Hello all.

The "good and rather complete converter" by don 570 that I was telling
you about on page 8 of this thread is here.

I've attached a screen shot.

i believe it is worth including in this Dpup Stretch-7, replacing gmeasures.

I edited my previous message accordingly.

Hi all,

Lastly, at you all, I've got this weird 'freemapapplet' behavior that whenever I want to 'restart' jwm window manager or JWMDesk Manager or even restarting the graphical server (via the Exit button), freemapapplet duplicates itself in the jwm-tray and keeps replicating itself endlessly matching each time I do jwm/X restarts. I have to manually cancel each tray icon replication. None of the other tray icons (retrovol, firewall, netmon, etc) do this. (I'll post a pic in a few minutes, after I restart jwm 4or 5 times, there will be 4 or 5 freemappapplet icons)

What could be causing this?? (picture below is of 4 jwm-restarts after original bootup---so the total is 5 freemapapplet icons)

You have a freemapplet in Usr/bin so in startup remove the one you have there and make a script called freememapplet_tray and something simple that works like
Code:
#!/bin/sh
killall freememapplet_tray &&
exec freememapplet_tray

I tried it and it works for me Smile
ttuuxxx

Watch it! You DON'T have a freememapplet_tray in /usr/bin!

The one in ~/Startup is the only copy!

Please do
Code:
mv /root/Startup/freememapplet_tray /usr/bin
beforehand.

Otherwise you'll have to recopy it from /initrd/pup_ro2:
Code:
cp -i /initrd/pup_ro2/root/Startup/freememapplet_tray /usr/bin

As to the script itself, this is what I would suggest:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
# Idée de ttuuxxx, modifiée par moi.
####
if [ "`ps | awk '$4 ~ /freememapplet_tray/'`" ];then
        killall -q freememapplet_tray
        sleep 0.5s
fi
        exec freememapplet_tray

This way we do the killall operation only if the utility is running.

(Splitting hairs, I know!) Wink

umm yes he does have one usr/bin I'm running his version right now Smile and he has one in startup, its a bit smaller also. LoL I knew someone would expand on it, Yes the sleep timer is sometimes used, but not all apps need it unless reported. But hey both work for me and your version is more precise and modern, my version is more retro and yesteryear puppy Smile. Splitting hairs indeed, lol

Don't worry, ttuuxxx, it has all been a test and musher has failed. He said he would download and try my very first, virgin build, and, sadly, he did not keep his word. The lack of him posting (even though he said he was "downloading") and now this freememapplet mistake, tells me he never tried it. And this is true despite my being one of the first to download his puduan 6.0 and give him feedback on it, praising him and such. I guess what comes around does not go around for us lowly people who try our first build.

Oh well. My heartfelt thanks are to you, Billtoo and SailorE who all downloaded it + "actuially" tried it. It makes me feel good at least 3 people, lol, tried it. Good news is this thing now keeps getting better all the time....from all your guys' fixes & suggestions, and me still bungling along installing stuff (even if I have to rob other distros because I keep flunking at compiling). So it is starting to look and have the feel of a bona-fide good pup distro.

You broke my heart, musher. Our bromance can never be the same again Twisted Evil And here I thought you were one of the good guys Sad

Hi all,

Good to see development on Dpup Stretch, I remember I liked what Pemasu did earlier, great work on Debian based Puppy.

Please ??? don't fight, work together !!! (that could mean sometimes to put your ego behind bars Smile )

I did a new manual frugal install to the hard drive of my Compaq pc.
Radky (I'm testing FbBox-4.1) pm'd me with a fix for the network tray
and all the proper icons appear now.

I have to turn the filewall off or I can't connect to the internet,
Shields UP at grc.com says I'm good so the firewall in my modem is all
that's needed here.

This is the original iso that I uploaded to the Smokey01 server.
I can't upload radky's fix until he okays it but will if he does.

Hi Fred,

good to see you around!

Regarding your comment:
I do hope that at some point we'll come together with a co-operative
plan about this Dpup Stretch-7
-- with each our role and tasks towards the goal of making this Puppy
available to the public
-- with a proper list of problem areas to solve

instead of each of us pulling in separate directions and having to apply
individually on our copy the improvements the other guys have provided.

BFN.

Well like I mentioned earlier soon I'll have something, lol So will most, I think we'll have a few versions at once, sometimes diversity isn't all that bad Smile
What do you use to make the iso image, The scripts I managed in 2.14X doesn't work on new puppies, I don't want to waste a lot of time on it, Just something simple where I can take the edited SFS's etc toss them in a folder and make a bootable iso image.

Hi, ttuuxxx.

In other words, you are saying no to any structured co-operation and
want / force us to go solo with each our own take on the project.

I disagree with your approach. I think we can only run in circles without
some form of organized co-operation on this project. I also think that a lot
of time will be lost redoing and incorporating each other's experiments.
We could cover more ground and offer a product of higer quality if we
were in sync rather than in parallel.

The logical result of this, to me anyway, is of course that this Dpup
Stretch-7 will be representative of one dev only -- with all the glory, if
there is any -- !but it won't represent Puppy Linux as a brand.

But thank you for your honesty.

BFN.

@belham2

As promised, even if late, please find attached scrots of your build.

As you can see, jwm has a problem with my large screen. Not your fault,
the default template had the same problem with jwm.

Compare these scrots with the ones I provided with wmx as a WM:
wmx doesn't have this problem.

Best regards.

@all:

Given ttuuxxx's refusal above, who's with me to achieve the goal of
developing this Dpup Stretch-7 co-operatively?

Even a tandem will be ok, but given the expected scope of the task it
would be better if there were 3 or 4 of us.

One of these people should be the project leader (coordinator). A good
communicator with organization skills, not necessarily a "dev" per se. If
such a person comes by, I'll pass the hand, I'm not in it for the glory.
And to be frank, I prefer being a "field man" ("homme de terrain").

Let's remember Puppy has popularity positions to regain at DW and in the
Linux world generally. One way to get there is of course the search for
the highest quality.

A reply by PM would be appreciated -- for the time being, for privacy and
confidentiality. If and when we have a team, the project should have its
own thread.

If you have no interest in or no skills for this project, do you think you
could nevertheless spread the word?

Thanks in advance.

In co-operation,
