon, there is a checkbox to bring up the save-window at every shutdown.

I didn't make that the default, as some people want to have the default of not saving anything.

I have done a bit of a writeup on the philosophical differences between Quirky and Puppy:

http://barryk.org/news/?viewDetailed=00595

I rather like that idea of moving user-installed packages into q.sfs, if you decide that you want to keep that package permanently.
