Which Puppy for a Dell xps8900 Desktop?

#1 Post by tlchost »

for several years i've been using tahr605-32 bit....just got a new Dell xps8900 and tahr(32 and 64 bit), and every puppy i've tried so far, while booting, does not recognize either the ethernet mobo chip or the wireless network mobo chip.

In frustration i tried mint 18 32 bit....and it does see those chips.

output of lspci below:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Sky Lake Host Bridge/DRAM Registers (rev 07)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Sky Lake PCIe Controller (x16) (rev 07)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H USB 3.0 xHCI Controller (rev 31)
00:14.2 Signal processing controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H Thermal subsystem (rev 31)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H CSME HECI #1 (rev 31)
00:17.0 RAID bus controller: Intel Corporation SATA Controller [RAID mode] (rev 31)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H PCI Express Root Port #1 (rev f1)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H LPC Controller (rev 31)
00:1f.2 Memory controller: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H PMC (rev 31)
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H HD Audio (rev 31)
00:1f.4 SMBus: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H SMBus (rev 31)
00:1f.6 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V (rev 31)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107 [GeForce GTX 745] (rev a2)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation Device 0fbc (rev a1)
02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8723BE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter

can anyone point me to drivers that might work in tahr 32 or 64 bit and/or a puppy that is in use on an xps8900?

thanks!

Howdy Mate, you may have to build the wireless driver..

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Realtek_RTL87 ... Card_(HMC)

The kernel you're running with your distro of choice?

Use PupScan to gather more information about your ethernet device.

Does that have the combined bluetooth and wireless chip??
I had tho get a seperate card for my Dell that has the combined one because I couldn't get the onboard one to support my 5Ghz network.
It was cheaper than spending hours fiddling with drivers.

If you noticed on the page I left, try swapping in a newer kernel.

Compared to the one you posted, look at the kernel version referenced on WikiDevi.

Whether hardware's supported or not is many times dependent upon what's supplied by the kernel.

May just need the firmware for the wireless hardware.

Tahrpup 6.0.5 32bit
Installed as frugal install or full install.

For the wireless issue.

Try this:
Download this deb package of updated firmware.
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/m ... 23_all.deb
Left click on it to install.
Reboot making sure the added firmware gets saved in Tahrpup save.

This help any?

This is the repository I used.

tried the 4.x kernel....it no longer detected the ethernet/wireless on my current desktop, so i did not test it on the new one.

Which drivers does Mint say are in use?

Are you able to connect both wired and wireless?

You may still need to update the firmware.
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/m ... .6_all.deb
tried it...first thing it tells me is that i can not use get
-libreoffice ib a usb...which is a problem that was solved years ago, Seond thing is it lags like crazy...which makes no sense when you have an i7 and 16 gigs of ram.

but thanks for the suggestion.
