Both 7.0.3 and 7.0.1 work well here on my 10 year old Dell towers.
Tahrpup also works quite well. I get the feeling of "mature" pups and
Linux itself, though it's disappointing that you (Phil) had to drop down
in kernel #.

I gauge maturity simplistically. I no longer run into snags getting
video and sound. Printer/scanners now have a good chance of working.
My old Linksys PCI wireless adapter no longer requires a work-around
for a bug somewhere (apparently in kernels since Ubuntu and others
also had the bug). My Microsoft LX300 usb headset works. So I'm a
happy camper nowdays, especially with Xenial and Tahrpup Smile Like so
many have said, thanks so much for your efforts!

version 7.0.7 dowloading.. Linux 4.6.3
Dotmund Smile i like.
Tahr in multiboot is tahrbang. I now include a Puppy Precise in my multiboots because FFmpeg included; Puppy 4 are for remember how light and fast were puppies of the past.
I changed my mind : version 7.0.3 is garbled, desktop frozen

Version 64 bits replaces 7.0.3 in my multiboot pendrive. Ah everything working first try. Smile Unless further usage . But first start , nothing bad.
What is appreciated compared with some different puppy-builds
Ready for use for home usage, Palemoon does not need to be replaced. The ISO size is the size user will load in RAM. Wireless connection is easy. PPM has new applications, to renew the passenger menu. Desktop is nice.
Of course, screenshot is no longer valid, 7.0.7 is the version running.
PPM tested by dowloading Midori 0.5.11 (only for test, palemoon is enough). Package and dependencies installed without trouble. Midori 0.5.11 always has trollitos around the windows when sending a message, that is an information for Midori testers..

Testing Xenialpup CE 7.0.3

The current script in /root/Startup/pmcputemprun seems broken (dangling fi).
Code:
#!/bin/sh
killall pmcputemp
sleep 5
exec /usr/bin/pmcputemp
fi

Also, if the user switches to a panel other than JWM, the temperature utility still loads even when not requested by the alternate panel.

To load pmcputemp only in JWM, the script could look something like this:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
if [ "`pidof jwm`" ]; then
 killall pmcputemp
 sleep 5
 exec /usr/bin/pmcputemp
fi

TahrPup has a menu option Menu/Setup/quickpet tahr which includes the ability to upgrade video drivers. My HP15 laptop uses an AMD graphics system and works properly with the AMD driver.

Will there be a quickpet menu for Xenial?

PostPosted: Fri 19 Aug 2016, 11:12    Post subject: 3G Modem

Hi all,

Thought I would give 7.0.3 a go, had lots of problems with 7.0.1.
After initial problems with set up boxes not being correctly displayed or titled I got 7.0.3 set up and installed on a USB dongle.
However I am unable to get my Huawei E1750 USB modem to work.
I tried both inserting the dongle after boot up and on boot up, both failed.
The indicator light on the dongle does flash bright blue indicating it has been recognised. But going through the normal set up routine, after pressing the Probe icon, no modem is found.
Looking in the messages log there are a load of ACPI warnings.
One quite interesting stating;" A4 warning fotg210_hcd should always be loaded before uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd, not after"
And more pertinent to 3G modems: " daemon_err_kernel:udev[23358] failed to execute '/etc/udev/mtp-probe' '/etc/udev/mtp-probe /sys/devices/pci1000:' "
There is no /etc/udev/mtp-probe file.

Hope this is of some use.

I am posting this from tahrpup, on my Lenovo U310 laptop.

Initial test - Xenialpup CE 7.0.3 32-bit K 4.1.30 on 64-bit i5 with 4GB Ram

Hi 666philb,

Manual frugal install to fat32/f2fs USB-3 stick with Syslinux 4.04 boot.
Initial boot to desktop with working ethernet & sound.
Additional firmware had to be installed to get Bluetooth & WiFi working (See screenshot)

I was unable to get sensors working in Hardinfo despite loading additional kernel modules
and lm-sensors.

This Pup is subjectively very fast and gave a blowfish score of 2.89 which is the best I have ever seen.
Pale Moon was updated to 26.4.0 and seems much improved. In particular the Firefox add-on
"Complete YouTube Saver 5.6.70" works well once it has been pointed at /usr/bin/ffmpeg

Notes on Pets:

Billtoo reported that Kodi 15.2 failed to launch. I also saw that but it is due to a bug in the Ubuntu version
that was introduced on or around 3rd August. The fix is to create a file with the following content:

Code:
# This is /etc/profile.d/kodi        ETP 21st August 2016
# Fix to launch Kodi
export KODI_HOME=/usr/share/kodi/

FbBox-4.0 works well but in common with WoofQ Pups needs some minor changes to dbus operation if correctly working
dbus is required by any apps. With the default JWM there are no issues with dbus.

Hi,

I'm having a lot of trouble running qt applications, anyone else having this problem?

Getting a lot of errors like "error while loading shared libraries: libQtGui.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" and segfaults.

Manual frugal install of Xenial Pup 64 7.0.7 running well on this test laptop, like the many other major pups I've tested on this machine.

Just a couple feedback comments since this is not yet released?

I like the new desktop and icon look. Looks kind of retro like pup431, except that it's more modern and fully functional. Didn't care much for the Tahr pup look and similar looking round icons. This is much better.

And again, this is just for the defaults, what a new user install would see. I realize these can be changed: (same issues exist in Tahr)

Default terminal is sized at 70 columns wide. Most linux distros have default terminals at the standard 80 columns, and I don't really see any reason for intentionally shrinking it to 70, makes many command outputs look odd, so maybe an oversight? Actually, in the 64 bit version, it is 68 columns and to fix it to 80 columns I have to set it for 82. Strange. Also the "~" window identifier gets kind of buried in the tray.

For Rox filer, I prefer the standard default icon size of all the other pups, instead of the small icons used in Xenial and Tahr. I usually either work with those larger icons or the detailed view. The small size is strange to work with, for me. Others may have different opinion, just giving my feedback/vote. And yes, I know this can be changed, but its just one more thing to change from default.

And lastly, I like the name change back to the Puppy and Quirky standard format. Don't know if this is an official thing or just random, but it makes sense for Puppy/Quirky to follow the Ubuntu format:
Adjective Noun
Trusty(adj) Tahr(noun)
Puppy/Quirky modifies but keeps same format:
Precise(adj) Puppy(noun)
Quirky(adj) Xerus(noun)
I always thought Tahr Pup should have been called Trusty Pup instead, but again that's just me seeing the Adj-Noun format as logical and consistent.

Note: Frugal installs.

Having trouble remastering on 703. I'm trying to do a full (inclusive)
remaster. When I do this manually, I copy all of pup_ro2 and
pup_rw. The result is a broken pup having no sound and no wireless
capability. I get the same bad result using the remaster tool on 703.

The manual method works fine on Slacko 6.3.2 (and on various earlier
pups).

Anyone else experiencing remastering problems?

@artsown: Is this with a savefile created or on first boot? That sounds like a bad idea. Copying pup_ro2 into pup_rw? Heh. Or maybe it isn't. It would be nice if you could do mksquashfs pup_ro2 pup_rw puppy.sfs but I think it only lets you do one at a time? I tried appending pup_rw into puppy.sfs (which was very fast) and it didn't seem to add anything when I rebooted. The adrv way seems easier (ie. copy pup_rw to /root/new then do mksquashfs new adrv_puppy_#.sfs then copy adrv to /mnt/sda/puppy).

Sailor, here's the procedure that works on other pups:

echo "Please wait. Copying files from original squash file ..."
mkdir -p /mnt/sda3/work
cp -a /initrd/pup_ro2/* /mnt/sda3/work
echo "Merging files from personal Save file ..."
cp -a /initrd/pup_rw/* /mnt/sda3/work
echo "Creating remaster ..."
mkdir -p /mnt/sda3/remaster
cd /mnt/sda3
mksquashfs work remaster/puppy.sfs -noappend
echo "Finished! Remastered file puppy.sfs is in /mnt/sda3/remaster"

Why doesn't it work on xenial pup?
