usb full installs on my laptop
They work for 3 or 4 reboots then I get lots of messages on booting.
I guess once they start displaying messages, the error has already occured so they probably dont mean much.
Then it just stops and hangs.
https://ibb.co/izdLUk
https://ibb.co/e7PG25
https://ibb.co/iqZc9k

On rebooting I get the ramdisk message.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 019#961019

Ive tried fsck and restoring a snapshot but on reboot still the ramdisk screen.

With a usb frugal install after the messages and hang, on rebooting the install is still ok and working

Ive still got easy 0.2 on a flash drive and that always boots up ok.

Ive just tried Xerus on another laptop and it boots reliably.

Out of topic : about motherboards, I found a good one with :
- DDR3
- max ram capacity 32 Gb
- max speed 2400 MHz (can have Dual channel)
- PCI express 3.0
- SATA 3
- USB 3.0
----> ASRock FM2A68M-DG3+ (50 US dollars)
(receives processors AMD FM2 and FM2+)
NOTE : it has no HDMI, only DVI !

Quirky does a filesystem check, from ramdisk, if this file exists:
/.fsckme.flg

When the check takes place, that file gets deleted, so it shouldn't happen at next bootup, unless you hard coded "qfix=fsck" into syslinux.cfg, then it would be stuck doing a fsck at every bootup.

Normally, that /.fsckme.flg would only exist if there is an abnormal shutdown, as a normal shutdown, it gets deleted in /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown

Geoffreys version does seem to write it correctly.

OK, I have upgraded the MSCW PET with Geoffrey's script, see blog post:

Thanks for the feedback. I have fixed both of those.

I dont think it gets written to /etc/asound.state or that doesnt get saved.
You are right!

Sound state gets saved at shutdown, when /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown calls "/etc/init.d/10alsa stop"
Need to also save sound state when save a session.

Fixed, in script /usr/sbin/savesession

/.fsckme.flg does exist
sdb2,ext4,

So I pressed F2 on booting
typed quirky qfix=fsck
Not sure what I should see but all it seems to do is create a ramdisk.
And the file is still there on reboot.
https://ibb.co/k6M2QQ

If I delete /.fsckme.flg manually then the stick boots up ok.

My Easy usb drive has started doing it now.
I shall have to give my laptop a thorough memory test, just in case thats causing it.

Ref your 2013 post after doing some digging,

as "fixed: pEqualizer (added caps_eq-0.4.8 and alsaequal-0.6)"
could you elaborate on this in full please to resolve my post
query above, on missing dependency in pEqualizer.

Thanks in advance.
There is a bug in pequalizer.
/usr/local/pequalizer/pequalizer has this:

#depends on alsaequal
if [ ! -f /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_equal.so ]; then
echo "Missing dependencies"
exit
fi

However, that shared lib is at:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/alsa-lib/libasound_module_ctl_equal.so

I fixed that, then run /usr/local/pequalizer/pequalizer in a terminal:

Code: Select all

Failed to load plugin "/usr/lib/ladspa/caps.so": /usr/lib/ladspa/caps.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

That caps.so is in this deb:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/caps

which I installed, but then got another error:

Code: Select all

# /usr/local/pequalizer/pequalizer
Unable to find label "Eq" in plugin library file "/usr/lib/ladspa/caps.so".
Fixed. Pequalizer needs two debs: caps and libasound2-lpugin-equal.

The latter is actually package 'alsaequal'. Quirky had a alsaequal PET package, which does not work.

So, I will fix the pequalizer PET and have the correct libs in the next release.

OK, new pEqualizer PET created, version 1.0.1, see blog post:

Quirky Xerus 8.2 for x86_64, released July 19, 2017

I couldn't get pburn to burn an iso file to a blank DVD, it failed twice and spoiled 2 blank DVDs.
I installed xfburn with QPM and it worked fine.

Is anyone experiencing problems with pMusic?

Actually, for me, Xine-UI is fine as a music player, and I don't really need pMusic.

Booted up ISO OK. Seemed fine from quick check. Decided to save a remastered boot DVD. (that is the boot straight into the file settings saved on my Hard Disk)
I don't think it burnt but it may have put a grub file on one of my HD.

... when I booted up the message in the enclosed image came up and I was stuck ...
Hi lobster, good that you still come to the Puppy Forum sometimes!

I don't know what that image means. Does the PC still bootup with the original CD, and find the saved session?
Oh I am still here occasionally just not active. I recently got a Pi3 to drive myself mad ... 8)

That message in image seems to be maybe a grub boot message that Quirky has created?

So have not yet got either the boot location CD or original Quirky to boot from the save file. I have been able to boot from Slacko ... by ensuring the CD is the default boot media - that did not work for the two Quirky disks but it did work for Antergros Linux live.

What I may try later is disabling all HD disks as boot options and try again . . .

Quirky has pBurn 4.3.16, the latest.

I just now tested it. Burnt Quirky 8.2 iso to a dvd+r, it worked.
Verified OK also.

Note, I ran "pburn" from a terminal, to see if any error messages got spitted out, but it was OK.

Re: Intel graphics chipset

#569 Post by BarryK »

lp-dolittle wrote:Thank you Barry very much for Quirky Xerus64 8.2 final!

unfortunately, Intel graphics chipsets on some laptops (e.g. Dell Latitude 6500) seem to cause similar problems as I was faced with when I tried to permanently set up Swiss German keyboard layout using Easy Linux 0.2 pre-alpha (see post from May 20th 2017 in the Easy Linux thread).

Not only the setting itself proves to be 'quirky', but every finally successful configuration is spontaneously reset to the US layout after a restart of X, even if previously saved!
Loading of the intel-gpu-tools pet did not help.

On a Dell Vostro 1730 (NVIDIA VGA controller) the keyboard layout setting works fine

how to amend this issue?
Yes, I have read your previous posts about problems with Swiss German keyboard layout. I haven't responded so far, as didn't know what to do about it. Still don't.

4 hours difference when setting alarms with pschedule (or pclock)

Note that the date --utc command gives the correct value for UTC time.
Everything is fine except for crond

- 2 folders are not needed anymore :
/usr/share/midi-icons #symlink
/usr/share/mini-icons #symlink
Nah, will keep them.
- another typo found : audio is missing in /etc/gshadow
solution is to add this line "audio:::root,spot,fido" in /etc/gshadow
OK, fixed.
- in .jwmrc-tray , there are some obsolete entries : blinkydelayed, xtmix, asapmshell...
OK, fixed, but only in the templates folder in woofQ. This means it is fixed when using jwm package from a host-distro, however not for a jwm PET.

In the case of a jwm PET, the fix will have to wait until I upgrade the PET. Which should be sometime soon, as want to upgrade jwm version, currently using a very old version.
It will be a lot of work, as all of the jwm theme pets will need to be fixed. Which is why I have put off upgrading jwm.

OK some progress ...

I disabled all UEFI BIOS boot options which Quirky did not like. Both Slacko and Antergros Linux did not mind them . . .

Have managed to boot into the original Quirky 8.2 WITH the save options enabled

I do not think the boot to HD directory remaster was written to but that may be a hardware issue around speed of the DVD drive that was also happening in Slacko . . .

To Barry ref your fix for pEqualizer

#575 Post by Rodney Byne »

To Barry,

have made progress with your pEqualizer fix.

The fader applet now launches, but as you said there
is a problem locating the link to amixer, as shown after
copy/pasting from lxterminal output:

# pequalizer
amixer: Unable to find simple control '01. 31 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '02. 63 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '03. 125 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '04. 250 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '05. 500 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '06. 1 kHz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '07. 2 kHz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '08. 4 kHz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '09. 8 kHz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '10. 16 kHz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '01. 31 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '02. 63 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '03. 125 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '04. 250 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '05. 500 Hz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '06. 1 kHz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '07. 2 kHz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '08. 4 kHz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '09. 8 kHz',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control '10. 16 kHz',0

cp: omitting directory '/root/.pequalizer/preset/'

The preset above shows no file or directory present
when any attempt to restore the fader positions
for Flat only.
All faders immediately drop to the bottom when
f for flat is typed.

So far so good, but a bit more work is needed to
create the missing directory.

Best regards.
