DLNA Quirky Xerus64 Pup V1 - released 2nd July 2016

#31 Post by ETP »

Hi gc,

Thanks for the update. I gather from you that the Acer X2 does not have a HDMI outlet which blows my theory above out of the water. :)
I presently have no idea why the combination of this 64-bit Quirky based Pup and your vesa connected
AMD with onboard Nvidia chip is an unhappy marriage giving both problematic sound and video.
You are best sticking with the Intel. Thanks though for persevering and testing.

@ALL

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS:

Print Server:

If running a DLNA server such as this one, it may well be that it will be on 24/7 and it makes sense to
attach a USB printer to it and also run it as network print server. It is advisable to first give this Pup a static I/P.

Forum member rcrsn51's superb P910nd Print Server utility is already included in this Pup for that purpose.

Code: Select all

p910nd_print_server_64bit-0.97|p910nd_print_server_64bit|0.97||System|88K|
It is very simple to set up with no need to install any printer drivers on the server. I have tested printing
to it from both XP & Precise 5.4.3

The thread and instructions can be found here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=60474

HTTP Server: (Python is already installed)

Another great utility also by rcrsn51 is his SimplePythonHTTPServer-1.1.pet (13.19KB)

The thread and instructions can be found here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... e01#415132

In the context of this Pup the share folder should be set as below so that the contents of the targeted media
repository become available not only to the TV but within the browser of every PC on the Lan be they running Windows or Linux.

Within the browser you would target http://192.168.1.3:8000 (Use the static IP that you assign)

When the repository contents appear in the browser bookmark it then rename the bookmark to "Repository".
Browsers will play or display any format they can handle such as mp4.
If they cannot display or play the file they will download it and you can then play/view it with another app.

Fix for GetFlash:

Adobe recently changed their urls causing "GetFlash" to cease to function.

The attached pet fixes the issue in BarryK's Quirky/WoofQ based pups which use getflash-1.5-4B.

Once installed you should be able to upgrade to the latest version of Flash - 11.2.202.632

N/B Google Chrome uses its own internal version of flash but this is used by other browsers such as Firefox.

.
Optional Utility To Record Anything Playing In Kodi:

Installing the contents of the following directory will provide the above.
It contains 7 .deb files plus a pet to set things up so that kodi can use vlc as an external player/recorder.
(The files total 2623k)

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_iVV ... EVhUGRqcW8

It uses NapoleonWilsOn's git which can be found here:

https://github.com/NapoleonWils0n/kodi- ... orefactory

There are many facets to its other features and numerous instructional videos on his YouTube Channel but using vlc
reduces it to its simplest form and there is no need to do anything other than install the files that I have provided.

Right clicking an item that you wish to play will bring up the menus shown below. From the second one select vlc.
Within vlc ensure that within the "Toolbars Editor" that you select the profile "One Liner-Style".
That will display the record button which you can then use on the fly.

Link to instructional videos for anyone wanting to explore more of the features:

Hi Billtoo,

Thanks for your reports. I gather that it is a case of "so far so good." It is probably time for a couple of tips.

1 .If you are watching something in Kodi then suddenly decide you want to record it, press the letter "y" on the keyboard.
That will bring up the contextual menu shown below. That lists a lot of options but for full manual control click on vlc.
Kodi will then totally disappear into the background as vlc takes over and you can click the vlc record button to start & stop recording.

2. In vlc you can separate the video window & the control window by in preferences, unticking both "Show controls in full screen mode"
and "Integrate video in interface". The control window may then be minimised and the right click menu used on the vlc icon in the system tray.

I realise that you sometimes use two monitors so you may be able to then place the video window on the second monitor but control it from the first.

Thanks for the tip with Vlc, I right click on a selection in kodi and choose mpv, that works well too.

I still use 2 monitors on one pc so I'll make another flash drive install and test it on that pc.

DLNA Quirky Xerus64 Pup V1 - released 2nd July 2016

#40 Post by ETP »

.
WARNING:

On Wednesday, August 31, 2016 the Chrome team were delighted to announce the promotion of Chrome 53 to the stable channel - 53.0.2785.92

Please do not upgrade to this new version as major work will be needed before it will work with any Quirky based Pups such as this one.

I expect in due course to either issue a service pack or possibly a new version of this Pup. In either case a revised update utility

will also be needed to cope with future issues.

DLNA Quirky Xerus64 Pup V1 - released 2nd July 2016

UPDATE PLUS OPTIONAL PET

It has always been the case that Google Chrome has been awkward to run as root or spot in Puppy.

In addition, in BarryK's experimental Quirky based Pups, only minimal sandboxing has been possible.

The release of Chrome Version 53.0.2785.92 (64-bit) has only served to increase those difficulties.

Chrome has also acquired additional dependencies not present in Pups prior to Werewolf or Xerus.

The net is also awash with reports of people unable to run their existing extensions following an upgrade to 53.

I have witnessed that and a completely fresh install is best including prior deletion of the:

A. /.cache/google-chrome folder plus its contents

B. /.config/google-chrome folder plus its contents.

(N/B These folders may also be named as "google-chrome-stable" or just "chrome" depending on the Pup)

Please also note that there will be zero sandboxing with Quirky based Pups.

You can of course opt to remain on your current version. In this Pup both Seamonkey & Firefox 48.01 are

present and the main reason for including Chrome are its extensions that may be used for casting and

for viewing/playing the contents of the targeted media repository. If you wish to proceed these are the steps:

Step1: Download the pet and export your bookmarks.

Step2: Take a screenshot or note of your Chrome extensions & versions as with the exception of Google Cast which is now
built in, you will have to reinstall and configure them at the end of the process.

Step3: Back up your Pup. (Always a wise move)

Step4: Use QPM to uninstall both Google Chrome Stable & any existing Get Latest Chrome Version pet.

Step5: Delete the folders as at A. and B. above.

Step6: Install the new pet & then use the new internet menu item to install 53.0.2785.92

Step7: Import your bookmarks & reinstall your extensions.

*** EDIT: 8th Sept 2016 ***

On Wednesday September 7th Google updated the stable channel to 53.0.2785.101 for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
I can confirm that the new pet successfully updates from 53.0.2785.92 in both Werewolf & Xerus.

On 24th July I issued a flash_fix.pet after Adobe changed their URLs.
They have now done so again!

Please install the attached pet in order to upgrade to Flash 11.2.202.637 which is used by Firefox.

On Wed 12th October Chrome stable 54.0.2840.59 was issued. That includes PepperFlash 23.0.0.185
and the "Get Latest Chrome Version" option on the Internet sub-menu may be used to upgrade to that.

EDIT: 16th October 2016

Egads they have changed them again to correct typos.

EDIT: 27th October 2016

Again - this is really annoying!

EDIT: 31st October 2016
No change to version, just the url

EDIT: 2nd November 2016
Perhaps Adobe have security reasons for this - url again.

EDIT: 9th November 2016
New pet now attached. :)

EDIT: 18th December 2016 (Flash 24.0.0.186)
New pet now attached. :)

DLNA Quirky Xerus64 Pup V1 - released 2nd July 2016

#43 Post by ETP »

Flash:

Please see today's EDIT to the previous post.

Kodi:

One of Kodi add-ons included O.O.T.B. in this Pup was the "Apple iTunes Trailers" add-on.
That has not been updated for some years and ceased to function a few days ago just giving a network error.
Worry ye not. A new improved beta version has been released details of which can be found here:

http://www.koditips.com/apple-trailers- ... all-guide/

The new add-on allows for downloads of trailers when the selected trailer is right clicked.
It will then ask for the download path to be input.
That should be set as /mount/pool/ or /mount/pool/Trailers/ if you wish to first create a seperate
directory on your targeted repository for trailers.

Downloaded trailers are in .m4v format which most smart TVs should handle.

DLNA Quirky Xerus64 Pup V2 - released 3rd July 2017

#44 Post by ETP »

This is DLNA Quirky Xerus64-V2.

It is based on BarryK’s Quirky Xerus64 8.0 that was released in April 2016. The kernel is 4.4.7

Initial install is to an 8GB USB2/3 stick if the true capacity of the stick is sufficient. If it is not, a larger stick must be used.
Subsequent transfer to a HDD/SSD is possible if required.

It is distributed as an image of a 8GB USB stick with a 3 partition MSDOS layout .
The first tiny (15MB) vfat partition is the boot partition. Two test videos are held on the 2nd vfat (300MB) partition.
The 3rd f2fs partition contains the full system install with free space for more apps. The available free space
on that is also not sufficient for a proper repository/pvr, so once you have tested that the Pup works with your TV
you must then target a repository of an adequate size as descibed below.

Main extra items in V2: (All previously optional items are now also included)

vokoscreen_2.4.0-2|easy to use screencast creator
rdesktop_1.8.3-1|RDP client for Windows NT/2000 Terminal Server and Windows Servers
grdesktop_0.23+d040330-3|GNOME frontend for the rdesktop client
mediainfo-gui_0.7.82-1|graphical utility for reading information from audio/video files
i7z-gui_0.27.2+git2013.10.12-g5023138-3|GUI for i7z a reporting tool for i7 i5 i3 CPUs (Real time monitor of CPU core freqs)
mpv_0.14.0|video player based on MPlayer/mplayer2
PupControl-3.0|Control panel
GetLatest64bitChromeVersionWoofQ-MK1|Get Latest Chrome Version
SimplePythonHTTPServer-1.1|Simple Python HTTP server
Nvidia Driver Version 340.96
Recording abilities in Kodi (Uses NapoleonWilsOn's git).
WebRTC Group Video Chat with a choice of Talky.io, Skype for Web 10.2.0.3000 and appear.in. (Appear.in is highly recommended)
gpptp-noarch-2.0-jafadmin|Gpptp v2.0 PPTP VPN client
BBC_CBSN_TV_Panel_Any_Pup-MK4|Needs vlc, fast PC & vpn for BBC outside UK with minimum 10mbps. vlc is used to play and to optionally record channels.
Additional icons on wbar for mpv, kodi, CD open/close and vokoscreen
Some features of TV/PVR Pup have been backported to this Pup. In particular for UK users the BBC TV panel.
That may be used outside the UK with a suitable VPN.

Currently included software versions: (All user upgradeable)

Thunderbird 52.2.1 (Release update channel)
Waterfox 54.0.0.1 (Substituted for Firefox. Pre-installed Complete YouTube Saver 5.7.36 add-on)
Google Chrome Stable 59.0.3071.115 (Pepper flash 26.0.0.131) - No sandboxing)
Flash 26.0.0.131 for Waterfox plus update_flash-1.8 pet.
DLNA: (ReadyMedia a.k.a. minidlna – Version 1.1.5_x86_64)

The primary purpose of this Pup is to act as preconfigured DLNA server. No setup of that feature is required for testing.
The idea is that having gone through the usual quicksetup & network settings DLNA should work OOTB.
Following setup, just reboot and then head off to the TV to test whether or not it works with your particular TV make & model.

In this version the second partition on the stick contains two test videos.
The intention is that having tested that they work with your TV; you then switch over to your main media repository
which may be on any accessible drive or partition including another USB stick. An external USB drive is ideal.
A pre-existing repository may be targeted. If you opt to use another stick as a repository I would suggest a minimum of 32GB.

At the bottom of the Utility menu is an option “Change DLNA Repository

Reserved:

An optional 3rd test video is available via the following direct download link.
It is only 55MB so there is enough free space for it on the 2nd test partitition of
the stick or you can add it to your real repository.
It showcases the use of the video player and can also be played with mpv or vlc.
It is 1080p and comes over well on a smart TV. It is not on my YouTube channel.

EDIT: 15th July 2017

If anyone finds that CBS News has ceased to function in their location please install the
optional service pack (dlnaxerus64v2_SP1.pet). It contains scripts with alternate mrls and can
be found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

DLNA Quirky Xerus64 Pup V2 - released 3rd July 2017

#46 Post by ETP »

Optional pet - (lockstate-1_.5-x86_64_ETP.pet)

This is based on forum member SFR's superb utility detailed here:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=110710

It is very handy when using a wireless keyboard that lacks indicator leds.
The pet only differs from the original 64-bit pet in that it contains a pre-configured conf file
together with a simple autostart file.

Install the pet and then restart X to bring it into operation.

To toggle the states either use the relevant keyboard keys or left click the indicator icons themselves.
Right clicking the icons gives access to a variety of options.

DLNA Quirky Xerus64 Pup V2 - released 3rd July 2017

#47 Post by ETP »

Google Chrome Stable 61.0.3163.91 was released on 14th September 2017.

It requires some newer libraries that are not currently present in this Pup which is
based on BarryK’s Quirky Xerus64 8.0 that was released in April 2016.

In order to upgrade to the latest version of Chrome please proceed as follows:

1. Download the latest GetLatest64bitChromeVersionWoofQ-MK2.5.pet from here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

2. Use QPM to uninstall your current version of "google-chrome-stable_current_amd64"

3. Use QPM to uninstall the original GetLatest64bitChromeVersionWoofQ-MK1.pet

4. Install the downloaded MK2.5 pet and then use the "Get Latest Chrome Version" Internet menu item to upgrade.

Notes:
The MK2.5 pet is only suitable for use with DLNA Quirky Xerus64 Pups V1 & V2

Can this pup be installed on a dedicated hard disk? If so, how? Thank you.

DLNA Quirky Xerus64 Pup V2 - released 3rd July 2017

Hi step,

The first requirement is that you have created a working stick that is happy to
boot on the PC in question and is performing as expected.

Transfer to a HD/SSD on that PC is very simple.

The first task is to create an 10GB f2fs dedicated partition somewhere on the disk using gParted.
You can use this Pup running off the stick to do that.

Having done that shut down the Pup and boot into another f2fs aware Pup. (Any recent Pup should do)

Use that Pup to copy over the complete contents of the 3rd partition on the DLNA stick to the new partition on the HD/SSD.
Note that in this instance it is a full install rather than a frugal install.

Your next port of call is to syslinux.cfg which is held in the /boot/syslinux/ directory on the 1st partition of the DLNA stick.
Note that there is only one active line in syslinux.cfg (the last one) and that the rest of the file gives worked examples of
how to modify that code so that the stick can be used to boot then load either a full or frugal install that has been copied
over to a hard disc partition.

The simplest thing to do is to comment out the single existing active line and to create a new one below. That enables you in future
to exchange the comments to boot from the contents of the HD partition or the original stick.

Another advantage of this approach i.e. continuing to use the stick so that the bootloader ldlinux.sys loads the kernel (vmlinuz),
is that no modifications are needed to any existing bootloader and menu that you currently use for anything else on the HD.

To run your DLNA server you only need to insert the stick then power on. Power on without the stick inserted & your normal menu
system will appear.

Once you have the above method working there is another option which does require editing your existing boot method.
If you wish to do that you will need to also copy vmlinuz from the first partition on the stick to a place on the
hard disc where your bootloader can find it and create a new menu item that points at it together with the new partition.
Note that not all boot-loaders recognise f2fs but you can use another format if that is the case and do not mind a slight speed penalty.

Thank you for your detailed answer, ETP. I will report back if it doesn't work for me.
