TV/PVR Xenial Pup V4 (32bit) - Released 5th July 2017

#1 Post by ETP »

VERSION 1 - Released 27th October (See Pages 2&3 for later versions V2 & V3 & V4 )

Record anything playing in YouTube, Kodi and CBSN.(720p or better)
(Plus in the UK or outside it with a suitable UK VPN - live BBC 720p TV streams)

This is a 32-bit Pup based on 666philb's beta Xenialpup CE 7.0.4 - k4.1.31 that was issued on 27th August 2016.

Initial install of the image is to an 8GB USB2/3 stick if the true capacity of the stick is sufficient. If it is not, a larger stick must be used.

An 8GB stick/card may be used if and only if its true capacity is not a single byte less than 8002732032 bytes.
To test the true capacity of any 8GB stick that you possess use the following command substituting the drive letter for x

Code: Select all

fdisk -l /dev/sdx
If it does not meet this requirement you must use a larger stick.

Subsequent transfer from a working stick to a HDD or SSD is possible if required.
If that is done you may then boot from the original stick or by means of a new entry in any existing boot loader configuration file.

EDIT 1st Jan 2017: Please see the fully commented syslinux.cfg containing boot code examples in the /boot/syslinux directory on the first partition of the stick.

Once booted this frugal install runs entirely in RAM with at the end of the session, the option to save or not.
The desktop "save" icon may also be used anytime during a session if desired.

Notes on Kodi:

A UK VPN with a stable minimum download speed of 10 Mbps will be needed to access BBC HD TV streams from outside the U.K.
Within the UK that speed is also needed for the BBC channels on the TV Panel.

The following add-ons are included:- Apple iTunes Trailers,iPlayer WWW, Nasa and TED Talks.

N/B, In Kodi the backslash key is used to toggle between full screen & windowed mode.

A single press of the "Pause" key will invoke a simple macro to launch Kodi and then whatever item has been placed at the top of the Kodi favourites menu.
O.O.T.B. the streamed BBC News TV channel - 720p is at the top.

A single press of the "Scroll" key will invoke another macro to launch Kodi and then whatever item has been placed at the bottom of the Kodi favourites menu.
O.O.T.B. the NASA HD Public TV channel - 720p is at the bottom. If you save a new favourite it will be placed at the bottom of the menu.

What items are placed on that menu and their order within it are selectable in Kodi via its right click menus.

TIPS.

1. Once you have pressed the "Pause" or "Scroll" key avoid moving the mouse until the channel displays.

2. If you are watching something in Kodi then suddenly decide you want to record it, press the letter "y" on the keyboard.
That will bring up the contextual menu. That lists a lot of options but for full manual control click on vlc.
Kodi will then totally disappear into the background as vlc takes over and you can then click the vlc record button to start & stop recording.

3. For smooth reception of 720p streamed TV in the UK a minimum stable bandwidth of 10Mbps is also needed. Check here:

http://www.speedtest.net

The recording abilities that have been included in Kodi are described starting here:- http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 104#915104

Notes on VLC & MPV:

Please avoid use of the "Pause" key and use instead the player's individual GUI controls for pausing playback.
(The space bar will pause/resume in vlc. The mouse scroll wheel will adjust audio volume)

The 2 "News" icons on Wbar at the top of the screen call vlc directly. Once clicked just wait and vlc will go full-screen. (Windowed in later versions)

To toggle something playing in vlc or mpv between full-screen and windowed mode use the "f" key. (F11 with some keyboards)

When in vlc windowed mode press "Ctrl + h" to toggle the player controls on and off. Those controls include the record button.
A single click of that button will start recording. A further click will stop recording.

Notes on Pale Moon:

The "Complete YouTube Saver" 5.7.23 add-on is included. Any audio or video up to 1080p playing may be downloaded using that.
When playing a YouTube video click on the down arrow next to the "Complete YouTube Saver" icon to view the scrollable list of possibilities.

Notes on PVR:

It is not a good idea to fill up your RAM or save folder with recordings. Ideally an external USB2 drive such as a Western Digital
Passport should be used. Standard fat32 format can be used unless any recordings are likely to exceed the fat32 4GB file size limit
in which case I would recommend changing it to exfat format.

Automatic mounting of that drive at boot time should be engaged via the drop down arrow next to the drive in Pmount.

Once that has been done the "record to/Downloads" options in vlc & "Complete YouTube Saver" add-on should be pointed at the external drive.

In vlc tools/preferences/inputcodecs

change from /root/vlc_recordings to /mnt/sdX1 (Substitute the USB drive letter for X e.g. /mnt/sdc1)

In "Complete YouTube Saver" options/Downloads tab

change from /root/Complete YouTube Saver to /mnt/sdX1/complete_YT_saver

Where to obtain the image:
tvpvrpup.img.xz 514MB & md5sums & screenshots & list of included pets

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Installation:

1. Commence by returning the stick to its "as new" state before targeting it with the image.

In Linux use GParted to do that:

A. Click on “device

So I installed it onto a 32gb USB but had some rendering issues that I couldn't overcome. I had that with some of Barry's Quirky April offerings, as well. I could barely make out the screen and basically had to guess at the words but I was able to launch at least one of the desktop icons. Though not working well on my system, I think this still is a great concept!! My hardware is far from new and my screens are really dated, so it's not you... it's me so to speak.

Going in, I expected my system wouldn't be able to handle it so I'm not really disappointed. Quick specs snapshot below:

TV/PVR Xenial Pup (32bit) - Released 27th October 2016

#4 Post by ETP »

Hi slavvo67,

Thanks for taking the time to test this Pup. As you found the 720p/1080p does really need an i3 or above.
I did try it with my 10 year old Pentium D945 3.4GHz but it could not handle the sound or video.

If you still have the stick, you may possibly benefit from the layout to test other Pups.
Delete the contents of the third f2fs partition together with the vmlinuz and initrd.gz on the first fat32 partition.

You can then use it to do a 30 second frugal install from any mounted Pup ISO.
A fully commented syslinux.cfg together with boot code examples can be found in the /boot/syslinux directory on the first partition.

i do still have the stick so I may very well experiment. BTW, I've always liked how you broke up the USB sticks to 3 partitions.

TV/PVR Xenial Pup (32bit) - Released 27th October 2016

#8 Post by ETP »

Hi Billtoo,

Your screenshot from the Acer seems to show a mix of the original JWM pinboard with FbBox-4.0 task bar
and side panel. Some of the original JWM icons at the top are covered by the wbar window which has false transparency.

I am not sure how it reached that state & have been unable to reproduce it so need to ask some questions.

1. Was the stick used on the Acer a fresh install or was it simply the same stick that was used in the HP?

2. Did that screen layout display on first boot or subsequently?

3. Were you forced by anything to do a hard power off before it appeared?

4. Did you launch from the prompt at any point using something other than "xwin openbox-session"?

Nice laptop BTW: :)
Acer Aspire V5-571P Touch: Specs

Processor: 1.7GHz Intel Core i5-3317U (dual-core, 2.6GHz Turbo)
Graphics: Intel HD 4000.
Display: 15.6in, touch-sensitive, glossy (1366x768) LCD.
Operating system: Windows 8 (64-bit)
Storage: 500GB HD, 5400rpm.
Memory: 6GB DDR3, 1600MHz.
Optical drive: 8X DVD±RW.
Video out: HDMI, VGA.

I. It's a fresh install, I'm posting from my original hp desktop install now.
2.First boot showed the squirrel wallpaper, I changed it to the solid blue and all the icons stayed.
3.I don't think so but can't swear to it.

One other thing on the laptop install is that the cpu frequency scaling won't work, I need to add "intel_pstate=disable" somewhere that's read during bootup.

Thanks.

Hi Billtoo,

On the first boot you should have seen the xenialsave-etp loading from the 3rd partitition on the stick.

The screenshot in the original post should then appear with the TV Panel visible, a plain blue background and
only 4 icons on the RHS of the screen. Wbar and the launcher on the LHS of the screen should then retract and
the first run/Quick Setup window should then appear. No squirrel (with nut) should be visible.

Unless you have another xenialsave file or folder on the hard drive of your Acer which could confuse matters,
if the squirrel was holding a nut, I would suspect a faulty install to the stick. As long as you do not have another
xenialsave file or folder on the hard drive I would suggest either a fresh install or that you try the Acer
with the stick from the HP.

Please also check that "start_cpu_freq" is enabled in System/Boot Manager/Services/Run at startup.

I did another install and on first bootup it showed the proper desktop,
after changing the first run settings to english canada, the timezone
and keyboard it asks if you want to restart x, after doing that you get
the squirrel + icons.
I don't know how I got the proper desktop on the hp.

Have to wait and see if the next user has problems I guess.

I'll stick with the hp install for now :)

I did another install to a 16gb SDHC card, computer is a Gateway

Hi Billtoo,

Thanks for your feedback. I have now been able to reproduce the intermittent problem that you
reported. It can sometimes be triggered by a language change. I will attempt to address the
problem then upload another build.

I will edit this post once it is available.
Thanks once again for your help.

EDIT:
A fresh build (514MB) has now been uploaded.

Optional pet to display VPN status:

This pet provides an on-screen display of your normal I/P address but when using a VPN, the display
changes to show both the new VPN address together with your previous normal I/P address.
It is a convenient reminder of your current status without having to keep hovering over the network icon.
When you disconnect from the VPN it will revert to just displaying your normal I/P address.

Setup:

1. Use PPM to install Conky basic plus its dependency.

liblua5.1-0_5.1.5|Shared library for the Lua interpreter version 5.1
conky-std_1.10.1-3|highly configurable system monitor default version

2. Install the attached pet.

Conky_ppp0_show-V1|Simple desktop display of IP address ppp0/eth0/wlan0

3. Restart X.

There is no swap partition on sda (windows 10 ) and I have formatted the last partition on sdb ext4 for storage.
The new build is working great on this older Acer laptop.

Thanks.

Optional pet plus OB setting:

If using the alternate black leather effect wallpaper mentioned in the
previous post you may also wish to run vlc without windows decorations or borders.
In retrospect when running in a window as opposed to full-screen, it is pretty ugly
having the stream name accross the top of the window.

To get that effect:

1. Access the "Desktop Appearance" menu from the launcher on
the left hand side of the screen and then select Openbox theme followed by "Appearance".
Untick the first item - "Windows retain a border when undecorated".

2. Install the attached pet which contains a revised OB rc.xml file.

3. Reboot ensuring that you save the session.

Full sized example screen-shot here: (Press F11 to toggle into full screen then click on link)

https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view ... 2hVOW5XMFE

Alt+F4 / Ctrl+q / right click menu/ - Can all still be used to close an undecorated vlc window.

TV/PVR Xenial Pup V2 (32bit) - Released 20th November 2016

#18 Post by ETP »

Version 2 of TV/PVR Xenial Pup (32-bit) tvpvrpupv2.img.xz (439MB) & md5sum can be found here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Main changes:

1. The two TV news icons on wbar now launch the channel in non-decorated windowed mode as opposed to full-screen.
The icons on the TV panel continue to launch in full-screen mode.
In both cases the keyboard letter "F" can be used to toggle between the two states.

2. All previously optional pets have now been incorporated.

3. Thunderbird updated to version 45.4.0

4. Minor tweaks to scripts plus various cosmetic improvements including changes to file type colours in Rox.

5. To permanently engage the on-screen display of IP address(s) move the conkyipstart script from the /root/ex_startup folder to the /root/Startup folder then restart X.
If you only require a temporary display leave the script in ex_startup and just left click it to execute. The IP display should appear after 12 seconds.

6. Additional programs utility in Kodi to perform housekeeping on cache, thumbnails & old packages.

Installation:
Remains as detailed in the original post. STEP 3 is revised as follows:-

3. Then use the following command in a terminal to place the extracted image on the unmounted stick:
(This may take up to 40 minutes with just a flashing cursor as feedback until it finishes)

Code:

Code: Select all

dd bs=4M if=/root/Downloads/tvpvrpupv2.img of=/dev/sdx && sync
If the stick is seen as sdb1 you would target the device /dev/sdb NOT the partition number sdb1.
Anything on it will be wiped.
