PostPosted: Fri 18 Nov 2016, 14:22    Post subject:  Crossover Linux installed, but where?

Hi. Using Tahr 6.0.5, fully updated.

Using gdebi, I successfully installed Crossover Linux. The installer, however, tells me there is no menu entry for Crossover. Curious.

Using findnrun, Crossover is nowhere to be found. And using the menu editor likewise fails to find Crossover anywhere on the system.

I really need to get to some apps that run with Crossover but not with Wine. What can I do to correct this situation? Where did Crossover install?

Thanks.

Jeff, whaddaya do'in with GDebi? I run the bin file direct from CodeWeavers.

My guess is it's either in /opt or wasn't installed correctly.

Oh, and, Wine is an included pkg with XOver.

I use gdebi because it's what I always have used...<grin>

The link to the Codeweavers page doesn't seem to do anything except display a snapshot of the Crossover install screen. Is there some other place I should be looking? I've searched the support forum on Codeweavers and there's no help there.

Thanks.

You're kidding me, right? Where'd you get your package from?

From the Crossover website. It's their .deb package. https://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover-linux/download

Confused Really? Slooow down, don't be a skimmer.

First off, Pup is NOT Ubuntu. There's absolutely NO NEED to *ever* use GDebi.

Deb's are simply clicked on with Tahr Pup, nothing complicated.

See here to understand your copy was installed to /opt.

Docs, or "help," are in /usr/share/doc/crossover.

All you need to do aboard Pup is symlink the binary to a location on your path and create a desktop file.

Done!

PS -- Don't forget, XOver's a *Python* application, NOT a bin file.

Before addressing your "bin installer" question, what happened with your GDebi install?

Were you able to find the things you were looking for and implement my suggestions?

I did follow your suggestions, but nothing worked. Very frustrating. I found the .cxoffice install, but nothing there would do anything.

You do have the devx loaded, correct?

When someone says something doesn't work, running the program from a terminal will usually tell you what's wrong.

If you went into the cxoffice folder, you would know how to run "crossover" in a terminal, correct?

Hi. Since I have got the same problem as jeffneedle the initiator of this thread I would like to pick up where he left off.
I also run a Tahrpup 6.0.5 version of puppy and would like to install a fully functional crossover.

Thank you for your help.

PostPosted: Wed 18 Oct 2017, 22:08    Post subject: Suggestions, but may be way off base

Hi TIW

I've never run nor experimented with crossoffer. So the following is based on logic. As you're undoubtedly aware, logic and reality sometimes have little to do with each other. But you've asked for suggestions, so this may be worth exploring.

Shocked I've looked for manuals/tutorials about setting it up, But only found them on codeweaver's webpages which advised me on both Palemoon and Iron that I don't have permission to read them. Other than those, all I found were youtube videos on how to install crossover on Ubuntu. Seems an install on Ubuntu does all the setup work.

As far as I know, Puppy Linux --every Linux of which I'm aware-- looks for executable files in a bin or sbin folder "on the path". These include bin, /usr/bin, usr/local/bin, sbin, usr/sbin, usr/local/sbin and --only in Puppies-- /root/my-applications/bin. Your pfind output reveal only one "bin" file being used-- /opt/cxoffice/bin/crossover-- and /opt is not "on the path".

So, the first thing you might have to do is create a file "on the path" which calls that executable. While /root/my-applications/bin could be used, I'd sugget using the /usr/bin folder instead. Someday you may want to port your work to some other Linux.

Open a terminal at /usr/bin and enter the code:

ln -s /opt/cxoffice/bin/crossover crossover

If I'm right so far, re-starting X will re-catalog what's on your system so that Puppy will recognize crossover as part of it. But a SAVE and reboot may be required. However, even that may not have gotten you very far.

Worth a try to open a terminal, type "crossover"-- without the quotes and see what happens. Let us know and we'll see if we can guess what to do next.
