Slacko and Slacko64 700 BETA 2

This is 32 bit and 64 bit version of Slacko built on top of the recently released binaries of Slackware(64)-14.2.

It is also using the very latest woof-ce experimental 'rationalise' branch.

DOWNLOADS

Changes
  • 6.9.6.4
    - bugfixed scroll wheel (ty jlist)
    - touchscreen right click - hold with one finger and tap with a second finger
    - new 'xfwm touch' theme + minor UI improvement thanks to zigbert
    - bugfixed removal of some redundant slackware init scripts
    6.9.6.3
    - touch support
    - new updates manager
    - new xorgwizard
    - lots of bugfixes
    6.9.6.1
    - new themes somewhat similar to the ones here.
    - new kernels: slacko64 4.1.32 : slacko 3.14.78
    - latest woof as of this morning (10 hours ago)
    - all iwlwifi firmware *should* be there
    - fdrv, which is only small, contains b43 and b43legacy firmwares (thanks to gyro, I cherry picked them from the sfs)
    - new wallpaper arrangement so icon and text is closer to centre
    - uses slackware util-linux (so encrypted saves wont work - but that is work in progress)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FEATURES
  • Touch screen support!!!
  • revised updates manager
  • *NEW* UEFI USB installer (only supports vfat for now - support for ext{2,3,4}, f2fs and possibly NTFS is on the drawing board)
  • latest experimental woof with improvements to the init script from gyro as well as significant contributions to sfs_load plus many more 'under the hood' enhancements. Also new xorgwizard from jlist
  • new initrd statically compiled programs from jlist (aka wdlkmpx). These can actually be reproduced as part of the woof process.
  • numerous library and application upgrades from upstream including Firefox 45 ESR (latest in 6.9.6.3), CUPS-2.1.5, GParted and many more (see the Slackware changelog)
  • Many updates locally, including, but not limited to, htop, samba, pMusic (and friends form zigbert), peasy* apps (from rcrsn51), PupMates (from radky) and many more
  • Almost all apps have been recompiled against the Slackware64-14.2 toolchain for maximum stability
  • latest 4.1x LTS kernel compiled natively
  • UEFI boot capability is built in to the ISO image - turn off secure boot and fast boot first if running windows>=8.0
KNOWN ISSUES
  • B43 and B43 legacy firmware is not included. I'm looking for a way to better integrate this in woof. EDIT: now in fdrv on the ISO
  • there is an SVG bug when using embedded images to do with glib/gtk - reported to upstream NOTE: as of 11/09/16 gtk+-2 is updated for a CVE. Dunno yet if it fixes the SVG bug (doesn't)
  • firmware is huge accounting for the size of the ISO image. Probably 30M of this could be trimmed, but I'll only do this on the i686 (32 bit) version
  • xsane is partially broken - sometimes works but of course that isn't good enough EDIT: looks like my scanner is flakey as reports are xsane is working
  • 32 bit misses pure-ftpd so that is broken - fixed
  • 32 has less firmware
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please whack this hard with sfs loading and various pupmodes (USB installs, save to CD/DVD installs and fulls if you dare). Qemu is in the package manager if you prefer to test that way.. don't forget to load the right KVM module for your processor!. (BTW, qemu was broken, now fixed in 32 and 64)

Enjoy!

Decided to do a quick manual frugal install on sdb1. No boot.

Threw up some Ext4 errors and then couldn't find the slacko64 sfs on sdb9.

Supposed to be looking in (hd1,0) so something is incorrect.

Just installed the new Xenial on the same partition, boots fine.

Live cd now,all basics working ootb.

EDIT:

The Ext4 errors were sdb7,sdb8 and sdb9 which are now occupied by AntiX, Trisquel and Devuan all working fine.
Don't know why it was looking in the Devuan partition for the Slacko64 sfs.

Booted the cd again, default boot. Interestingly, didn't detect any of the 3 slacko64 savefolders on that sdb1 partition.

Anyway, deleted the existing frugal install and used the installer to do a frugal install. Still no boot. Different error messages but can't find the sfs.

Manually changed the kernel and zdrv, still no boot.

No time for additional hacking tonight. :)

I wonder if it's because slacko64 uses util-linux-2.21.2 but lvm2-2.02.154 expects 2.23? (wild guess)
/sbin/lvm
/sbin/lvm: /usr/lib64/libblkid.so.1: version `BLKID_2.23' not found (required by /sbin/lvm)
libblkid.so.1 (BLKID_2.23) => not found
I haven't checked what version Xenialpup uses yet though.

Guess I changed my mind.

Changed back to the original kernel and zdrv.

Pulled the initrd from Slacko64 6.3.0, did the quick stuff to get it detecting for 6.9.5, deleted the 6.9.5 initrd and switched to the old initrd and success . Boots and posting from the fresh frugal install now.

Thanks James.. as said valuable feedback.. :) . We are bound to have issues with a rewritten init script so that's why I released this - to cast a broader net.
I wrote:There will be plenty of bugs in this.. it's a double alpha :!: - slacko and woof. As always all tests and feedback are appreciated.

Getting old means presbyopia and smaller resolution is needed. This slacko is the first one for long time that I was able to change resolution to the lower spectrum, meaning that I was able to read with my glasses what I saw in the desktop. Now with 1366x768 and I am able to test this slacko !
Wireless works, Pmusic works, listening to some Australian station while writing. The great feature of Pmusic is that you can restart X without losing your station. Benefits of aplay I believe. In terminal: syndaemon -i 1 -K -d helps also when writing this. The jumping cursor stops jumping.

I had some difficulties when I tried to move tray to the below. At last I just edited the appropriate config file. I didnt understand the gui app, but my skills are rusty I believe. Now the tray is below and I feel like home. Some Stardust theming applied and here it goes, looks homely. There are some problems with Geany or with fonts overall. After some editing my fonts seem to lack portions, and Geany is slow to load config files. I would post some screenshots but too lazy atm.
Overall. As early alpha, this slacko version is already usable and promising new puppy. Thanks Micko !

PS. I am using old fat32 formatted usb stick, so problems I noticed might be because of my used media. So dont take too seriously my report.

I will try to work on this Slacko and report as I find bugs/solutions. Looks overall stable.

- dir2pet does now set gzip compression as default instead of xz. What is the thoughts behind this. Do you want me to pack stuff for Slacko 7 with gzip compression?

- much slower internet connection with my usb dongle in 7 than in the previous releases. Driver is rt2800usb

- wine is not in the repo. I find this a bit strange for a large distro like Slackware. Am I missing something?

- I've been testing upgrade / fresh install of pMusic 5.2.0 in Slacko 7. Will upload to Woof when ready.

Thank you for pushing Puppy further.

I am sure there was more talk on this, but I couldn't find it.

Someone used this method on about 5 different pups.

I only replied because I see Mr pemasu is on deck...ha! ha!

Cheers....Chris.

Is there a tool available to setup dual monitors?

It automatically recognises both monitors, like Fatdog which is great, but I need to be able to flip them. Shouldn't there be something in desktop tools like zarfy? Ah just remembered I think it has xrandr. I will check when I get home. I didn't notice in the menu though.

Cheers

Out of the woods for this one :-P
Tried to boot it from USB as described here and here.
Both cases the init failed to find the puppy files.
Maybe the arguments are different now (maybe @gyro can advise) or set ups other than “frugal in a partition/folder

I haven't downloaded this new slacko yet, I've done my testing using a special version of peebee's LxPupSc.

All my testing has been done non-uefi.
I've sucessfully booted from hd and usbhd and simulated cd uisng isobooter.
I always boot using grub4dos from a fat32 partition with my frugal puppies and data on an ext4 partition.

I've successufully used a savefolder, savefile, and savepartition (actually by accident).

The new init is not a clone of the old init.
The old init searchs all over the place by default, the new init does some searching, only if it can't be avoided.
It's designed to take full advantage of boot parameters to tell it where stuff is.

It's basic algorithm is to establish where the puppy...sfs is, and expect everything else to be there, unless otherwise specified.

Recommendtion
Specify the following boot parameters:
1. pmedia = atahd.....etc
2. pupsfs(pdev1 is an alias) = name, label or uuid of the partition containing the puppy..sfs
3. psubdir = /path/of/furgal/install
4. psave = name, label or uuid of partition to contain the save folder. If it's not the same as pupsfs.

If you want to have something on atahd and something on usbhd then specify pmedia=atahd

The "flash" part of pmedia simply adds 1 to the pupmode for "hd".

It does include support for multi session cd/dvd, but not yet tested.

Unfortunately reverting to the curent init, means also reverting sfs_load. The new ones both assume that the init only processes system sfs files, and sfs_load only processes extra sfs files.

It's definitely still a work in progress.

@James C,
I don't understand why it works for some but not for you, I will try to replicate.

Ok, this test is not using this slacko, but the init scripts should be identical.

I did a manual frugal install on a usb hd, sdc1 fat32, sdc2 ext4.
Ran "Grub4dos boot loader config" on sdc.
Booted sdc. Successful boot to desktop.

This is the entry in menu.lst created by grub4dos:

Code: Select all

title Puppy LxPupSc 16.08.992 (sdc2/lxpup)
  uuid 7d78f855-bc32-4c1d-9d06-5bc6c7a9e01c
  kernel /lxpup/vmlinuz psubdir=lxpup pmedia=atahd pfix=fsck
  initrd /lxpup/initrd.gz
I later improved the kernel line to this:

Code: Select all

kernel /lxpup/vmlinuz pupsfs=7d78f855-bc32 psubdir=lxpup pmedia=atahd pfix=fsckp
The only probelm I had was was on first reboot, it thought that it was upgrading from version "".
I think this is a "DISTRO_SPECS" presence issue. I'll look into it.

As soon as I manage to download this slacko I'll do this test again.
