Can you recommend dvd rw version?

#1 Post by mesmd »

Hi,

I never used Linux to date. I was just looking in a pc world email and found your site.

I am so novice to Puppy, but would love to try. I use Win XP home.

My questions: Can you recommend the latest version of Puppy that I can download and burn to a cd or dvd with the following features:

1) I can boot from the cd or dvd (both rw) after burning the Iso to either.

2) Avoid any writing to my hard drives, and using the rw areas of the cd or dvd to store files, etc.

3) I use Firefox and TB on the XP, so does the latest ver. include FF and TB? Can I get them fot the boot cd or dvd?

4) I don't mind really, if Puppy needs to write to my HD, as long as it will not destroy my current system files or alter any of the normal configuration when I boot my Win XP from my HD.

5) I told you I'm very "novice"!!

6) I have a cable broadband and would I really be able to access the internet with FF on the dvd or cd that I burn the iso to and boot from?

7) This computer is part of a 4 workstation wired router home network. It has 512mb ram , a Pentium 4, 3.0 gb cpu, and 2 large Ide hds, several usb flash drives (1 gb), and an older usb2 40 gb. external HD.

8) Also CD and Dvd burners.

9) I appreciate any recommendations you may suggest, so I can finally try Puppy (Linux..finally)

Thank you very much for your help and support.

Sincerely,

Miles

Your best bet is probably 1.09CE

It is rock solid comes with Firefox and you can choose at the beginning to not save to disk but run in ram (one file is saved to disk)

Here is more info for beginners

Whichever version of Puppy you choose to try first, probably the most reliable way to make a multisession CD or (preferably) DVD is to do it in two steps: The first is to download the Puppy iso you want to use to your hard disk drive, then burn a bootable CD with it in Windows using whatever burning program you have. This gives you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with Puppy by booting the CD and playing around with it.

The second step is to boot the Puppy CD you made, and use Puppy's Menu -> Multimedia -> Burniso2cd to burn the multisession CD or DVD with the same iso from the hard disk drive. (Yes, Puppy can read the iso from a Windows hard disk drive.) If you used a CD- or DVD- RW for the first step, you should be able to simply leave it in the drive and burn the multisession onto it, but I've only done that with DVD+RW.

Either way, Puppy should not write to your hard drive without asking your permission first. So pay attention.

multisession

Please take note that in versions 1.06-1.09, multisession has a separate ISO, and in versions 2+, there is only one ISO for both standard and multisession.
