Tahr+Slacko; USB mouse dies after several seconds

#1 Post by Walter Dnes »

I have an old Acer Aspire One netbook with Atom CPU and Poulsbo GMA500 video. I initially tried Lucid Puppy. It worked, including the mouse, but the 1024x768 VESA video is painfully slow+stuttering on Youtube. There is a UVESAFB option, but apparently, it's not much better.

Tahr and Slacko directly support the Poulsbo video chip at 1366x768. But they both have a problem with the USB mouse. At first the USB mouse works. But after 10 to 30 seconds it stops working. This happens both during the install from USB key and also during boot from hard drive. The Synaptics touchpad keeps working, but I do not like it. I've tried...
  • Disabling the Synaptics touchpad with <Fn><F7>. It stops, but the USB mouse is still dead.
    Switching the mouse to a different USB port.
    I tried a different mouse.
Any ideas? The mouse worked in Gentoo, and works in Lucid Puppy. Is there a way to disable the Synaptics driver altogether? I'd rather do without the touchpad than without the mouse.

What version of Tahrpup and Slacko?

Checked the setup in mouse/keyboard Wizard?

lupu-5.2.8.7-20161228.iso is the only one that works properly. Just my luck that the kernel is too old to fully support my video chip.

Versions displaying the mouse problem are...
  • * slacko-6.3.0.iso
    * lupusuper4-5.2.8.7-k3.9.9-20161228.iso
    * tahr-6.0.5_noPAE.iso
    * tahr-6.0.5_PAE.iso
lupusuper4 is an addition that I've tried since my original post. The mouse works for approximately the first 30 seconds, and then dies during the install (all except except Lucid Puppy where it works properly). I did check the mouse/keyboard wizard. Changing mouse type to PS2 doesn't help.

I'm attaching dmesg output from Slacko bootup, in case it helps.

This is weird. I moved synaptics_usb.ko to /root, but the problem remains. This is with Slacko.

mouse/keyboard Wizard->Touchpad->General

Try this:
Turn touchpad mode off.

Any change?

Is "Guest mouse off" not checked?

Bad idea. I was left with no mouse (USB or touchpad)

I discovered something on Slacko. Then I installed superlupu-4 over top of it, and saw the same thing...
  • Click on Roxterm icon right after startup, before the mouse dies.
    Execute "dmesg"
    Wait for mouse to die
    Execute "dmesg" again
    There are 4 additional lines in the second output (i.e. after mouse dies)

Code: Select all

[ 341.786843] uhci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0: host controller process error, something bad happened!
[  341.786865] uhci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0: host controller halted, very bad!
[  341.786895] uhci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0: HC died; cleaning up
[  341.787019] usb 2-2: USB disconnect, device number 2
I wonder if the netbook is dying on me. But then again, why does this not happen in the regular Lucid Puppy? The mouse remains functional there.

For the Puppies that have problems.
Make sure they are good downloads.
Make sure install location is clean fresh format.

If anything is being placed on a location formatted with a Windows format (Fat32 or ntfs) run chkdisk and defrag (Windows programs) to make sure the file system is error free and not fragmented.
A fresh clean format will also do this.

That dmesg code output helps.

A search for those errors brings up a lot of ideas, but I am not sure what is really causing your problem.

Some ideas. :idea:
Newer Linux kernel support for uhci has changed.
More than one USB device, hooked to USB controller, causing voltage flux, that the uhci software is not handling very well.

Tried just having the USB mouse only thing hooked to a USB port?

You can Google search for: uhci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0: host controller halted, very bad!
Maybe you will see something I did not.

This is not something I know much about and after the Google search, I have even less understanding. :shock: :lol:

Well , I am trying to help you. :lol:

I went even further and booted with no mouse, except the touchpad. The uchci_hcd message came up anyways, after 30 seconds or so.

Here's a bit of a giggle. I suggest not going to the following URL with a Windows machine. Given their dodgy page, I wouldn't put it past them to engage in drive-by-downloads
