Yes foxpup, having another repository to choose from (devuan jessie) is part of the charm and adds to puppy variety.

First I have to look for a more powerful PC.
For the moment I just dive into puppy.sfs (and pupsave.fs) to take out or put in as i like.
Nah, I turn off speedstep on my 2005 laptop and let woof-ce build at 800MHz. This way it is quiet and the CPU uses only 10.8W.

Not wanderer, no. Iguleder started the Devuan woof and then had to
leave for important reasons (such as earning a living IIRC).

3-4 years ago, wanderer provided the interim producing various Puppies, between
Barry's retirement and the constitution of the woof-CE. Wanderer played a vital role
during that period. We are not grateful enough towards wanderer. He helped maintain
Puppy's momentum at the time.

Hello all.

Why I am on this thread this afternoon:

Ref.: davids45's post, bottom of page 2, item [4].

I have been working on the compatibility between the Puduan's special desktop and
Zigbert's pwidgets. A big part of the problem is Zigbert's use of conky 1.6 and my
use of conky 1.9.

I am still working on it, but basically, at this point, I can get my scripts out of the
way of the pwidgets, but not the reverse (if the user wanted to re-instate the
original Puduan desktop, for example). Zigbert's low version of conky squishes
my higher version. And my conky configuration needs the conky 1.9, in particular
to indicate the desktop number (2nd line, last item to the right).

Any ideas? BFN.

Hello, "Puduanites"!

I gave it another try, this time trying to get conky to load its config file as
conky-1.6 or as conky-1.9.1. That would have made it very simple
-- for the Puduan desktop use conky-1.9.1
-- for pwidgets use conky-1.6.

But no, conky has to be identified as conky. Period.

So folks, unless one of you brilliant people has a stroke of genius, the user will
have to make a very final decision on 1st boot:
-- EITHER (s)he wants the Puduan desktop
-- OR (s)he wants the pwidgets
-- forever and ever, amen. :)

If you install pwidgets, you can't go back to the Puduan desktop. It's a point of
no-return kind of thing. Not in the same pupsave, anyway.

In practice, this means:
before installing the pwidgets, move Startup scripts (I mean in /root/Startup)
conky-2l.sh and rclock.sh to /root/Startup-NON. Then install your pwidgets. Then
reboot or, less drastically, restart X;

or do not install pwidgets.

The only thing left for me to write, then, is a one-way script for the empty PuppyPin
option, to move the weather and aemenu icons out of the pwidgets' way. (3/4
done, actually.)

If you want the Puduan desktop back after you've chosen the pwidgets, you'll
have to start the Puduan afresh with another pupsave.

Hi jlst.

Euh, no. This is a remaster of the basic Puduan Jessie woof output you and
666philb led me to. Once I had that output I started remastering.

Besides, I'm not touching that database. It makes me anxious. I'm too afraid
I would introduce errors in it. Operating on a raw database is always clockmaker's
work.

Basically the packages I added/removed are:
-- the wget and its libraries. (See end of the other thread.)
-- I removed the vlc libraries I could find.
-- I added some libs so that an mplayer-1.3 sfs that I had compiled for the DPup
Wheezy I woofed last spring could work.
-- I added the series of colored wmx's I had compiled a while back.

The rest are my own scripts and aemenus, which I composed through the years
to respond to needs I had.

Edit, Aug. 22 2016: Also the full Sound eXchange suite (compiled on this Puduan)
and the most recent less (v. 481) with companion scripts and files.

Give me a day or two and I'll prepare a tree or ls list plus an archive of the added
packages. That's the best I can do, sorry.

Quick manual frugal install. All basics working on initial boot.

Loaded a Chromium sfs, updated the PPM database and installed a couple of packages.Getting used to the interface but seems to be working well so far.

Great on ya', Musher, for stickin' with Woofin' up this Puduan Pup - congratulations! 8)

I haven't had the time to try it out yet, but look forward to it (the WM and aemenu stuff in particular - neato!).

As far as the Pwidgets/conky version conflict issue, just a few thoughts that pop into my head - I haven't tried, but may be worth a try (David)...

1) Re-install Puduan's conky v1.9.1 after installing Pwidgets, in order to overwrite the "old" conky version from Pwidgets. In my tinkering, I've found later conky versions work mostly just fine over Pwidgets, but the Pwidget's config files will often require to be fiddled with in order to get them displaying properly again.

2) Conversely, unpack and manually install Pwidgets - everything but the included (old) conky, to keep Puduan's conky intact.

3) Those Pwidgets' unwanted window decorations can likely be eliminated by fiddling with the Pwidgets config files (in /usr/local/pwidgets/widgets/configs directory), maybe (ya - big maybe - but...) using something like -

Code: Select all

background yes
own_window yes
own_window_type normal
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
own_window_transparent yes
Maybe try varying "own_window_type" between "normal", "roxdesktop" and "desktop".

Just some random ideas, if worth anything.

Again - congrats Musher! Go, man - GO! :D Very cool!

Yeah actually it's what i call "advanced usage", while doing this you usually have to build over and over again, while you keep adding/fixing entries, you should also know the packages-templates dir and how it works, so you can understand why some files get stripped and so on, some bugs lie there.

There is also the official online pet repos, which require priviledged access for someone building a pup officially to upload pet packages (custom compiled apps, fixes, etc). I remember tahrpup "was not reproducible" for some time... actually a long time.

Overall this is something that requires some knowledge about the whole process, i think i can do this, but i'm alienated by 3 things: i like just to contribute code, feedback and it's been 2 years since i started using pcmanfm exclusively, so i'm not to keen to see to see the final results.. and i'd like to see my oldest hardware finally die in peace, but it's taking too long.
i guess i should use a semi-powerful pc to start building pups and updating the config files... maybe.

Drive icons not quite right

#45 Post by davids45 »

G'jour/day musher0,

I have been playing around with my Frugal Puduan, lately to see if my 28-odd partitions would show up as desktop icons, to get pwidgets running as I'm used to, and seeing what else I can do to personalise as well as test your interesting Pup.

Your advice about using the Drive Icons tool did not work - for the values I tried for the placements & spacings, one partition separated but the rest re-form a pile beside it.
I manually dragged sda's 14 partitions out in a line across the desktop but sdb's 14 icons form a pile if I get the Drive Icons tool to try a re-placing (screenshots).

Re pwidgets: I deleted the puduan save-file, restarted my Frugal, then deleted the 1.9 conky version and installed my pwidgets pet (with conky-1.6). Then I linked the widget "config" files back to my data partition widget files so I get "my" widgets. It now looks OK (screenshot) although restarting puduan has been odd - sometimes I get the old start-up display and need to run pwidgets from the /usr/share/applications/ file (not many tests here so I'm not sure I'm reporting what's happening correctly).
I'll try Moat's suggestion and see if my pwidgets will take an 'update'.

Other desktop icons I've set-up from links or menu-type files dragged to the desktop also only appear after a few clicks after re-booting - again, I'm not sure what's happening.
But once the desktop is how I expected it to be from the previous booting, everything I've tried runs OK.

Re the "f" sfs with Mplayer & Seamonkey: how do I activate these? I see mplayer in the multimedia menu and it plays video files (I had a sound start-up issue with mplayer which muting and un-muting seemed to fix). But where's seamonkey? This is my basic email+browser which I usually run via a symlink (program and profile) for every Pup and would do again for puduan, but I want to have the media player option. I don't have a symlink for a media player package as all previous Pups have come with a 'built-in' media player.

The Games desktop icon when left-clicked has a too-narrow menu list of the games loaded from my sfs. The 'Ace of Penguins' series is truncated to a list of just 'Ace' (screenshot). It may also be a bit too long to see games at the bottom of the list?

I also see a lot of "extra files" in my Frugal Puduan's sub-directory - are these necessary as some look quite sizable?

Hi David.

The many small "Puduan" files in your pupsave partition: sorry I did not have the
time to get to that and explain it. It's one of the features of this Puduan.

Those are your "dailies": every time you reboot or shutdown the Puduan one of
these zip.lz archives is created with what you changed in your Puppy today up to
the time of reboot or shutdown. They have the name of the Puppy, a date and a
number. You can keep only the highest numbered one or the biggest one and
erase the rest.

"Dailies" is a time-based (aka history-based) system back-up technique. It's fast,
small, automatic, but efficient. It's "back-up as you go".

It was a request from a member last year and then I developed it a bit more.

May I suggest that you create a "History" directory in your /mnt/home to store
them in. And you keep only the highest-numbered one or the biggest one for the
past day. Never do that on the day itself, please, you'll upset the numbering
routine in the script.

This "dailies" technique reduces the probability of the user losing important data
to almost nothing.

The script that does it is located at /etc/init.d/stop_today-files3c if you're
interested to know how it's done.

To retrieve the data, you first unpack a particular "daily" with lzip, then with zip.
Simple as pie.

Program desktop icons re-appear

#47 Post by davids45 »

G'jour/day again musher0,

Still in the same booting of Puduan as I had from my last post.

I just ran the Desktop Drive Icons Manager with the desktop as per my previous post and, lo and behold, the several program icons returned and also the string of sda partition icons I'd manually dragged from the pile.

But there is still no well-spaced row of partition icons across the screen bottom.

I changed the wallpaper as well from the plain green 'default' and removed the side panel.

Hello again David.

-- I designed the Puduan to boot to an almost empty desktop. If you want to
deactivate that feature,
-- open /root/.xinitrc in your geany editor
-- activate the line numbering feature in geany
-- comment line 131 (I suppose you know how to do that?)
-- uncomment line 133
-- save and restart X.
This will restore the default Puppy behavior of booting to the regular icon-
populated desktop.

-- About the games icon: remove it! I'll remove it in the next alpha too. It's only
about games, and there are more important fish to fry. There's already a "Fun"
section in the jwm menu or in the wmx menu.

Hi David.

What I'm not getting is the random position of the icons. Never saw that before.
For example, did you put your OpenOffice where it is or did it just randomly get
there? Do you want your drive icons to be in the middle of the screen like that?

Anyway, since you don't like my desktop design, deactivate it as I indicated above.
That will restore "my notion of" the default Puppy desktop next time you type
< xwin >. And from there you can rebuild "the" traditional "triangle" of Puppy icons.

Once you have it to your satisfaction, make a copy of your new PuppyPin by typing
in console:

Code: Select all

cp -f /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin.back-up
I'm a big believer in back-ups. They save the user a lot of stress.

Perhaps bring the problem of the stacking drive icons to the attention of the
present maintainer of that script. jlst will probably know who that is at the moment.
I suspect that that particular problem would be upriver from me. I don't know that many
people who have 28 partitions! :) In good logic, I can only undo what I have done.

Best I can do, David, best I can do.

I just added the description of two features in the features post : dailies and partview.

Also how to update your wmx menu after you've installed a new app.
