Grub for DOS works in XP, but you have to add a line in boot.ini of XP. (Lots of discussion here about frugal install in NTFS - same setup holds even if XP has FAT system.)
If you have done this already, run in XP the grub.exe so that the boot system will be setup properly. Then reboot.
