Can I use a webcam in Gaim or some other IM client?

#1 Post by Josh »

Hey, I'm just wondering how to use my webcam through GAIM or if its even possible ..... somebody told me that they thought gnumeeting would work with puppy, but they weren't sure. Will it work? and where do I get it if it will? Also, what about viewing webcams through GAIM? Would it matter if the other user isn't using linux? If I need another messenger service, what do I need, and where do I get it?
Thanks

As far as I know GAIM does not yet have web cam functionality. There is another project (A friendly GAIM fork) gaim-vv that is working on that.

What I remember is that it only receives video, it does not send it.

What I have been able to do is to use gnomeeting with my webcam. sending and receiving video and sound.

I did that by installing the spca5xx drivers: here is the link

It does not support all the webcams, but it supports the most common ones.

I haven't tried in Puppy just in Fedora Core 3.

I may try to compile gnomeeting when I have some time.

What brand/model/chipset of webcam do you have?

Check the compatibility list on the link I gave you and see if it is supported
