Puppy 528 personal storage gauge

#1 Post by Moose On The Loose »

I am running a full install of 528.
That gauge thing just to the left of the time in the bottom row is what I am referring to.

Does anyone know what the program that does it is called? I could take a swing at fixing it if I knew.

The problem is that what more that 1T of free space on the install partition, the gauge shows only 3 digits of G "123G" rather than "1123G" and turns red saying I am running out of space.

Im using precise 5.7.1
Often I will add a program and the thing will go into red and telling me I am running out of space so I delete a bit but it then does not notice and keeps pestering me . Doesn't go away until I reboot

Just in case you get to fixing it.

freememapplet_tray (which name in itself may be misleading depending in which pupmode you are running). It's reporting is BS anyway. I for instance run totally in RAM yet it reports available "personal storage" Also - I have 2GB RAM of which 1.3GB is amost always available, yet this thing reports "personal storage" of 1.0GB (this is set) and then counts the usage/availability down from that figure. It's rubbish.

I suppose that whoever made the program did it for the original way of using Puppy: boot from CD with a Save file on hard disk. Later, the program must have been hacked to make it work, more or less, for all the other ways to use Puppy that have developed.

Yes, this is a nice visual whose intent is much needed, though, its accuracy has always been a concern. I've always wondered if a mouse-over would provide important info of the visual display.

If it is re-developed/improved, please be sure to post the WOOFCE group for inclusion in all PUPs developed.

Lupu 528 is an old version of Puppy.
This may already have been fixed in newer Puppies.

I think the file you want to look at is:
usr/bin/freememapplet_tray
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

I'm currently running tahr 602.
My machine has 3GB of RAM installed.
There is a swap partition of 4GB.
The freememapplet_tray shows 3.5GB of personal storage with 3.4GB free of it.

"you only wanted to work your Puppies in German", "you are a separatist in that you want Germany to secede from Europe" (musher0)

No, but I gave my old drum kit away for free to a music store collecting instruments for refugees!

Precise 5.7.1 has it in /~/Startup/ but I could not find the code file.

I may or may not fix it if I ever find it.
I have a find running right now looking for "*_tray"
If I do something I short of a full fix I will note it here.

I also discovered that the disk icons in the lower part of the screen don't get their information updated if you resize the disk

If you are not using the latest version of Lucid Puppy. You may just be dealing with something that has already been fixed in a newer version.
The final release bug fixed version of Lucid Puppy was V5.2.8-005.

The latest Updated version of Lucid Puppy is V5.2.8.7

I suggest you update to one of these, before trying to fix something that may no longer need fixing.

It's inaccurate in ALL the puppies I have used that includes Wary, Precise and Tahr. I run totally in RAM, why does it report a starting "personal storage capacity" of 1,0GB when I have 2GB RAM installed...and then it reports the available free storage calculated down from 1,0GB. The worrying thing is that the system will freeze when the reported 1,0GB goes down to zero when in fact I still have at least 300MB RAM free at all times. Why is it not picking up ALL of my RAM?

Probably because it's showing the space available in the tmpfs that is mounted as your save layer.
