Congratulations musher0!
I am playing around with your puppy and exploring it is a real joy.
I did not expect a new puppy would work that well on an old 2002 amd athlon machine. It is fast and it has its own look and feel.
If have no issues yet. I am posting this from Links in Puduan.

No joy with .bashrc edit for world-weather

#62 Post by davids45 »

G'day/jour musher0,

I tried your suggestion for .bashrc and echoing $term and both resulted in the same behaviour - 'xterm' was the answer in the terminal, and world-weather still has that extra <press Return> step to display the report.

I did another loading of puduan-6.0.0 frugal and tried a different placement for my too-many partition icons. I don't want them there but when I set the icons to be 'Left', they aligned in the rows (now columns) that I would like across the bottom of the desktop :D .
I then tried to set them back to 'Bottom' but only the sdb drives moved :( .
Someone else with 'too many partitions and not enough sense' noted in another forum thread that the current drive-icon sort is not numerically correct once past '9' (e.g. sda10 comes before sda2), so perhaps there will be a fix for the drive icons script in woof that could also look at the placement process when there are so many icons?

Hi David.

Thanks for re-testing. Strange behaviour indeed.
I'll mention it upriver to jlst, one of the Puppy githup devs.

Hello foxpup.

That's music to my ears! Glad you're enjoying it!
Many thanks for your feedback!

Edit:
I think that using kernel 3.14 instead of a recent one is a key factor
in being able to run the Puduan Pup on older machines.

puduan-birth's looks

#65 Post by belham2 »

Hi Musher,

Been reading this thread for a while now, congrats on giving puduan- birth!! I've finally found time, this weekend, to give it a try. Can I ask one question, though?

When I get puduan installed, loaded up and it finally stirs to life the first time on my screen, will it look exactly like this (in your reply in this thread)?:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 540#921540

....and, if not, why not? That's no fair teasing us like that :lol:

So how do I get that gorgeous background, plus I want the 2 line conky very, very much :D I have come to sincerely dislike conky versions that take up too much of either my laptop mini's screen and/or even on my regular desktops. I've tinkered with various conkys and have gotten some decent looking "one -line" ones, but yours looks better.... Plus, as mentioned, I am sucker for deep earth background brown colors.

Hello Belham2.

Funny guy! Who's teasing who? ;) That's not mine! That's a recent post
by someone else with some American flags as icons! :lol:

Thanks for the compliment though.

Whatever window manager you choose (jwm or a color of wmx) you should
be getting the conky two-liner at the top of the screen and the ROX side
panel to the left. -- Without doing anything. --

If you choose wmx as the window manager, in addition to the above you
get a transparent bmpanel2 panel at the bottom.

With jwm as the window manager, you'll have a bottom panel too, but on
demand, as the mouse touches the bottom of the screen. With jwm, you
also have the desks list and the tray icons when your mouse touches the
right side of the screen at +/- 2 o'clock.

IHTH.

~~~~~~~~~~
Edit, Sept. 3, 2016:
Hello again, belham2.
Please find attached my current conky 2-liner plus some draft files. One
of them contains the straight English translation.
As to the backgrounds, you can do a search for "wallpapers nature" or
"wallpaper nature photo" with any search engine, and you'll be presented
with literally thousands of choices. E.g.:
http://www.ask.com/web?qsrc=1&o=0&l=dir ... archTopBox
Save any wallpaper that you like to /usr/share/backgrounds. To change
the background picture, you use the "Nathan_Wallpaper_Setter" from
your "desktop" sub-menu.
I guess you are right about that. Tahr runs fine too.
Though I recently tried Fluxpup 1.6.1 with 3.9.11 kernel and it does not take off. I'll have a look into it when I can find the time.
My machine has 2 issues: only SSE and not SSE2 and, to a lesser extent, GC nvidia Geforce256 is legacy71xx. Maybe i will find out about others. It's quite a lot of fun.
Hi again Musher,
Finally had a chance to set your Puduan up. I set it up on this:
Processor : 2x AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
Memory : 1783MB (564MB used)
Machine Type : Physical machine
Operating System : Fatdog64 [710]
User Name :
Date/Time : Tue Aug 30 20:29:14 2016
-Display-
Resolution : 2560x1024 pixels
OpenGL Renderer : Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS780 (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.7.0)
X11 Vendor : The X.Org Foundation
-Audio Devices-
Audio Adapter : HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
Audio Adapter : HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
-Input Devices-
HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm : 3=
HDA ATI SB Rear Mic
HDA ATI SB Front Mic
HDA ATI SB Line
HDA ATI SB Line Out Front
HDA ATI SB Line Out Surround
HDA ATI SB Line Out CLFE
HDA ATI SB Line Out Side
I had some inital problems when it first loaded (and first save set up) that nearly all desktop cons were piled on top of each other, plus the jwmrc-tray was a touch messed up, with missing icons (menu button disappeared), along with jwmtray icons that launched nothing. I went into .jwmrc-tray, started afresh, re-set everything, made sure ithe jwmrc-tray was also set right in the initrd/mnt/dev_save/puduansave.
Aside from all the French language throughout the many of the menus and settings (which I like, as it made your pup fun & interesting, and forced my brain to remember the little French I do know).....but aside from that, I really like your Puduan. First of all, it is responsive and fast, for my needs (mainly browsing, downloading, some videos).
I had to bust out a big smile when I punched that funny looking "3taquets" icon, thinking what in the world did Musher do here?! Then, to my astonishment, not one, not two, but three terminals popped open---and I thought to myself, I LUV THIS GUY! Every pup should have this!!:D
I also like the desktop Meteo. Everything overall is good stuff. I wasn't sure if a browser other than "links" was included, so I updated the Puppy Manager & downloaded Firefox32. Dang, everytime I use an old version of FF, it reminds me how fast and fun that browser used to be (it's a bloated pig today, imho---even Palemoon, Chrome, Chromium, all have become piggies in some manner).
Anyhow, thank you for this pup. Here's a pic, using one of your included backgrounds ....it's not the deep, earth brown colors I was looking for, but my daughter & I are fond of not only computer puppies, but also real live ones :)
Hi belham2.
Thanks for installing the Puduan Pup.
Some of the issues you mention
-- proper language separation
-- icons piling up, etc.
have been noted by DavidS45 and a couple of other forum members, and
will be resolved, hopefully, in the next version -- which I'm working on,
slow but sure!!!
As to the included browser, it's the latest Seamonkey, with links2 as the
secondary "html viewer" or "jiffy" browser. I thought it was faster than
Firefox, and it has an ok wysiwyg html editor to complement abiword.
Actually, I intended this Puduan Pup to be a showcase for the various
"colors" of the wmx window manager. But I left jwm in, for those people
who lack a sense of adventure?! ;) :lol:
As I mentioned in my previous post, the jwm bar is divided in two parts:
-- the opened programs line plus a couple of items at the bottom
(without the menu button and that's intentional, :) because the
jwm menu is always accessible by right click on an empty space on the
background. I never understood this duplication!)
-- the jwm tray proper and mini-desktop representations are on the right
edge of the screen, +/- at two o'clock.
~~~~~~~~~~
To try out the wmx window manager, go back to the initial black console
with Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and type < choice_wmx >. You are presented with a
choice of colors: my favorite at this point is "noir2". Very classy, black goes
with everything, eh? But I tried to make them all nice and suitable for
various dominant colors in the background or in the GTK theme.

I'll remove the wmx NavajoWhite-bristles !color" in the next version: it's
almost the same as the plain NavajoWhite theme but it turns out to be too
"crowded" for my taste. I thought that creating that "color" for wmx was a
good idea at the time, but experience seems to prove to the contrary.

In the 2nd post of this thread, you'll find tips on using the wmx wm. Plus
you have a cheat sheet describing pretty much all available wmx commands
under "magical keys" (or something like it!) in the wmx menu.

Try wmx! Who knows, you may like it! :lol:

~~~~~~~~~~
Yeah, the "3taquets" (transl.: "3tabs") are handy when you wish to do
more than one job in a terminal more or less at the same time. Glad you
like the idea!
Watch it! That icon is an on/off switch, like a couple of others I've made
available in the Puduan. Click, and the 3 consoles open; re-click, and the 3
consoles close.
(All the console icons are on/off switches, actually.)
~~~~~~~~~~
Again thanks for installing my Puduan Pup. If you have any more questions,
please feel free to ask!

TWYL.

PS: You screen capture doesn't show...

But, "touch" screen users would benefit it the system offers an option to make this a left-click option. Thus any touch user merely taps an open area for the Menu. Various ways to provide this, including a button swap or screen detection or ...

Just an idea as you ask.

Gcmartin,

Can I ask a question that I am confused about? I want to post more replies in this thread using pictures I uploaded & linked from my Photobucket account. But Musher in his reply to me yesterday (up 2 before this reply) said that my pic/img is/was not showing. Yet, when I test my murga msg (w/ this pic [img] link yesterday (and today) on different machines in my house, the pic shows up fine (the pic also loaded fine on a friend's computer) on whatever machine I am on/using.

I have always followed your pic posting advice thread from here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 6&t=106933

Do I understand things correctly in that if I want to have the forum host & thus post a pic in whatever thread, I have to make sure that pic is below max 256KB size (when using the murga forum as the host of any pic, I always tried to stay at ~200K, with a resolution below 400x600, and it works/worked).

But, if on the other hand, I don't want to have the murga forum host & thus post the pic, and instead I just want a link [img[/img] from another pic hosting site (like my Photobucket acct), does it matter what the resolution and/or pic size is? I mean, murga is not hosting the pic and is only supplying the [img] link & thus the pic appears on the user's screen straight from my Photobucket account. Right??? :?

Am I understanding all this correctly?

As I mentioned, I want to post a few more pics (using my photobucket site and thus not having to worry about the 256k size and max 799 resolution width murga imposes on us users) and ask Musher a couple of more questions.

Thank you very much for any help and/or clarification.

Hi gc.

Simple as pie: :)

Copy and paste the following bash code to your /usr/local/bin
directory as file < touch-screen-jwm.sh >.

Open a terminal in that directory and make the file executable with

Code: Select all

chmod +x  touch-screen-jwm.sh
Run it and restart jwm.

There you go, my friend: a touch-screen friendly jwm!
(To undo, follow the instructions in the file.)

The script would need a little more esthetics :), but it'll do for now!

TWYL
~~~~~~~~~~~~
P.S.
This script was written in the abstract following the indications in your
message. I know for a fact that it will change the click button for jwm,
but I don't have a touch screen.
Now all that's left for you, gcmartin, to do :) is to test this script on an
actual "touch-screen" screen and tell me if it works on an actual "touch-
screen" screen !!! :)
Then the world will be at peace!!! :D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
# /usr/local/bin/touch-screen-jwm.sh
# A request by gcmartin from the Puppy forum.
# Requires: replaceit
# musher0, Sept. 5 2016. GPL3.
####
cd /etc/xdg/templates

# First a back-up! Always a back-up!
cp -f --backup /etc/xdg/templates/_root_.jwmrc /root/_root_.jwmrc.bkp

# To implement a left-click behavior on jwm compatible
# with touch screens:

Hello Lassar.

I myself didn't give it anything, the Woof-CE developers did.

I don't really know "persistence save" like you have in Debian or in
Knoppix, not enough to explain it to you anyway. I believe that a
"persistence save" is a bit like the Puppy pupsave file.

The multi-session technique invented by Barry Kauler for the early
Puppies is not like that, it does not save to one big file.

As the name "multi-session" implies, each of your sessions is saved at
the end on the DVD in a folder. This folder has the date and time of the
save as its name. So your Puppy saves each of your sessions to its own
folder: you have multiple "saves", not one big persistence file.

The end result may be similar, but the technique is different.

~~~~~~~~~~~
As to your second question:
> Is there some special option in woof-ce to create a iso with
persistence save to DVD?
No. One cannot define it during the Woof-CE process of creating a Puppy.
This choice to save to DVD appears at the end of your first session with
your new Puppy, when you are ready to quit your first session. At that
moment, you are given three choices: save to DVD/CD, save to a
"pupsave" file or save to a folder on the hard drive. The save option is at
that moment, it is not offered during the Woof-CE process.
IHTH.
Hello all.
Re-installing pekwm (v. 1.17) on the Puduan-6 made it clear that it did
not have the xprop utility in its Woof-CE package. Pekwm needs xprop to
parse the number of desktops, but xprop is also very useful in itself to
analyze the properties of any open window.
So here you go. Someone's oversight up river has been corrected. The
attached pet archive is a Puppyfication of the following ArchLinux package:
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr ... xorg-xprop
Works fine on my Pup, but feedback welcome.
If you find more oversights like this, please let me know? TIA.
Hello all.
Please find attached a special edition of pekwm-1.17.
https://www.pekwm.org
Compiled expressly on and for the Puduan-6 Puppy, it sports:
-- the xprop utility above
-- about 15 themes, including the ones prepared for the Akita Puppy
__ by Scott Jarvis
-- an entirely new pekwm menu creator, which takes less than 3 seconds
__ to process approx. 230 entries. (See Note in 2nd post down.)
-- dynamic date and time in the menu, which calls a monthly calendar
-- script to I.D. the theme currently in use
-- a "Show desktop" off-and-on type entry in the pekwm submenu
__ (simillar to what icewm and jwm have), by "kittykatt". Wmctrl required.
-- the "Growl" Puppy Security Enhancements by Lobster
-- an exit script with numerous options, including starting a new session
__ with jwm
-- a small table explaining briefly the pekwm combo keys
-- a few docs presenting an overview of various pekwm features.
Not included:
-- type "pekwm urukrama" in any search engine to discover all kinds of
__ tips about pekwm
-- there are 190 pekwm themes as of this writing at box-look.org.
Any pekwm questions not answered in other resources, please ask in
the pekwm thread rather than here. TIA.
To reassemble the four attached files, open a terminal in the directory
where you downloaded them, and type:
Code: Select all
cat pekwm-1.17-a?.gz > pekwm-1.17.pet
You will then be able to install the reconstituted pet archive as usual.
I hope you will enjoy what's probably one of the world's best window
manager ! :D BFN.
Note about the new pekwm menu creator
Hello again all.
I just realized that the new pekwm menu creator was not picking up the
data in the mtpaint.desktop and the OpenOfficeDraw.desktop files.
The script is not at fault; its logic is sound. To correct this open the
program's desktop files and add the word > Graphics < on the
"Categories" line.
Ex. for mtpaint:
before:
Categories=Raster
after:
Categories=Graphics;Raster
(Note the semi-colon.)
After you've made the edit, refresh and reload your pekwm menu.
~~~
High-level developers sometimes use fanciful metonyms or synecdoches
(q.v. both terms in wikipedia) to classify their program!

Which means that they use a part to define the whole. It's not wrong to
use such techniques -- if you're a poet or a novelist! But I definitely have
strong reservations about a computer specialist using these "literary
devices" to fill in the Categories line in a *.desktop file.

So users and ground-level developers such as myself have to go back to
common-sense and provide the actual specifics.

Also doesn't help the fact that the freedesktop.org categories are
suggestions, not a mandatory standard.
Ref.:
https://specifications.freedesktop.org/ ... c-1.0.html
Sometimes the definition given on the Categories line in the desktop files
feels like a carnival.

Next time this happens in the pekwm menu or elsewhere, though, you'll
now know where to look to correct the problem: in the application's
*.desktop file, using good old common sense.

IHTH.

Hello.

If using frugal install and save-folder, everything should stay in there, or not?
Like having around ten different folders for example.. with different wm's, setups etc.

Some doupts about "forced" settings:
-rox, filer window layout should accept new setting from "Options" window
-gtkrc, rox bg may be more of a theme thing ... :?

Hi torm.

Yes everything should stay where you originally put it. I myself prefer
using savefiles rather than save-folders. I find savefiles less confusing to
manage.

Not sure what you mean by "forced settings", but yes ROX should accept
your personal / customized options in the Options window. Just remember
to click ok or validate when finished. (It's the button at bottom right of
that panel.)

Puppy has entries in the menu -- in the "Desktop" sub-menu -- for
selecting:
-- gtk themes : look for "GTK/Qt chtheme" in the menu;
-- backgrounds : look for an entry with the word "wallpaper" in it.

Backgrounds can also be changed by
-- right-clicking on any ROX desktop icon (NOT the icons in a ROX panel), then

-- in the scroll-down menu that shows up, click on the 2nd entry from the
bottom (called "change backdrop"). A "big rectangular box" will be
displayed.

Then open your /usr/share/backgrounds directory, highlight the entry in
the list for the picture you want as wallpaper and drag it in the big
"rectangle box".

At the top of that box you also have a choice of center, resize, stretch
and tile for your picture. If unsure try them all? (You tick the effect that
you want.)

When satisfied with the result, close this "rectangle" by clicking the "close"
button, and it's done.

IHTH. (Abbr. for "I hope this helps.") :)
