I am surprised.
Booted into Lubuntu and tried to delete that file.
Same msg !

Code: Select all

vineet@vinpc:/$ rm pupswap.swp
rm: remove write-protected regular file 'pupswap.swp'? y
rm: cannot remove 'pupswap.swp': Permission denied
But it says here "write-protected regular file 'pupswap.swp'"
Also tried to change permissions by rgt-clk the file in PCManFM -- properties -- permissions -- change it to 'Anyone'. But permission denied for that.
EDIT:-
Just occurred to me that I may need to use sudo.
Tried the command with sudo and the file got deleted. So far so good. Let me boot back into puppy.

Another observation.
In Lubuntu, I had 2 GB swap.
Now it is showing 0.
That means the swapfile I had deleted was belonging to Lubuntu.

Good.

I was typing using sudo in Lubuntu when I saw you posted.

Puppy is always run as root so sudo is not needed.

If Lubuntu was using pupswap.swp why would it be named pupswap  :?:
Maybe the .swp Lubuntu was seeing, so it used it.

With 4GB of ram you really do not need swap.

I have 2GB ram and swap never gets used in Puppy.

You are right. Swap not needed with 4GB physical memory.
But I keep doing such things for 2 things--
1) To test puppy,
2) Self learning.
I hope it is all right with this forum. I get to learn a lot of things (with thanks to all contributors who help me).

I am still not clear on how you ever got offered to make pupswap.swp or why.
But it is a computer.
Stuff just happens, sometimes!

I am wondering, if the make a swap automatically, for low memory computers, is still in the shutdown code.
If it still is. Why it would be activated by your 4GB of RAM :?

I coming days, I am planning to refresh the puppy installation. That time I will be more observant and give feedback.
Pl. tell me, while reinstalling puppy, would it be okay if I manually remove the puppy related folders, boot from flash drive and make new install? Or something else is needed?

That will work.
Just delete the old install and do a new fresh install.

Hi all i am trying to install a wine setup in my xenial pup 64 7.0.8.5 os.

i remember years ago in puppy 432 there was wine.pet or/and wine.sfs files available that worked on puppy easily.

in xenial pup64 installing wine from the ubuntu resources in PPM does not work. there are to many things missing and the gui Play-on-linux does not woant to work.

does anyone have a working copy of wine that works with xenialpup64 it would be great.

You can get about any version of Wine you want from here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=88711
They are all in pet form.
Read the info in the first post carefully.
That first post also has a pet for making Wine menu entries and for Wine tricks. You may want them also.

There are 32bit and 64bit versions of Wine in this topic.
I would also suggest you load the xenialpup 32bit compatibility sfs, even if you install a 64 bit version of Wine.
Never know if something may need 32bit something.

Hi all i am having a problem with the Panel.
I am using XenialPUP64_7.5
I have an external monitor plugged in. the panel is only displaying on the 2nd monitor. i don't want this. what i do want is to have the panel displaying on the main laptop screen only, I do want this.

here are my settings

Here is the desktop: Lock, Zip, Trash are the edge of the main Laptop screen where the panel should be displaying.

in the image Display Settings above you can see on the laptop screen settings the position box is greyed out. if i could change that to Left then I believe I may get things to work.

I would appreciate any help you could provide to fix this weird error. The panel/Tray should be set to display on the laptop/default screen only.[/img]

hi HiDeHo,

in JWMDesk on the tray tab (as in your picture above) , i found that if you click 'apply' it fixes the tray when in dual monitor setup

@666philb
dont forget to add this group "input" with :
#addgroup input
because it is needed by udevd ( dmesg shows : udevd[3199]: specified group 'input' unknown).

Other problem : pmcputemp doesnt work with my AMD Athlon Dual-Core Processor

Other problem : with grub4dos for full install , the generated menu was not correct, so I had to manually change it.

@HiDeHo,
I have an external monitor plugged in. the panel is only displaying on the 2nd monitor. i don't want this. what i do want is to have the panel displaying on the main laptop screen only
Maybe try this:
Run PPM, search arandr, install it, launch arandr in menu System or in console.
With your mouse place the picture of the screen of the laptop to the the right or the left of the VGA monitor.
Apply, Save.

If the whole display is correct:
Launch JWMdesk, Tray1, Geometry: Center if your laptop is on the right of the VGA monitor.
If not, try left or right.

Edit: is this what you want ? The monitor is on the left, laptop on the right.

HP envy 17 notebook cpu intel I7-2630QM @ 2Ghz X-64bit RAM 8GB 1920*1080 32bit depth
All downloads are from NLUUG & md5 sum checked before burning
Boot from live CD & no pup-save files .. fresh/new run

Tried Xenialpup 7.5 64bit / also the 32bit version
Also tried Tahrpup 64 diff versions

Symtomes : on Xenial-64bit loads both sfs files .. Done
updating network stuff optical... Done
Loading kernel modules .. -> PC switches OFF

- Xenial 32bit .. loads sfs .. done
loading kernel modules .. just see msg (after a few tries)then laptop switches off

- Tahrpup64 2~3 diff versions same thing .. No full boot, laptop switches off

- Tried last Fatdog 64 , needed to run xorgwizard to get X .. vga Intel driver
got to X & Inet ok :
but it brutally shuts down this laptop on certain benchmark tests

I can confirm the burns were sucessfull as tried each same boot cd on 2 diff laptops :
an older acer travelmate 2300 32 bit, and a 64bit Dell laptop both booted to X

One that worked out of the box on this laptop was Xenial64 ver 6.734..
got straight to X .. correct screen res 1920*1080, 2 clicks on Inet ..did all benchmarks no probs
Did not fully test it though.. silly me didn't keep a copy of the iso .. ran out of CD-RW
Any help/feedback welcome.. willing to test .. an old puppy fan

In the computers bios?
Is fast boot disabled?
Secure boot disabled and or legacy boot enabled?
