How to get SCIM to work in Puppy 6?

#1 Post by yzypup »

Hi,

my computer is an Acer Aspire One D255E with 1GB of RAM.
I re-installed the 64-bit Ubuntu compatible (English version of) ISO of TAHRPUP6.0.5 to the computer's HD and applied the following necessary fix: to prevent erratic cursor jumps, I added the line

Code: Select all

Option "TouchpadOff" "2"
at the end of

Code: Select all

Section "Input Device" > Identifier "Synaptics Mouse"
in the file "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".)

Initially, Japanese directory and file names, as well as Japanese text portions on websites, were unreadable, but after using Puppy's Package Manager to install a Japanese font, everything became readable.

Next I used the Paxkage Manager to install SCIM (the available version there is 1.4.14-6), the related Japanese table, and SCIM-anthy.

No dependencies were reported as missing.

To get SCIM to start at each re-boot, I opened

Code: Select all

Menu > Setup > Startup Control
and added the command "scim".
The SCIM icon now shows up in the taskbar (to the left of the speaker icon) after I boot the computer.

Problem(s):

The pre-installed key combination setting "ctrl-space" does not bring up the required input selection menu even when the cursor is in an input field.
Without knowing what "turn on" and "turn off" refer to in the SCIM settings, I took the precaution to add the key combination settings "ctrl-al-space" and "ctrl-shift-space", respectively, but they do not appear to have any effect either.

Related questions:

The page at http://puppylinux.org/wikka/SCIM mentions "SCIM-bridge" and SCIM-m17n".

What is the function of "SCIM-bridge"? Is it essential?
If so, why is it not in the Package Manager and automatically installed?
What command do I need to install it via the CLI?

(By the way, the download server mentioned on the page at http://puppylinux.org/wikka/SCIM does not appear to exist any more.)

Thanks in advance for relevant hints!

This may help you.
This is an old post, but it does seem to talk about problems you have and how to fix them.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
