Xenialpup CE 7.5 / 25 Nov 2017
Tahrpup kept stuck to 6.0.
Version jump to seven Tahrpup kept stuck to 6.0.
I will try Xenialpup, of course. I hope the quality as good than Tharpup.
"i've stuck with the 3.14 kernel for the moment as the 4.* versions" is that really important ? Don't worry, we shall wait as long as needed. Perhaps newbies not even should have remarked the kernel version..
"that it has both qt4 and qt5 libs" ah, that is the main progress, don't delete anything, that is the reason why xenial will bring us a plus.
New applications will be available in the menu ! if not, i shall explore and advise what to add in this xenial,
263MBs downloading 'for amusement, only' and new pleasures. ..

I think there is a sort of stigma with 4.x (Hurr, Durr Im'a Sheep) kernels for many because something worked before but didn't after, though in my cases this was usually because of missing drivers in the kernel build rather than a problem with the version itself. I remember reading according to Linus that they just switched from 3.x to 4.x because the 3.x number was getting too high and it wasn't really a "milestone" difference though (maybe 3.14 -> 3.18 and 3.18 -> 4.0 was about the same amount).Pelo wrote:"i've stuck with the 3.14 kernel for the moment as the 4.* versions" is that really important ? Downloaded and made CD, boots fine, wifi works, freq scaling tool not working well (like in Tahrpup 6.0.(0,2,5).
Used universal installer to put on USB stick, would make to a ext 4, gave "need ExtLinux version 4 for frugal install on ext 4'. Took over 30 minutes to convert 32GB stick to ext3 from ext4., then everything locked up and had to hard boot. Fired up on slacko 5.7 (my 'base' puppy), 9 minutes to ext3 to ext 4 and back to ext3. Re-partitioned stick to 3 parts, 1 is ext 2, 2 is ext 3 and 3 is ext 4.
Back to Xenial CD, Universal installer ok with ext2 and ext3, same message with ext4. made sd2 (ext3) boot and 'folder' save file. Booted to Black screen, bricked, Booted from CD with USB plugged in, found savefile, booted to black screen, bricked.
Not working well with this machine:
Toshiba Satellite C55t-A
Intel Celeron CPU N2820 @2.13GHz , 2.13GHz
4.00 GB Ram
All Intel
This is somewhat normal for this machine, when I first got it, I spent a week trying every puppy I had (4.11 to 5.28, had to update the Bios so I could boot CSM, etc.)
downloaded a few more and made cds, only slacko 5.7.0 PAE (kernel is different than the one in the No-PAE) worked out of the box.
Tahr pup tried to work, just didn't do well. Vivid 6.5 works fine, as does slacko 6.3 and slacko64 6.3, Peppermint 6 works fine (will even boot uefi, s'boot off)
I'll keep checking back
Tom

Been testing for a few days and its looking very promising
Had a few weird minor things going on during desktop setup but they all seemed to be corrected once I made a save file.
One oddity.
The cpu temp tray icon which I've never had working in any Puppy previously loads up at boot and then vanishes around 30 seconds later.
Cheers Phil. You're doing a great job for Puppy once again

Have you considered focuswriter? haven't tested it much but it's very lightweight and capable, and it appears to be reliable.666philb wrote:Xenialpup nearly BETA

anyway, here's a mirror, 666philb:
xenialpup
CUPS - no Admin
G'day 666philb,
After a whole "5 mins" of running a Frugal Xenial, a couple of things.
CUPS - 'fires up' as you said back on p1, but fails for me at the next step - when trying to add a printer via the Admin page (see screenshot)
Having more partitions than sense , I can have issues displaying the drive icons across the bottom of my monitor with overlaps making clicking tricky on many Pups (not just xenial).
Fiddling with the Icons set-up (your 'Icon manager' or in /etc/eventmanager), I can re-space them out a bit from the startup but only the second row (my sdb series) while the sda set remains unchanged. Also the sorting is not quite numerical. (See screenshot again)
I guess this is a Woof problem but thought I'd mention it as there may be an easy fix from someone knowing what he's doing .

@David: I cannot replicate your problem. Try a clean setup with no installed packages.
@Phil: There are indeed numerous missing files. I have pulled them out of Tahrpup605 and assembled them in a PET here.
1. /etc/cups/snmp.conf is needed to detect network printers. It also needs a CUPS restart.
2. /usr/share/cups is missing a bunch of stuff. The most crucial file is mime.convs.
3. The CUPS filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops is broken. The version from Tahrpup works.
4. The SANE config file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf is missing.
I have run a full suite of print/scan tests and everything now works.
However, I cannot get dir2pet to work with xz compression.
BTW, I have posted a new PeasyScan v2.9 here.
[Edit] PeasyPort needs an upgrade to v2.1 and YASSM needs an upgrade to v2.9.

rcrsn51:
I was trying earlier today to activate my canon printer/scanner, with no success.
Installed your cups patch.pet and the other printer pets you recommended.
Having already installed your candi.pet and the canon driver.debs both printer and scanner are working well.
Would have no chance of doing any of this without your help.
Thanks as always.

Excellent. Now that you have all the Canon Debian packages downloaded, you should use candi-pet-maker to build your own print/scan driver PET. Read here.

I got it to work in Slacko 6.3.0.6, but it wasn't easy (example pet of the spot dir):rcrsn51 wrote:However, I cannot get dir2pet to work with xz compression.
cd /root
mkdir -p new/spot_xz/root
mkdir -p new/spot_gz
cp -r spot new/spot_xz/root
cp -r new/spot_xz/root new/spot_gz
cd new
dir2pet spot_xz -x -s -w="spot gets xzed"
dir2pet spot_gz -g -s -w="spot gets gzed"
mv *.pet ..
cd ..
rm -rf new
ls *.pet -l
Not sure if root permissions need to be changed first. But if typing "which xz" shows nothing in Xenial, dir2pet won't work.
