My 2 cents.

Based on a standard icon set face_wink svg I made once.

Code: Select all

<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="124" height="96">
<g stroke="#000" stroke-width="3">
<path d="M79 76h17M79 61h17m-6-16c-8 2-15 9-11 16-4 4-4 10 0 15M25 42c-5 0-9 1-11 6m17-10l23 9m0 0l-24-4m34 14c27 4 16-43-6-33M48 6C-8 7-8 89 48 90c15 0 25-6 31-14-4 10 7 14 17 14 22 0 24-18 21-35-3-21 7-49-6-49-15 0-15 23-8 38-7 0-7 0-13 1C89 18 69 6 48 6z" fill="#fc0"/>
<path d="M61 47c0 4 6 4 6 0s-6-4-6 0zM75 65c-14 0-41 1-54-8 0 9 5 19 15 19z" fill="#fff"/>
<path d="M22 65l13 4" fill="none"/>
</g>

A few years ago I put together a system of putting svg icons on buttons.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=88715

While doing so I had to collect as many freeware svg icons as possible.
If you look through the package you might see something that interests you.

Puppus Dogfellow's "vehicule" reminds me of something out of "Whacky Races" so I just had to give it some smoke and motion. :lol:

the vehicle's an upright recumbent sled (or i'd have to inflate its tires.

no apologies needed, Pete--that's awesome. i was going to give it rounded tires and a rationalization, but i guess it conveys easy or penelope motion...(thing also starred Penelope Pitstop and Dick Dastardly, no?).

other version was a wheeled/'wheeled" lay-z boy recliner/zero gravity chair that started out as a motorcycle.

@musher0, it can still be electric--it's just got a flatulent dog atop it--that's why he's got the mona lisa grin.

(francophones can verify or not--ca plane is slang for it glides, as in i cruise easily through life?)

I had so much trouble compiling seamonkey with musl. Did eventually get there, but seamonkey was partly broken.

Which has turned me off musl somewhat.

Right now I'm investigating Yocto/OpenEmbedded, which uses glibc.

The reason that I have been mysterious so far about what Easy Linux will actually consist of, is because I have a few basic choices to make, and I have been undecided.

One choice is a distro completely compiled from source using musl, which is a light-weight alternative to glibc, the Gnu C library.
I worked on that quite intensely for a couple of months, but have reluctantly concluded that musl is too much of a hassle.

Then there are other tools to compile completely from source, such as Yocto, and I was intrigued that Yocto supports x86_64 x32, which creates very small and fast executables (I have written about x32 in my blog).

Then there is something else, that has been in the back of my mind for sometime. Instead of creating a Linux distro, just create a .deb package to convert an existing Debian or Ubuntu installation into a Puppy-like user interface.

I think that someone else did work on this idea awhile back. It rings a bell, but can't recall who or when.

This idea of Easy Linux just being a .deb package, has received a kick upward in my short-list, now top contender.
Reason is, I have just ordered a Nexus 5, to enable me to install MaruOS. I have written about MaruOS:
http://barryk.org/news/?viewDetailed=00363
http://barryk.org/news/?viewDetailed=00369

This is a very quick way to get Debian running on the phone, and all the details of sharing Android functionality have been worked out (such as Internet access).
Then, I install my easy.deb and voila, a new Puppy-like distro running on the phone.

Well, it would work the same way on a desktop installation of Debian, just install the easy.deb.

Seems like a very interesting path to go down!

It certainly does sound very interesting BarryK, it would be fantastic to have a Puppy-like distro on a phone.

Note to Barry k

James Bond was able to install fatdog linux on a Nexus7 that he was given as a gift by a donor. He used Multirom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=2011403
It also works on a Nexus5

Here are James Bond's notes
Nexus7 platform notes

Nexus7 support requires you to install Multirom.
A step-by-step guide to install Multirom on plain vanilla un-rooted Nexus7 is available here.
http://www.lightofdawn.org/wiki/wiki.cg ... iromNexus7

To install FatdogArm on Nexus7, you need to:

Download the n7.mrom package and install it using Multirom installer, as follows:
Upload n7.mrom to your device (adb push or other means).
Boot to recovery
Select "Advanced", then select "Install an mrom
Then select n7.mrom from the location where you uploaded it.
Wait, then reboot when done.
Then put a copy of fd-arm.sfs into your /sdcard/ directory (you can use popular file managers like ES Explorer or you can just use adb push).

Only internal installation has been tested. You can have hybrid installation: have n7.mrom installed internally, but have the fd-arm.sfs in a USB drive. In this case, fd-arm.sfs must be put under the path named /media/0. If you want to attempt external instalation to a USB flash drive, make sure the partition that contains FatdogArm is formatted as a Linux partition (ext2/3/4).

Rotation is possible but it must be done by editing (either manually or programmatically) /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-gpudriver.conf, as xrandr is not supported by the framebuffer driver. And then Xorg will have to be restarted for it to take effect. On-the-fly rotation is possible with accelerated xorg driver (see below) but unfortunately at this time the driver has its own problems.

Hardware accelerated drivers are available in the repository (accelerated xorg driver with GPU, and video playback), but they are not recommended for general use. The accelerated video driver is known to cause display corruptions, and the video playback acceleration (which comes as a gstreamer-0.10 library) is not tested.

Camera, accelerometer, GPS, magnetometer, and compass are not usable at this time (and probably never will unless someone contributes patches to Ubuntu Nexus7 kernel).

Comments from an artistically-challenged observer:

I like the thumbs-up motif. Although I am mindful that the thumb gesture conveys a completely different meaning within some cultures (even bringing an official warning to pilots to avoid its use in some regions as a signal of compliance when your Jumbo gets intercepted by tetchy local fighters!), I don't see that as a game-stopper .... after all, it may be interpreted within such cultures quite appropriately as a riposte to dominant commercial OS producers.

My favourite so far is Pete's version 2, where the psychologically eye-friendly circle-in-circle is the better preserved without superimposed text. That said, I prefer Pete's v3 text orientation ('easy' not rotated).

I am just a bit uncomfortable with the squashing-down of the uppercase L (assuming this is not actually intended as some deep "Unux" double-entendre).

This is about as simplified as I could get it down to - 369b SVG (change the height/width parameters as needed)

Code: Select all

<svg version="1.0" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="400" height="400" viewBox="0 0 16 16">
	<path stroke="#99F" fill="#FD8" d="m10 13a1 1 0 1 0 0 2h3a1 1 0 1 0 0-2h1a1 1 0 1 0 0-2a1 1 0 1 0 0-2a1 1 0 1 0 0-2a2 3 0 1 0-3-3v3h3-4a1 1 0 0 0 0 2h4-4a1 1 0 0 0 0 2h4-4a1 1 0 0 0 0 2h4-4m1-9a6 6 0 1 0-1 9m-2-6a1 1 0 1 1 1 0m-5 0a1 1 0 1 1 1 0m-2 3q3 2 6 1"/>
